For Old Time’s Sake: Magic to Worthy

Magic Johnson is one of the best passers and greatest overall players in the history of the game. He was savvy, had incredibly court vision, and an affinity for the flashy. Flashy is okay though if you’re Magic, because it was either the only play or the better play. We hear LeBron comparisons all of the time and I gotta say, if you are comparing strictly skill sets… he and Magic are a near perfect comparison. Yeah, Lebron would whoop his ass in a street fight but I’m talking skill set here. From running the point to taking on centers and forwards on both ends, they could/can handle it all.

I have been staying pretty low key on here. Just reading and leaving lol. But I wouldn’t have clicked on this link to watch the video if I knew it was to promote Lebron’s test1cular area.

  • http://sdfjklf.com Jukai

You know, if you really break it down, it looks like Lebron is a superior player.
But Magic just… DID things better. It’s so hard to explain. He was fast but not blazing fast. Strong but not super strong. Ball handling was great but not incredible. Had a decent shot but it wasn’t legendary. What makes Magic so good?
I mean, he ALWAYS made the right decision. That’s the only explanation. Smarter basketball player in the world. Best leader next to Russell, hands down. He knew what shot to take on what defender at what time. He knew exactly how to get the ball to exactly the right guy, and exactly who to box out to get to that rebound.
    Second best player, all time.

He’s one of the few players to cement his legacy as one of the greatest of all time without having huge scoring numbers, but simply doing it when it counted. LeBron ain’t no Magic, the athleticism doesn’t make the player.

    No greater pg.

Are you comparing some role player to the great Magic Johnson?

    Get outta here.

  • Martey

Naming Lebron three time in a paragraph about Magic is straight Overkill. Their skill set was not the same at all. Anyways Magic is my favorite player ever, followed by Isiah. He is the greatest passer in history. His court vision was unsurpassed. People talk Stockton, but take the pick and roll to Malone out of it and half his assists are gone. The Lake Show running the fast break was bball at its most exciting. He also made everyone around him better. He could also score, although his game always seemed awkward to me. Awkward the way a juggler would be.Struggling to maintain control of all the balls in the air but nothing ever falls. I think Jukai put it best.

Magic’s passes are as exciting as a Shawm Kemp jam to me. Those passes are a thing of beauty, the flair, the precision, not many can make ‘em like that. Guys like Worthy, James and Cooper probably had the time of their lives running on the break with no. 32.

Damn…I was not even one years old yet.

Magic will always be my favorite NBA player.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Eboy

My favorite Magic pass of all time (I wish I had a link for it)is him coming the middle of the floor, two cats running on either side, and Earvin looks right, starts talking to that dude and then dishes it left, perfectly in stride, to the other dude for the layup!

    The G.O.A.T..

The bounce pass to Rambis, while he was laying on the floor, is almost certainly the coolest assist in NBA history.

The bounce pass to Rambis, while Magic is lying on the floor, is almost certainly the coolest assist in NBA history.

Nice proofreading before publishing there Sparky…

I’ve said all along Magic was/is the greatest Player that ever LIVED

    Point , Big Guard , Forward SM/Power , Center

    How can someone argue

  • NAS

Sorry but you guys picked a really bad highlight of magic – so many better plays, so so many

  • Jack

Magic is superior in every way to Bron-Bron. He could dominate (and showed this) from any position.

And I agree, You Tube has Magic reels that make your head spin. This was rather mundane by his standards.

  • http://yahoo tom blank

Lebron is a superior athlete, not nearly as smart a player and Lebron turns the ball over ALOT more than Magic. Magic understood that full speed is not the way to go all the time, sometimes the “quarterback” has to let the play develop, Lebron forces the issue all the time, is much more predictable, easier to defend with help.

    GOAT–In descending order!

Put these guys around Kareem in any position and you can’t lose!

    SF–Dr. J
    PF–Magic J

How could you possibly guard this line-up or out-rebound these guys? When Dr. J is the weakest link on your team, the opponents have problems!!!

  • Twizz

Lebron lost all respect in the way he handled himself this summer. His legacy destroyed by his own stupidity. Magic is a man of class. He never held a city hostage for his own agenda. Magic has respect for the game in ways most players today, including the former King James, could never imagine. Lebron will never be worthy of being compared to any of the greats no matter what he does now because of how he handled his situation and because he gave up and had to join forces with a star studded cast to achieve something he could have achieved without them. I wish him well in Miami, but, as always, I am sitting on the Lakers side to watch Miamis big deal become a big flop. Much peace and love to all. GO LAKERS 2010-2011!!!

  • bgbolton

Da boy(Lebron) doesn’t even have a ring and you have the audacity to mention him in the same braath as Magic, are you serious. We are talking skill sets on a team sport. The skill set of a champion enables those around you to play a championship caliber. It is not only physical ability but mental ability as well which Lebron is truly lacking. Magic had it, Michael had it, Bill had it, KOBE HAS IT!!!, Its the skillset of a champion. What it looks like to me or what you should have said is that Magic is to Worthy as D Wade is to Lebron after all D. Wade is already a champion. I think Lebron can make a good reincarnated James Worthy but he will never compare to Magic!!!!!

