Charles Oakley is Unimpressed by Raptors

Whenever Oak speaks, we’re morally obligated to shine light on his words: “On today’s Raptors ‘You ain’t going nowhere with 7-footers shooting three-pointers. You can’t put four or five scorers on the floor at one time. You can, but you ain’t going nowhere. You got four or five scorers on the floor, ain’t enough shots in a game, in a quarter, for everybody to be consistent. You need your two scorers, outside threat and a post-up threat. You need your sixth man who can score. You need another guy that can just be an all-around energy guy, and you need another guy who can just, you know, play basketball.”‘

    I may be the one human being in the world who sort of detests Charles Oakley.
    OH WOW REALLY Oakley we need eight players, two of them outside shooters, one amazing post up player, one point, one sixth man scorer, one ENERGY guy, and one guy who can “just play basketball” THANKS Oak, let’s go out and get them it’s that easy yeah!

    let him become an assistent to toughen bosh and banani up who is their starting small forward. plus don’t forget he doesn’t like european players the raptors are practicly a european team in the nba with their style of play and make up with only one or two americans in the starting line up.

    He actually makes a lot of sense.I don’t know why more teams don’t try to model themselves after the 90′s Bulls or Sonics.2 scorers,someone who is content with passing,a rebounder and a center that stands around taking up space.Now that’s a good starting lineup.

    That was the most vague description of every team in the nba. No wonder no one wants this guy to coach. “I want a post up player, i want a guy that can bang, i want a sixth man that can shoot, i want a…” BTW, charles oakley isn’t very smart.

    His take on it is pretty dang pedestrian but he’s got a point. If you’re gonna put that many scorers out there then just turn them into a Phoenix clone and run and gun, but if you actually want some structure you’re gonna need to have at least a couple guys that hustle, set screens, rebound and get back on D. Plus a guy who can throw some bows every now and then wouldn’t hurt either.

    You guys are all making fun of him but he has a solid point. The Raptors are built around a front court that consists entirely of perimeter players. Because they are good perimeter players that doesn’t reduce the efficiency of their offence too much but it certainly makes rebounding/interior defense a recurring problem. The inside/outside scoring combo is the foundation of any team looking to go deep in the playoffs, and the Raps simply do not have it.

    I don’t see why some of yall are acting like Oak is nuts for saying that. Of course all those pieces are not easy to obtain but if you look at the teams that one the title in the last 5 years, they are pretty much exactly what Oak described.

    What the cRaptors needs to do, in order to toughen up their front line, is for someone in the front office to call Oak, and tell him that Bosh and Bargnani owe him money. Oak will show up at their practice and slap them across the mouf.
    Oak’s description of how to resolve the Raps’ problem was pretty vague and basic. “Hmmmm..what a basketball team needs is a big guy, a shooter, a handler, energy guys and a bench guy.” Spot on Oak. His description of the problem was spot on though. The Raps are soft and susceptible to being punked by teams that play tough, physical D (Celtics). You think Bargnani is going to stand up to KG, Rasheed and Perkins when they start throwing forearms and elbows? Doubtful.
    @ Michael NZ: yep, he is. So is Tyrone Hill. Bitch betta have my money.
    @ knock knock: Oak is always excellent at pointing out problems, but not the best at resolving them. Oak has a problem solver, and its name is revolver.

    The only thing I agree with him on is the “You ain’t going nowhere with 7-footers shooting three-pointers”. Although Bargnani has showed that he can take it to the rim, I watched him settle for the jumper against Orlando, and damn was it ever frustrating. @ab_40, the whole toughen Bosh up thing is just stupid, dude added 20 pounds of muscle this off-season, he’s been taking it to the rim often and he contained Howard a lot better than how he has in the past. As a team, they’ll be tougher when Reggie Evans returns, no doubt.

    the raps have a 2 post scoreres in bosh and bargnani hedo just knows how to play basketball and the passers are belinelli and calderon it just happens that they can all shoot the ball. Jack is the 6th man that can just score. They re alright but still need improvement

    Oak is right!he said in Charles’ style but essentially, you can’t have 2 bigs who basically are jump shooters.
    Toronto perimeter defense is horrible! what makes it worst is coach triano chooses to start Demarcus and Bargnani who are not good defenders.
    JJ Reddick looked like Michael Jordan on Sunday against the Raptors with his inside ,outside game.I know he is a good player but he is not that good!
    yeah …Oak said it well ,you can’t win with 5 jump shooters on your team.BTW how many NBA championship the Phoenix Suns have won with their style? NONE! …that’s what I thought!

    Oakley isn’t looking at the big picture. There is obviously more than 1 way to win. Everyone is saying you can’t win with 5 shooters/scorers on the floor. That is a narrow statement because Toronto is clearly having no trouble on the offensive end of the floor. It comes down to whether or not those 5 shooters can play defense. Look at the 2006 Dallas Mavericks (Western Conference Champs) with Dirk Nowitzki and tell me that “You ain’t going nowhere with 7-footers shooting three-pointers”

    BTW cool j, the Raptors play nothing like the style of the Phoenix Suns. I can’t think of a team that they are modeled after. They score almost effortlessly but there goal is to be a top defensive team.

    josh Howard can shoot but he is a slasher,Dallas had a true centre unlike Toronto.They would’ve never reached that with level Dirk playing the “5″.
    I have read and a lot comparison between Dirk and Barg.The major difference for me that people ignore is that Dirk is much more athletic than Barg,he’ll score over you all day.Meanwhile Bar needs to have his feet set and he needs space to take his shot.he has very little elavation.I still think saying that he can average 20 pints for the rap but not as the starting centre!

    I love Oak, but in case he didn’t notice, CB4 is averaging 14 boards a game right now, PLUS nearly 30 points. And if you have a 7 footer like Bargnani that can drive like he’s a point guard, why would you have him standing “taking up space” all the time? The fact is that they have a bunch of players that can do different things, which is why they can score 100+ points/game. What they have to do now is learn how to win games, which comes down to experience, teamwork, character, and all those other things that don’t show up in the stats.

    I can’t disagree with a thing he said. He’s says things in such a simple, honest and direct way, it’s sometimes hard to tell how high his game IQ actually is. Like Oak, I’d like to see Butch come back and coach somewhere – cleveland could certainly use a coach that knows how to create offensive schemes and really develop a star (versus just leaning on one).
