Video: Heart & Soul of New York City

A tribute to NY basketball.

Thanks to our friends at K1X, a visual love letter to NY basketball is here for the sharing. Streetball documentarist Kevin Couliau spent most of last summer capturing stunning backtop visuals from all five boroughs. Que Red Cafe’s ode, and it’s pure magic:

The video, in K1X’s words: “Yes, it’s about that time. Rain, sleet and snow have made way for the sun, long evenings and fresh sneakers. Early may, when Europe’s hardwood champions have been crowned and the NBA Playoffs shift into full gear, marks the unofficial start of the real basketball season: the streetball season! That’s when reputations are made, nicknames are born and every ballplayer naturally gravitates towards that “thump”, “thump” sound of his or her home court. Playground basketball is where it all started. Playground basketball is where talent is honed and friendships are made. It’s where neighborhoods gather and where skills and sweat are a currency. That’s especially true for the mecca of basketball, New York City. Nowhere else do streetball tournaments, players and games attract a quasi-religious following. Dollars, pride and bragging rights are on the line. Believe the hype!”

That’s excellent. Really well done. I just wish the women could get a little love. How about the West 4th St. League that plays all summer, for instance? Did I miss it? Were they in there for a nano-second? LOL I mean, aren’t they NY Basketball too?

Natalie, I would have loved to add women’s streetball footages, unfortunately k1x wasn’t doing any partnerships with women tournaments. Anyway, I agree with you, so next time I’ll put some bball ladies in it !

  • Natalie

Cool, Kevin. Thanks for the response — and on behalf of the ladies, if I may, the respect. Will look forward to it. See ya at the Cage :)

  • the_baller20