That should have read “can all these guys be banned for life”. Seriously, the stupidity levels just continue to rise and rise each day.

  • Cool Dude

Man how long are people gonna say Lebron is guaranteed a ring? Heard LBJ slurpers say that when he was on the Cavs with 2 60 win season, and now I hear that for him on the heat. Nobody in the NBA is guaranteed squat except for getting old.

  • http://slamonline.com Spaceship Jay

    LOL! Danny is right.

  • http://www.slamonline.com James the Balla

Schneezy … have fun having no job in a couple of months!!

  • truthteller

@Eboy: What’s wrong? Is everyone stupid because they’re critising LeBron?

  • anti-crust

There was a similar one to this where he used a bounce pass thru a tighter opening, I think it was to Worthy or Green….can’t remember, he didn’t look away, the pass was awesome enough without it……

  • bgbolton

What’s James gonna do when the Laker’s three-peat. I hear “Survivor” is looking for cast members, maybe he can join the cast in the off-season. That will keep him in the lime light for sure!!!!

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

    Two things.
    1. Magic was a beast with the one-handed bounce pass off the dribble.
    2. When he passed to Rambis, he actually took the ball back from a Rockets player with one hand, while the Rockets player had two hands on the rock. That’s wanting it right there.

  • JTaylor21

You clowns talking bout bron is a reincarnated James Worthy are nothing but laker’s town who*res. Bron is the best passer I’ve ever seen next to magic, that one pass he had against the wizards where he zipped it right past haywood’s ears to a waiting Z was the greatest pass of all time. The precision and timing was nothing short of unbelievable. If the heat use bron the same way riley used Magic,I envision 23/11/8 for him, the heat threatening the bulls 72 wins and the heat a** fuc*ing LA with no Vaseline.

  • http://bleachreport.com Keith

LBJ is a Magic wannabe. He abandoned ship so he could achieve Magic status. There is only one Magic, 6’9″, 245 lbs of pure overall basketball talent. There will be no other. btw, the only thing the Heat will be a**fuc*ing is the Miami BB fans as they overypay to see that 3 ring circus, no rings.

  • http://www.slamonline.com/ The Promise

Bron and Magic are 2 different players. Don’t compare them just because Lebron plays the point sometimes. They call him Magic because his passes looked like magic. They call LeBron The King, who has won no titles and the only thing he does on the court thats halfway cool to me is his dunks. I have watched him play as much as anybody, and his passes have got me out of my seat, though some of them have been impressive. Just stupid to compare these guys. Magic pi*ses excellence man. Bron ain’t winning 5 chips in Miami.

  • http://www.slamonline.com/ The Promise

**Have not got me out of my seat** excuse the typo.

  • truthteller

Jtaylor: I think you’re the who$%re. get off Lebron’s sack! he already has way too many cheerleaders on it! lebron, the best passer you seen next to magic? how old are you ? and are you sure you watch basketball? the nerver to call people laker whoT$ and then he pulls this crap outta his butt!

  • http://slamonline.com GotHandles?

Lebron = Magic on Roids. @James the Balla… quit complaining

  • http://www.winstonandthetelescreen.com winstonandthetelescreen

Anybody trying to compare the Prince to Magic is really just showing their age, you have to be 25 or under to even think about uttering both their names in the same breath. Straight up ignorance and nothing else. NO ONE who saw Magic play would compare that second banana to him!

  • Cool Dude

@Twizz No offense bro. I think LBJ is a massive doutche as much as anybody, but you cannot say Magic was exactly the greatest role model. People in the 80′s boo’ed him publicly for getting his first coach fired. He was called Tragic Johnson for a while. Real talk.

  • blk_majic

  • Ali

My main man my MAGIC, THE best at making a NBA game entertaining! Hands down! No one better! Had hella fun every game, THE ultimate teammate. And a serious winner! We all got our opinions about the GOAT. He’s mine! I remember riding around The Forum parking on my beach cruiser praying someone could me a ticket to a game when I was a teen.
“Big Game James” was the shi* too…WUUUUWEEEE, Statue of Liberty dunk on ya a**! Hahaha….

  • Twizz

Nobody really knows how Magics first coach got fired as not one of us was there. Magic could have just as easily been the scapegoat in that situation. I remember those times very well as a season ticket holder until they moved to Staples and I moved out of state. I will gladly acknowledge the Magic made mistakes, dont we all? but, Magic was and is a better role model than LBJ ever will be. More so than any recent or current play ever will be. Just an opinion. I hope LBJ finds his way out of Stupidland without losing the capacity to not drool on himself, but thats about as nice as I can be for him.
