Bill Walton’s Broadcast Career is Over

Throw in the towel, big man! Throw it in. (Seriously, happy trails, Bill. You were great.): “As I return after a grueling multi-year, life-threatening, life-changing ordeal with back problems, it is time to dedicate the rest of my life to service. … Thanks everybody — for everything.”‘

“The worst entry pass in the history of Western civilization.” You will be missed, Bill.

  • tavoris Posted: Nov.2 at 3:05 pm
I always enjoyed Walton’s commentary…gonna miss the big fella on TV.

  • Jukai Posted: Nov.2 at 3:08 pm
Remember when the garbage players were in during the FIBA American games and they got REALLY boring and Walton would just go on crazy tangents about those South American countries that no one would know but Bill Walton?
    Lord, I’ll miss him…

  • Chris C Posted: Nov.2 at 3:13 pm
Walton and Steve “Snapper” Jones were always my fav commentator combo..You will be missed in the booth Bill

  • Da Hood Posted: Nov.2 at 3:34 pm
    A sad day indeed.

  • Dirtybird Posted: Nov.2 at 3:36 pm
Big bummer, get Frank Caliendo’s number.

  • snasty10 Posted: Nov.2 at 3:37 pm
i remember in Ankle breakers volume two… the carmelo portion… where he discribed melo as “an Offensive genius”

  • dirty frank Posted: Nov.2 at 3:39 pm
I miss you already Bill. Enjoy retirement.

  • Anton Posted: Nov.2 at 3:57 pm
I learned more about geography and other countries’ history in a few Walton-announced FIBA games than all the years of school. Fact.

  • CDef28 Posted: Nov.2 at 3:59 pm
Am I the only guy glad to see him go?

  • mike Posted: Nov.2 at 4:06 pm
injuries even forced his retirement from broadcasting

  • Czar Ruke Posted: Nov.2 at 4:06 pm
    Yes, you are.

  • la huey Posted: Nov.2 at 4:06 pm
health issues seem to derail anything career he tries. you’ll be missed, big red.

  • Jrooks Posted: Nov.2 at 4:24 pm
    One of the greats

  • LexLuther Posted: Nov.2 at 4:30 pm
@ CDEF28 nah homie im in the same boat as you. Hell of a baller and i hope he comes through these health issues okay, but the commentating was hella stale. youll be missed big red, just not in the booth

  • chiqo Posted: Nov.2 at 4:34 pm
i disliked him as a color guy, but being forced to retire from anything because of health sucks. sucks worse when it happens twice.

  • Joe Posted: Nov.2 at 4:35 pm
    HHHOOORRRIBBBLEEEEE!!!!

  • Riiver Posted: Nov.2 at 4:40 pm
gonna definitely miss him. Thanks Bill

  • riggs Posted: Nov.2 at 4:55 pm
dont know why many of you liked him, he friggin sucked as a commentator

  • Justin Posted: Nov.2 at 5:11 pm
could not stand to hear his dumbass calling games

  • JB Posted: Nov.2 at 5:16 pm
I pray for more NBA classics to be released on DVD…NBA on NBC’s commentators were appreciated. Though Hannah now > Hannah then.

  • Randy Brown Posted: Nov.2 at 5:46 pm
    Noooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!

  • andrew Posted: Nov.2 at 6:14 pm
This should be excellent news. Bill Walton is easily one of the worst sports commentators ever (notice that I mentioned all sports, not merely basketball). Instead, I have little if nothing to be thankful for because nearly every NBA game that I watch, I am forced to listen to the comments of supreme idiots Van Gundy and Mark Jackson. I thought that it could not get any worse than Bill Walton. Clearly, I was mistaken. The Gundy/Jackson commentary causes me to seriously consider muting the sound during games.

  • Nokaholik Posted: Nov.2 at 6:22 pm
Drugs and injuries finally took a toll on the dude

  • Sam Snead Posted: Nov.2 at 6:48 pm
“Nick Van Exel is putting on a 1 on 9 exhibition out there!” He then dribbles past half court, “Please, just shoot it from there, Nick!”

I’m not gonna lie: I won’t miss you at all mr. Walton, but I hope you’ll enjoy your life, and you’re staying healthy.

  • TADOne Posted: Nov.2 at 7:30 pm
I used to hate Bill Walton, but then I am forced to listen to Reggie Miller….and…yeah.

