For Old Time’s Sake: Spud Webb

Dude was 5’7″, 130lbs, beat Nique in a dunk contest, and dunked on Manute Bol. I think that pretty much sums it up. Spud, your name is dope and your hops fantastic. Way to rep for the lil guys.

    dude’s hops were unreal man…unreal

  • peter

why does he look so much smaller than nate?

  • http://www.slamonline.com/ niQ

    ^cause he is?

  • http://itsahardwoodlife.blogspot.com omphalos

I still can’t believe it when I see it… he just skyrockets off the ground. Serves Wilkins right for underestimating the little guy.

  • Celtics fan

how high was his verticle? I’m sure I could look it up myself, but I’m bein lazy.

  • Overtime

The double clutch was the best. The reverse wasnt far behind though

  • hammer

4 the yung ‘uns out there who think nate is the s**t,think twice, recognize and give props 2 the ol skool! It didn’t take spudd 14 tries 2 convert 1 dunk!

  • http://slamonline.com/ Ryne Nelson

Not sure he was better than ‘Nique in that dunk contest, but anyone who can do that at 5-7 gets mad respect in my book.

  • Joe A

Can I make a request for a Bernard King edition of For Old Time’s Sake? I know it will be mostly 19 foot jumpers but dude was ill. On topic though, Not only did Spud have insane hops, he was also a pretty good point guard. He wasn’t an all-star caliber player but he always held his own even though he was 4-5 inches shorter than his opponents.

  • The Philosopher

    42 inches.

  • Martey

What was up the haircut on Spud. He always had a weird fade on the side back in the day. Like he couldn’t grow hair there. I saw him recently and he worked that out. Good for him. Great player. That Hawks team was stacked.

  • erich

    Co sign hammer.

  • nastierthanu

@omphalos. Nique encouraged him to get in the contest

    The short guys Hero!!

damn. dominique crams his dunks with crazy ferocity. back when dunk contests were good. spudd is only 130 pounds though? how the hell?

  • http://www.slamonline.com JL

he was flying. you guys don’t give nate enough credit. he’s pretty similar to spud in terms of talent and hops. although i do think spud has way better skills. and he probably practiced the dunks BEFORE the contest.

  • http://thacorner.net/fourms Kevin

For some reason I always laugh at MJ’s reaction to Spud’s last dunk lol

  • Jonathan Faulkner

Anthony “Spud” Webb was a great point guard back in the day, he really gave great heart to a lot of little guys out there, moreso even than Mugsy Bogues. If you can find it there is an in game dunk vs the Lakers when Spud’s leading the break, it’s ridiculous. Here’s to Spud!

  • JTaylor21

^^^some people really don’t understand the meaning of great.

  • Shadojoker

Spud NEVER dunked on Manute Bol..that was Tyrone Hill…check your references!!

  • http://google c_cantrell

    ^JTaylor21..
i know rite? i think most ppl just seen him in the dunk contest, or even in a couple highlights, and never seen him play in a single game but see his leaping ability and automatically assume he was ‘great’

  • Jonathan Faulkner

When Spud was 28 he averaged 20 ppt and 7.1apg, go ask any Hawk or King who played with him if he was a great point guard. Greatness can be defined in many ways, he was a consummate professional, a true point and a class act all the way. He is great because people that love the game think he is and that is, and should always be, enough.

  • http://google c_cantrell

    ^Jonathan Faulkner..
ummm…. so your saying if me and everyone else on this site that loves the game started to think that for some reason darko was just amazing and great then that would be enough to consider him great? no.. sorry that is not enough bud

  • hammer

A good solid pg. Wouldn’t go as far as 2 say spudd was frosted flakes. Grrrrrrrreat! More like dan patrick used 2 say on sportscenter:good!

  • hammer

A good solid pg. Wouldn’t go as far as 2 say spudd was frosted flakes. Grrrrrrrreat! More like dan patrick used 2 say on sportscenter:good! And I mean no disrespect 2 spudd whatsoever. That’s just a fact. Save the word greatness 4 those who truly were and r

  • hammer

My bad on the double post

  • http://Facebook.com/jray2009 Jray

@cantrell. You’re an idiot. He may not be “Great” but Jonathan is making good points. The Darko analogy was terrible. Spudd actually accomplished himself and Darko was a bust for 7 years and counting. In short, stfu and actually watch basketball, instead of commenting on topics you have no idea about.

  • total scrotal implosion

spud is so overrated, and not just dunking. nique got robbed in that dunk contest, just like 88.
