Shawn Marion’s Plan this Summer: Be Selfish

Well, moreso than usual: “As for returning to the Raptors next season, Marion, the free agent to be, would not commit one way or the other. Every indication he did give suggested that trip to Montreal may be his last taste of Canadiana until he returns next season as a member of a visiting team. Case in point was his reply when asked if he wanted to come back. ‘It’s definitely an option,’ Marion said, trying to sound open to the situation. ‘I’m going to keep all my doors open. I’ve got to weigh every (option) that I have. It’s a big opportunity I have this summer.’ The opportunity Marion speaks of is deciding where he wants to play. In a little over a year, he has gone from a first-place team in Phoenix to a bad Miami team and then this year left the improving Heat to join a struggling Raptors club. ‘I’ve got to worry about my future,’ Marion said when asked if the uncertainty of Chris Bosh remaining a Raptor factored into his own decision. ‘I’ve got to be selfish right now because I can’t worry about nobody, I’ve got to worry about myself.’”

    Jerkoff.

  • Cheryl Posted: Apr.17 at 9:37 am
He’s a decent player to have for the mid-level. He can’t create, but he’s a decent defender and can run and finish on the break.

  • ENDS Posted: Apr.17 at 9:48 am
Shawn ME-rion. Even Shaq said he wanted to return to Orlando before he Bolted. “it defenitly an open option of disscussion…”

  • Bryan Posted: Apr.17 at 9:56 am
When has he ever looked out for anyone but himself? He better go to a team with a fast break offense and a dynamic point guard otherwise he’s dunzo.

  • Ken Posted: Apr.17 at 9:58 am
In his defense, if any of you were in a position to make millions more dollars by “being selfish,” can you tell me with a straight face that you wouldn’t?

  • Bryan Posted: Apr.17 at 10:04 am
Its not that ken, its that he’s saying it like its a new development the guy has been selfish for at least the last 6 seasons if not his whole career. I hope they freeze him out because he’s a cancer.

  • Mo Charlo Posted: Apr.17 at 10:16 am
Cosign Cheryl. He needs to understand that he’ll never accomplish anything on his own.

  • Faz Posted: Apr.17 at 10:19 am
As a player and person – Marion is not a cancer. But I will agree that the fat contract expectations that he comes with is a big-time cancer. Marion is great. And it ain’t like he’s still young. He has reached that stage in his career where he wants stability. I think he deserves at least that. Someone will take him, you can’t buy the skills and experience he has.I also agree with you Ken in the sense that make you should whatever money you can, while you can! Once you are in the league you gotta look out for yourself. Just make sure that it doesn’t make you an ass-hole!

    Whatta schlub

  • mat smith Posted: Apr.17 at 10:34 am
Shawn looking after himself? wow, I am so suprised….

  • Russ Bengtson Posted: Apr.17 at 10:48 am
Replace “this” with “every,” and we’re good.

  • cordeazy Posted: Apr.17 at 10:56 am
    come to detroit!!!!

  • Blinguo Posted: Apr.17 at 11:05 am
And in his new team’s locker room in Oct. he will say “its a whole different experience here, they just go out and play basketball. I’m trying to move on from that other stuff everyone else was making a big deal about. I won’t let it go I’ll remember that but I’m not going to let it hold me down,” AGAIN. Miami won with the trade no doubt even if it was a horizontal player/contract equal for player equal move.

  • Darksaber Posted: Apr.17 at 11:42 am
in other words, same plans as usual, eh Matrix?

  • vmcb Posted: Apr.17 at 1:10 pm
I’d love to see him back in a Raptors jersey next season so long as he doesn’t sign for anything crazy over the midlevel. He started playing really well the past few weeks of the season, right when the Raps were hitting their stride.

  • underdog Posted: Apr.17 at 1:23 pm
Calling that Heat team bad is an understatement. Anyway if somebody’s stock went downhill this season, it’s Marion’s. Well, and Iverson’s.

  • Plasticman Posted: Apr.17 at 2:02 pm
Anyway, can’t be bothered reading the comments, I’m lazy like that, but… Shawn Marion being selfish? Gee that’s a first. In other news, Shaquille O’Neal is a bit of a joker.

  • Holly MacKenzie Posted: Apr.17 at 2:22 pm
Let it also be said that he came in wearing his sunglasses and when asked to take them off by our PR guy, said “Nah, I’m wearing these today, I’m Hollywood.” He also told us he’s heading to Niagara Falls today, and then Montreal because he heard it’s crazy and that we can all follow him on Twitter. I swear, he made the five-hour day of waiting worth it. I felt like I needed to pinch myself because his interview wasn’t really happening.