  • El Chinas. Posted: Nov.2 at 7:56 pm
Check this: http://ballhype.com/story/bill_walton_likes_drugs/ Whatever he was, he sure was unique. I actually enjoyed his rants during the FIBA NA Championships – nothing beats a good bit of knowledge.

  • The D Train Posted: Nov.2 at 8:51 pm
If you did not enjoy your trip to Waltonia, then there is something seriously wrong with you, or you take announcers way too seriously. Walton’s over-the-top hyperbole was great, and when paired with Snapper’s comebacks they formed a tag-team duo for the ages. Snapper had the best job ever…just make some semblance of sense and argue with Walton’s over-exaggerations. B-Dubb’s crazy jags made every game an adventure. I, for one, will seriously miss him. Throw it down big man! Throw it down!

  • The D Train Posted: Nov.2 at 9:01 pm
and to pay homage to the biggest of big men, a series of quotes from the nether-reaches of Waltonia: “But you have to understand, my beard is so nasty. I mean, it’s the only beard in the history of Western civilization that makes Bob Dylan’s beard look good.” “Walton: That has to be a foul.
    Snapper: Against who?
Walton: Against the game of basketball.” “Robert Horry is one of the top defensive players of this era” ” ahhh Danny Schayes, son of hall of famer Dolph Schayes. The only way Danny’s getting in is by paying $7 admission like everyone else.” “I’m old enough to remember when Jeff McInnis was playing well” “John Stockton is one of the true marvels, not just of basketball, or in America, but in the history of Western Civilization”

  • la huey Posted: Nov.2 at 9:20 pm
for the greater part of an nba game, color commentary is boring and worthless (unless hubie brown is calling it). for the most part, i just need stat updates (fouls, timeouts, etc). walton’s commentary was entertaining.

  • jrb Posted: Nov.2 at 10:56 pm
walton was a sicckkkk broadcaster. he will be greatly missed

  • RoyistheBoy Posted: Nov.2 at 11:12 pm
Walton is one of my all-time faves. At times he was a very insightful guy. He brought another level of entertainment to the game.
    He will be missed.

  • ghost (of lionel simmons) Posted: Nov.2 at 11:20 pm
damn i hated his commentary. always biggin up his playin days and including himself with the all time greats like we couldn’t tell..and him gushing over his son while broascasting lakers game was vomit inducing.

  • doyouwantmore Posted: Nov.3 at 12:22 am
YES!! Thank you! Enjoy doing something other than your one-sided commentary Bill. I can’t say I will miss listening to you ooh and ah over one team for years. (Seriously though, congrats Bill. Still a good guy. lol)

  • oddball Posted: Nov.3 at 12:23 am
I used to hate the guy when I was younger cuz I always felt he was biased against the knicks, but as I got older I liked him a lot cuz I could see how much passion he had for ball…this is too bad…

  • Teddy-the-Bear Posted: Nov.3 at 12:31 am
Congratulations on a long and prosperous career and enjoy your retirement, big fella!

  • Tariq Posted: Nov.3 at 12:59 am
Good luck, Bill. Not a fan.

  • JoeMaMa Posted: Nov.3 at 2:02 am
co-sign Tariq. I’ve never hated a commentator so much, based entirely on your biased calling of the Raps/Knicks series so long ago. But all the best to you in your future endeavours.

  • Reece Posted: Nov.3 at 2:41 am
Hey guys just wondering if Walton’s back issues were brought on by the demanding schedule of an NBA broadcaster. I’m a high schooler in Australia right now and would like to broadcast NBA one day, so just curious if anyone knows how physically demanding broadcasting is.
    Thanks

  • Dacre Posted: Nov.3 at 8:56 am
My favourite BIll Walton commentary was when he compared BORIS DIAW to MOZART. ^_^

  • Jacqueline Mitchell Posted: Nov.3 at 11:15 am
I wonder if we will see him at more Laker home games this season?

  • JDH21 Posted: Nov.3 at 11:31 am
Cliff Robinson is the most unstoppable force in the NBA, only Cliff Robinson can stop Cliff Robinson. This Has to be a foul.
    Against Who?
Against the game of basketball. That was the worst inbounds pass in Phoenix Suns Franchise History. - Just a few Gems of Bill Walton.

  • tavoris Posted: Nov.3 at 2:34 pm
Reece, I swear your question looks like it’s pulled right out of Yahoo Answers…
