Chandler and Okafor Swapping Teams?

by Ryne Nelson

AP says the Cats and the Hornets are close to “finalizing a trade.” The Worldwide Leader says News Orleans and Charlotte are in “advanced discussions” about swapping centers. At least two “anonymous” sources back up the reports. Early word about this summer blockbuster seems promising, yet we’re not removing the question mark from the title of this post.

It’s not that we’re afraid. Ha! Whoever suggested that?! We would remove the question mark in a quick step if it wasn’t Tyson Chandler’s pesky big toe we’re talking about.

From The Times-Picayune:

The New Orleans Hornets are talking to the Charlotte Bobcats about a possible trade that includes Hornets center Tyson Chandler, according to league sources.

The deal calls for the Hornets to trade Chandler for Charlotte center Emeka Okafor.

Work the logistics out on this one for us because it doesn’t make sense for the Hornets. Oak and T-Chandler make similar bank for the next two years, but Okafor is locked in like a vice for four additional seasons. If the Chandler experiment doesn’t work in Charlotte, at least they’ll have an opportunity to start fresh in 2011.

There has to be something/someone else coming from the Charlotteans to sweeten this deal, right? The Hornets would be wise to measure this move carefully. Not only does it affect the team, long-term but, more importantly, it affects Chris Paul’s future as well.

If only OKC could have snagged Okafor…

  • http://www.realcavsfans.com Anton

The real 2007-2008 MVP is not going to like this…

  • Joz

How does this help either team?

  • Texxus Boy

Okafor, Howard, and Duncan are the only three players to average a double-double the past five seasons.

Chandler’s done it once in his career.

Let that sink in, M.J. is a dumb G.M./prez. I would run him outta town, because he doesn’t have clue.

meka is better than chandler. money move by betcats. basketball move by hornets.

  • http://www.manutd.com Z

that’s a very bizarre trade for charlotte. it doesn’t help them at all. they have enough problems scoring the basketball as it is. chandler will NEVER get 15 a game for them. weird.

  • http://www.slamonline.com wayno

    I don’t understand this at all…

  • http://slamonline Negetivekreep

Wonder if Larry brown has anything to do with this Move?

  • http://www.slamonline.com wayno

But Okafor seems like a Larry Brown kind of player…Plus he’s younger and better than Chandler.

  • wilz

cmon, theyve been tryin to get rid or chandler for a while now, to get a legit young guy like okafor instead of that garbage trade from last year? how is that in any way surprising…or dumb on the hornets part

  • Teddy-the-Bear

This trade is not good for either team… Chris Paul is going to jet one of these days.

  • http://slamonline.com Brad Long

They should trade Tyson Chandler for 07-08 Tyson Chandler.

  • Royal

Anton:Why would KOBE not like this???????

  • http://www.slamonline.com James the Balla

Hey BET, remember you making fun of me for saying Tyson was good. And you said he sucked, and he was only good at alley’s. And without Chris Paul he would bring down any team … :D !!!

  • ron

    who cares ?

  • http://www.alllooksame.com Tarzan Cooper

that one is great james. i wish i saw where he said that. ha

when a team is all about money and … not sport
    silly N-O

  • http://www.myspace.com/freedmusic fredd

oops … here it’s CHA the dumbs haha sorry

  • DollaChoppa

Good for the hornets. This helps probably their biggest problem. Will be interesting to see if collison/thornton solvees their bench issues. Now if somehow they could dump peja/posey/mo pete/daniels for something.

  • http://www.slamonline.com James the Balla

Last year we wre arguing about Tyson and Bosh. Pretty funny how Tyson will be rolling with Cats squad. Almost makes LO being traded worth while. If they trade LO. I wonder who the Lakers will sign instead.

  • Bad Newz Baller

haha Tyson Chandler and Vlad Radmonovic on the same team?? Yall remember in 07-08 when Radman punked Chandler. Chandler is in my top 5 of players i hate!

heres the link of the game..

    aw hell naw!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Noooooooooooooooo

  • http://www.hibachi20.blogspot.com BETCATS

  • http://www.hibachi20.blogspot.com BETCATS

If we dont get something like Julian Wright or Rasual Butler, i WILL kill Higgins and Jordan. You guys can book me for double homicide right now….

  • http://www.slamonline.com Todd Spehr

I thought Diaw really helped Okafor when he came aboard (EO: 17 and 11 in their first full mth together), so I’m not sure it’s a good move. Plus, Okafor is younger; and Chandler’s body may not hold up. Who knows?

  • http://www.hibachi20.blogspot.com BETCATS

    this is just terrible

  • http://www.hibachi20.blogspot.com BETCATS

I had a good day today. This just messes EVERYTHING up. Me cap-locking on random words means i am p!ssed and flustered.