Shawn Marion is a darsh.. staaaan darsh

  • RM Posted: Apr.17 at 2:26 pm
All we need is for our raptors to sign Chris Bosh.. get a lottery pick, and draft Jon Wall. Is that too much to ask?

  • Blinguo Posted: Apr.17 at 4:03 pm
    @Holly.
That blows worse than the big bad wolf and the 3 lil piggies, word to the Simpsons visiting that mother goose story land and Bart saying about the diorama exhibit in action: “it blows alright, it blows bigtime.”
AP/ESPN/ETC. have tarnished reputations with locker room antics and egos much bigger than Shawn, surprising nobody calls him a cancer, or T.O. of the NBA instead simply falling back to his do it all swiss army knife potential(which EBOY said, yeah, but without half the tools that come in the others).

  • Allenp Posted: Apr.17 at 5:17 pm
    Bryan
He looked our for Steve Nash a lot on defense. Amare too.

  • ciolkstar Posted: Apr.17 at 5:58 pm
He sucks now. Its gonna be funny when NOBODY wants to pay him what he thinks he’s worth. I see midlevel in his future.

  • Tuwana Posted: Apr.17 at 6:27 pm
Shawn has never received the proper respect for the role he played in Phoenix. He is at an age where he needs to look out for numero uno. As we all know teams come and go.

  • albie1kenobi Posted: Apr.17 at 7:13 pm
this guy seems to be in one of those chappelle’s “when keeping it real goes wrong”.

  • FLUXLAND Posted: Apr.17 at 7:13 pm
vmcb, the Raptors never, ever hit any stride of any sort. Let’s not start pouring chocolate fudge on an ice cream made of dog you know what.

  • Screech Posted: Apr.17 at 7:55 pm
he’ll go to the highest bidder…simple….it wont matter if its the washington generals or a team in europe….the matrix goes for self.

  • nba-jersey-king Posted: Apr.17 at 9:36 pm
Marion has gone downhill – he used to be a fan favorite… now he is just a loser going down in his career….

  • Luke Posted: Apr.17 at 11:31 pm
I’ve got to be selfish right now because I can’t worry about nobody, I’ve got to worry about myself.’” About sums this guy up.

im a huge suns fan, and i do kinda miss him being their. he just hated being 3rd best on an all star caliber team. but when amare went down with his injury, marion looked so great on defence, i mean blocking shots guarding bigger men, it was insane. then he got big headed, and thought he could be a kobe, thats what he said, he wanted to be the number one guy on a team. then he just sucked in the last 3-4 seasons, now hes just a nobody…
but im glad that my blazers are upcoming. i missed them.
    go blazers!

  • $tev3 Posted: Apr.18 at 4:18 pm
Maybe A.I. & Matrix should be on a team together
    JK

  • Quail Posted: Apr.18 at 6:44 pm
if the kings can draft a good pg like Lawson or Jennings, Marion might do ok with them. If Kevin Martin can accept giving up a lil bit of scoring for the sake of the team.

  • that dude Posted: Apr.19 at 8:11 pm
Why shouldn’t he look out for himself though? It’s not like he’s selling drugs to “feed his kids” or some ish.

  • Dacre Posted: Apr.19 at 11:53 pm
Quail: I think Shawn Marion could go to Kings, but not really expect him to average over 25 pts or anything…although his contract size would generate the expectation that he should….
Basically the season has proven one thing….He isn’t a top tier star, he is a capable athletic supporting player that can put up amazing numbers but doesn’t carry a team. Like your Kyrilenko’s and T-MACS. The thing is – As a veteran player your expecting a particular mental approach to playing basketball, a quality that makes you better than your stat line actually is… Like a Scottie Pippen or Shane Battier type – unfortunately Marion, really isn’t as good as his stat line shows… but he’ll get his money somewhere.

  • Joel O's Posted: Apr.20 at 12:03 am
Who does he think he is? Shawn Marion can go f*ck himself, seriously. If you can’t be happy in PHX, what good team out there is going to let him take as many chest shots as he wants? The way things are, Shawn either lands on a winning team who wants him to be their 4th option or so (another marriage of convenience doomed to inevitable failure) or another bottom feeder team willing to let him jack up as much ugly jumpers as he wants. I hope he lands up in the Philippines or something, because I don’t think his biatchy attitude’ll sit nicely with a European club, either.
