Jerry Sloan Not Punished for Bumping Ref

Everyone is afraid of Jerry, including evidently, the League’s front office. From the Deseret News: “Longtime Jazz coach Jerry Sloan has escaped punishment for his recent run-in with referee Michael Smith. A review of the incident is complete and there is ‘nothing’ in terms of a fine or suspension for Sloan, an NBA spokesman said Sunday. ‘It’s good news, and business as usual,’ Jazz general manager Kevin O’Connor said Sunday night. Sloan made contact with Smith with 0.2 seconds remaining in Friday night’s loss at Phoenix, but the contact — according to a Jazz spokesman — was deemed ‘incidental’ by the league. The last time he made contact with a referee, shoving Courtney Kirkland during a 2003 game in Sacramento, Sloan was suspended seven games without pay. A similar incident in 1993 cost him one game.”

Cut the man some slack. He was just having a flashback to his days as an “enforcer” with Da Bulls.

not surprised. the ref didnt look like he felt he was in any danger. was just a bump. however if it was Artest or Z-BO or someone doing the bumping guy would have a death sentence.

This is BS. At the least sloan should get suspended for a game or 3. He actively put his forearm in the refs chest, there was nothing incidental or non-intentional about it. The ref did have a delayed reaction to it and didn’t seem to think about it until a few seconds later (after one of Sloans players pulled the coach back) and that’s when the ref booted him from the game. But the L needs to be more consistent about these things because now a precedent is set that a player or coach can forearm refs and have nothing happen to them. So I’m going to wait for Sheed or Artest or another player with a ‘bad ref image’ does it and shee how the L justifies the disparate treatment.