  • niQ

To be honest, I see Chandler as more athletic than Okafor. I could see Chandler helping the Bobcats, but I don’t see Okafor helping the Hornets as much. He’s a Center who should be playing PF, but they already have David West.

  • http://www.hibachi20.blogspot.com BETCATS

i am going to cry myself to sleep, but i must be dreaming/having a nightmare. THIS IS NOT HAPPENING

  • http://www.hibachi20.blogspot.com BETCATS

i need to go sh!t in a bag, light it on fire, and leave it on Micheal Jordan’s door. Bye

  • http://www.triplejunearthed.com/dacre Dacre

    I don’t mind this trade rumour…

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com Blinguo

Ryne sure picks out the best pics to highlight these guys. Milsap lost under the boards and now Okafor wanting nothing to do with Bosh’s Raptor slap chop pose, full killer expression on. And wow, The Okaforce man out of Charlotte? For the salary dump-we overpaid this guy-Tyson chicken bones Chandler? – Stay up (keep your head up, not forgoing sleep in this nightmare) BET.

  • http://slamonline Ronnie

chandler may not be as effective with a guy like chris paul or steve nash feeding him the ball

  • niQ

lol its ok BET, if Bosh gest traded out of the Raptors I will prolly have the same reaction.

  • jose

i really dont see tha point of this trade…i mean okafor is better than chandler but chandler and cp3 got chemistry. i cant see okafor gettin alley oops from cp3.thhats just me tho

  • http://www.myspace.com/freedmusic fredd

co sigh jose, … talking chemistry, and chandler has value in hornets city, not elsewhere … where he’s just a fragile body without double figures …
damn … i can’t believe Jordan runs this team .. it must be someone using his hologram image

  • Teddy-the-Bear

No fredd, its the real Jordan who runs the Bobcats; the same Jordan who drafted Kwame Brown. I know right?

  • Teddy-the-Bear

Obviously Chandler is more athletic than Dwayne Wade’s posterchild… And longer. But Emeka is a younger, developing talent who has much more skill. In other words, Chandler will be ineffective in Charlotte, and Emeka will slow the Hornets down.

  • Richie

Emeka isn’t younger, why does everyone say that?

  • dhowardmagic

Doesn’t this hurt both teams? I mean Chris Paul loses his aley-oop and in the paint finisher in Chandler and the Bobcats lose their true defender and intimidator in the paint? Okafor can’t finish the way Chandler can off Paul’s passes and Chandler can’t play defense the way Okafor can.

  • Robb

    “M.J. is a dumb G.M./prez.”

    You sure?
This is not only about the quality of the players, it’s about money, cap space etc. Being GM/prez as you say it’s a bit more complicated than you think.

  • Airswade

This trade does not make sense for either team.

  • D12FSU

doesnt emeka and david west play the exact same way and are pretty much the same size?

  • Danny W UK

Emeka is infinitely more tradeable than Tyson. If it doesn’t work, by All Star, Emeka will be gone, and they’ll get someone far better than if they’d shipped Tyson. For the Bobcats? It’s about saving cash in a couple of years, or even retiring Tyson to the I/L.

  • http://thebestnbablog.blogspot.com Alex B.

see why this is a good move for the Hornets and a bad move for the Bobcats

  • MattM

@ Richie: you’re correct. Okafor is actually like 2 weeks older than Chandler. Chandler has been in the L longer. Maybe thats what everyone means.

  • Will

Just because Chandler finishes a couple oops doesn’t mean he’s all that valuable to the team. CP has to be smart enough to recognize this as a move that is done to make them better as a team. Emeka is a better overall player than Tyson, point blank. It won’t be nearly as exciting but Emeka can actually score in the post without CP creating it for him. As a huge Hornets fan, I have to say I would be very excited about this move, since we have done NOTHING to try and shake things up after a sub-par season.

  • Jake

It makes sense since Chandler is damaged goods and won’t ever be able to play at the level he did during the 56 win season. Okafor actually helps us win games by playing instead of waving a towel on the sidelines

  • http://adfji.com Jukai

Anyone who thinks Tyson is more valuable than Okafor is literally insane. This goes for the person who wrote this in the first place.

  • DollaChoppa

People in here are acting like its some kind of amazing skill to dunk the basketball like chandler did in alley oops. All Chandler had to do was run to the basket and cp3 gave his perfectly placed balls. All he had to do was dunk. Emeka isnt going to slow the hornets down. 1) Because Im pretty sure, despite public perception, the Hornets are a slow paced team. 2) Tyson didnt play in half the games anyway so think of this trade as an upgrade over hilton armstrong (a homeless mans tyson chandler) and melvin ely.
David West is better outside of the paint, shooting jump shots, so hopefully having emeka will give the hornets someone who can actually score in the paint because before it was only when cp3 drove in.

  • riggs

    whats an oka for?

  • Josh D

This is a good move 4 the Hornets, Okafor is better than Chandler
