Russell Westbrook’s Highlight Of A Weekend

Team USA’s been putting in work so far in Istanbul, Turkey. A lot of players have helped the cause, but none have done it as loudly as Mr. Russell Westbrook. Need proof? Check the vids below:

Fun to see that the first link under this story is “Will Russell Westbrook Avoid Team USA Cut?” My hunch: Yes.
Also fun to remember that Russ and Kevin Love were teammates at UCLA in 07-08. That was a squad.

Great shot blocker for a point guard. He’s got ups.

  • http://www.twitter.com/gerardhimself Gerard Himself

    Agreed. Nice block.

so nasty. so much better in the league than he was at UCLA when he had to share with love and collison. Always skeptical when dudes are taken in the lottery who don’t run their own college teams. He was great at ucla but not this great. GOOD SCOUTING

I wonder how many slamonline referees will call travel on those two dunks.

Sucks to be a true-blue Sonics fan. Missin’ Westbrook, Jeff Green, and that guy rappin’ on that FootLocker ad representing their city.

Westbrook is a beast, better than rondo…. Chauncey and rose are very turnover prone, that might cost us a game

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

Westbrook is more turnover prone than both of them.
Rose probably takes better care of the ball than any other guard on Team USA, but all of them could stand to improve.
I think, after watching this tournament, that Rose is better than Westbrook. Before I was on the fence, now I’ve decided completely. Rose is just way more polished offensively, and while Westbrook’s defense, toughness and explosiveness are impressive, I think Rose is still ahead of him as an overall player.

Westbrook is sick. I like how he looks at the guy after he blocks his shot.

@Allenp, on offense I would rather have the ball in Rose’s hands at the end of the game instead of Westbrook’s. And on defense I would rather have Westbrook on the ball.

did anyone catch that siiiiick cross he put on dude?

  • http://onemoreandigottago.blogspot.com Zak_Knutson13

    Nope. No one saw that.

  • ab_40

please replace eric gordon with danny granger in the rotation

  • Robb

sick player. His game is kind of one dimensional but he’s definitely fun to watch. He’s nowhere near DRose though.

  • nastierthanu

Did anybody catch the dunk his missed against croatia off the spin move. Its like so international folk are insulting his mother

Why is everyone on Drose’s nuts? I agree Rose is real good and everything but Westbrook is on his level. Offensively they are the 2 most explosive players in the league with suspect outside shots/ decent midrange/ and good playmakin, passing skills/ and excellent at blowing by people and attacking the rim. While Rose is more polished offensively wit a more reliable mid range game, Westbrook makes it up with much better defense than Rose. They are pretty much a wash.. Both got swag/confidence and all the intangibles too

Jay Triano: “My God, look at these Euros! Can I draft ALL of them?!”

  • http://nicekicks.com meloman2.0

    @anton: i think u mean Bryan Colangelo

  • xplore

great to see a young man at work. i love this guy. just wish rondo was still there.

  • Mitya

You forgot the two-handed double-pump off a sick Curry dish on a fast break, it came soon after that block.
Also, @LeoneL: I don’t think Westbrook was in the league in the last Sonics season.

I disagree Allenp. I think Westbrook is a very underrated passer (who averages more assists than Rose), and though the turnovers aren’t pretty, like you said his defense and toughness push him over the top. I’m not saying he’s better than Rose but you can’t say he isn’t at his level. So yeah, I’m still on that fence. Rose is probably more polished on offense, although–like we just saw, there really isn’t stopping Westbrook when he’s fired up.

For those who believe that westbrook is on Rose’s level check out the four career games they’ve played each other. they always start westbrook out on Derrick but eventually end up putting thabo on him because he tears him up. Also westbrooks assist total should be higher because he passes to the NBA’S leading scorer every night in Durant. Kobe said it best when he said that Rose for a young player has a great understanding of when to shift gears. It seems like Westbrook plays at only one speed

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

    Good point Damien.

  • Shem

Derrick Rose is a better player then Russell Westbrook, period. Russell is a top 10 PG, Rose is a top 5 PG.

  • K.a.

Teddy, russ assist average is a bit bias since rose has nobody remotely same caliber as durant to pass to, just sayin.

  • Jak Daddy

did anyone notice that both of the dunks were travel(s)?

  • http://sfdjklf.com Jukai

Uhh, I think Rose is better than Westbrook, but that Durant point is a bit overdone. Durant scores mostly while playing with the ball, it’s not like he’s a Shawn Marion or James Worthy here.

  • Noses Malone

@total Westbrook is a better international player than Rondo, no doubt. But Rondo is a dominant NBA point guard. This guy takes over whole playoff series, almost averaging a triple double. Westbrook may be slightly more explosive getting above the rim, but Rondo is as quick as Westbrook and craftier than him.
