Will Michael Jordan Change the Bobcats’ Name?

Forget about the so-called “pressing issues”, as the Bobcats’ new owner, MJ’s first order of business might have to do with the (unpopular) name of his business: “If Michael Jordan listens to his customers, and potential customers, he’ll seriously consider a name change from ‘Bobcats’ once his purchase of Charlotte’s NBA franchise is complete. Too many of you have emailed me with that suggestion not to think it’s an issue to many Charlotteans. You didn’t like Bob Johnson naming the team after himself, and you sure don’t see this as a positive once Johnson is no longer majority owner. This wouldn’t be cheap. I spoke with an NBA executive who estimated it would cost the franchise anywhere from $3 million to $10 million to rebrand the team.”

    The impact of a team name on sales is a bit overrated. People will get used to any name as long as the team is succesful and the unis aren’t disgusting. You mean to tell me that Lakers, Nuggets or Spurs aren’t stupid names? There’s no need to change the name, just put a better product out there with household names.

    The article makes a good point about Mario Lemieux being very visible for Pittsburgh. I think that’s mainly the added value of someone like MJ if he’s willing to play that game instead of playing golf in Scottsdale year-round.

    For those who want to change the OKC Thunder’s name, check out Bill Simmons’ stuff at ESPN. He’s been calling them the ZombieSonics for awhile now since they were the Seattle Sonics, that team died, and rose from the dead in Oklahoma City. They look like the Sonics, but aren’t the Sonics since the Sonics are dead. Hence, ZombieSonics, or just OKC Zombies for short.

    The Jazz moved to Utah where they don’t allow music. The Hornets moved to Nawlins where they don’t have any bees nests. Jordan became the owner of the Charlotte Bobcats and changed the name to the Charlotte Here’s Jordan.

    The Charlotte Flight makes the most sense to me. 1.) It honors the heritage of the Wright brothers’ first flight and Kitty Hawk, NC 2.) There is an immediate connection to “Air” Jordan and Nike
