David Kahn on Draft Lottery: ‘A Hideous Experience’

The Wolves’ president of basketball operations tells the Star Tribune that he’s not a big fan of the Draft Lottery process: “David Kahn hates the NBA draft lottery, and that was before the Timberwolves became its victim again. ‘It is truly a hideous experience. It is just awful,’ the Wolves’ president said of Tuesday’s gathering of non-playoff teams, all praying that random luck could manage what their forlorn rosters could not. ‘You could almost sense the desperation in the room.’ Yet despite ending up with the fourth pick after turning in the second-worst record in the league, the Wolves’ roster overhaul is not necessarily in desperate shape. As Kahn said after the lottery, ‘we have enough of an arsenal” to acquire the foundation of a winner — draft picks, cap space and tradable assets.”‘

Following the Draft Lottery, David Khan visited the Player Haters Ball – where he also Loses, annually.

Well, the NBA draft lottery hates you too, David Kahn.
Don’t get mad that your draft strategy last year didn’t pan out. I mean, what could go wrong with drafting 50 point guards?

Well it would have sucked if they got number 1 pick. and the 2010 NBA Draft the t-wolves pick another point guard John Wall. Lol plus they can still get Wesley Johnson which isnt too bad :)

Hahahah, no sh!t Sherlock. When you draft a player who was pretty much openly against playing for your franchise, and you get no returns in the first year, you’re essentially back to square one. I could say, up to this point, “David Kahn Drafting in the Draft Lottery: A Hideous Experience”. This guy wasted a top 6 pick. A TOP 6 PICK!

I just liked that earlier in the day before the Lottery, Kahn said something like there were really three franchise guys in this Draft. And then the T-Wolves got the 4th pick.

No mention of “good players” in that foundation though, right Dave? PS. Wesley Johnson is not the answer.

Glen Taylor has much suffering to come for wasting so much of KG’s career. Make the best of your bad karma.

I was pulling sooooo hard for the Wolves to win the #1 pick. Then they’d have to draft John Wall, which would then allow them to trade Ricky Rubio to NY without losing face. They could say they’d rather have Wall, and that drafting 4583 PGs in the last year’s draft was just a strategy to stockpile assets instead of just a stupid blunder.

  • MikeC.

@LA Huey – What of Kevin McHale? He’s at least as complicit as Taylor in the wasting of KG’s prime. McHale seems to be doing okay. I mean, he was co-GM of the year in 2008. Now, after years of not wanting to coach his own roster in Minnesota, he’s more than willing to step into the big chair in Chicago. Seems like McHale knew the teams he built weren’t very good. Now that there’s a young, rising team with a bright future, McHale all of a sudden wants to coach? C’mon.

I’m pretty sure that Kahn would have drafted Wall at one if they won the lottery, then would have told everyone about his new revolutionary lineup featuring not one, not two, but three point guards. I still can’t believe how he handled the draft last year. Maybe something good comes out of it long-term, but I just can’t fathom drafting two point-guards back-to-back. It screams of complete idiocy.

i would never take this guy to vegas

    Haters!
I am a Nuggets fan and love to see division rivals fail. But all your comments are ignorant. Ricky Rubio will be a franchise player. Dude killed it in Euroleague, and showed flashes of absolute brilliance. For those still hating, look at Brandon Jenning’s experience in Italy. He averaged like 3 points? The style of play is so different over there. Rubio will thrive running the break, as his court vision is excellent. Wolves would have been stupid not to draft him, even knowing he they couldn’t buy him out of his contract and that he had no desire to play there. He was the best talent available.

It’s much harder to justify picking Flynn but no one knew Jennings would be as good as he is. They picked Flynn because they needed a PG and they knew Rubio would stay in Spain. Flynn may or may not be the long term answer, but only time will tell. As for picking Ty Lawson, they only drafted him for Denver (which is awesome!)

Had they won the lottery, you draft Wall. trade both Rubio and Flynn and get other young talent in return. Until the Wolves get Rubio, which will probably never happen, they will never be contenders, let alone make the playoffs.

The Wolves drafted the best they could, at least they didn’t draft Rubio and Jordan Hill. David Kahn may hate they lottery system, but maybe he should hate the fact that his team is awful( btw, the whole Al Jefferson didn’t work out). Even the Clipper’s future looks brighter. Sad day for T’Wolves fans, if there are any left.

    Go Nuggets, get Bosh!

Somewhere cold, rick kamla is losing it

  • Hembergler

Ten bucks says Kahn drafts Rubio again this year, just to be sure.

  • MikeC.

@Will – True, the Wolves are pretty bad, but you can’t say the Clippers have a brighter future. C’mon dude, they’re the freakin’ Clippers. They could field a lineup of Shaq, Duncan, Lebron, Kobe and Jason Kidd (in their primes), and still end up in the lottery. Clipper mojo smells like that nasty water that leaks out of the bottom of garbage dumpsters. It gets on anyone associated with the Clips and stays stuck until they smarten up and leave.

  • MikeC.

@Hembergler – Nicely done sir. Maybe they can draft Fran Vasquez too.
