Report: Tracy McGrady Is a Detroit Piston

After a few days of flirtation between the two sides, Yahoo! has the scoop that McGrady is now Detroit-bound: “Tracy McGrady has reach agreement on a one year, $1.3 million contract with the Pistons, league sources tell Y! Sports.”

So the Pistons may actually win 40 games now?

  • http://thekobebeef.wordpress.com LDR4

    Welcome to obscurity, Tracy.

  • Fat Lever

For real, what was the point of signing with the Pistons? I’m guessing as an audition for 2011-2012, if it ever happens. Chicago was the best fit, to me. No pressure, just go out and ball.

  • Nick the Quick

How long before Rip is asked to come off the bench and doesn’t like it but doesn’t complain about it publicly as the team implodes…

  • underdog

At least he can be a starter there. I mean for the first 15 games. After that, most likely he’ll be injured. Anyway, I hope he’ll be healthy and prove the doubters wrong…

*facepalm*… Don’t worry, they don’t have 3 starting calibur SG’s already…or 3 young SF’s that need to develop…great move. By al means, don’t sign a big man or a PG, add another past his prime, malcontent wing player. This is frustrating…

  • http://www.slamonline.com wayno

I just don’t get where he fits unless Tayshaun Prince and/or RIP is gone.

  • Kundai

    i hope he stays healthy

  • http://www.slamonline.com J

    just stay healthy, tracy.

  • http://www.slamonline.com J

why not sign AI too..? uhm.. oh nevermind..

  • T-Money

So, he’s basically the 5th swingman on the depthchart behing Rip, BG, Tay and Austin Daye? Not even couting the fact that Stuckey, Jerebko and Charlie V also spend time on the wing.

  • http://www.slamonline.com wayno

My big problem with this is that it will just bury Daye and Summers further on the bench…these guys need to play. Detroit sucks at developing young talent because they always bury their guys on the bench…I honestly think Darko would have been an ok player if they gave him some minutes early on…not 2nd pick material, but a decent NBA center for sure.

  • downtownbrownclown

    that’s how Joe D do… :P

  • http://www.slamonline.com J

seats guys, someone has to fill the palace.. though thats unlikely too..

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

Why didn’t he re-sign with New York if this is what he was willing to take? Better situation in my opinion, unless he hates Mike D.

  • Matt

He’ll play 20 games this next season max

  • Manumaniac

Tracy McGrady’s last year numbers in the Knicks VS Pistons (128-104) game: 21 points, 7 rebounds, 8 assists, 3 steals.
Prince had 16 points & 5 rebounds and Rip only 9 points & 5 rebounds.
I guess what I’m trying to say here, is that if this injury prone and shell of his former self T-MAC is capable of playing like that-even for one game only-against Tayshaun Prince and Richard Hamilton, then that is not something that your two team super-stars should be proud for.
Plain an simple… Put T-MAC in the starting line-up and trade Rip and Tayshaun for an All Star caliber guy. Nothing to miss. Eitherway, the Pistons will be out of the playoffs for sure!

  • The Philosopher

I can see McGrady not liking D’Antoni.

  • http://www.twitter.com/dfrance21 dfrance

I can see Momma D’Antoni not liking D’Antoni.

@Manumaniac Sorry dude, but that makes little to no sense.

  • Manumaniac

@dfrance: I was trying to be a little sarcastic, my friend… Anyway. My point? Either you have T-MAC or Rip and Tayshaun, is the same thing, cause eitherway you are not going anywhere. What the Pistons need is a real All Star. Just trade Rip and Tayshaun, that’s all I’m saying…

if tmac plays 70 games….ill run naked in times square

  • Manumaniac

@dfrance I was a little over-sarcastic, my friend, meaning that either with T-MAC or with Tayshaun and Rip, you are not going anywhere near the playoffs. Just trade Rip and Tayshaun, for a real All Star, that’s all I’m saying…

  • funkdoc

This is frustrating. I’m glad he found a team, but Detroit? Christ… Although I do think that the Prince-Rip era has been over since Billups left. Those guys are getting older, less valuable and actually trade material. They should have been traded already. I can’t understand why Detroit believes that Rip and Prince have something left in the tank. They should have traded Rip and Prince for a legit big man, and then you still have some nice players on the wing: T-mac, Jerebko (he’s got great potential), Charlie V, Daye, …

  • hoodsnake

I don’t think somebody will gamble on Iverson like they did Mac and Shaq. The free agency circus is over folks.

  • LA Huey

    Sorry, Piston fans =(

  • Jordan

Detroit has been a sorry team ever since they traded Billups. Their management has been terrible the last decade too

  • total scrotal implosion

Strange. I really do hope mac has a great year

  • Detroit Dave

I’m a Piston Fan and this just pissed me off.

  • barnabusb

I’m a Pistons fan and this just seems……weird. I guess it’s a low risk/high reward situation, where they could trade T-Mac to a contender or something for young talent if he actually performs well.

  • Overtime

Pistons management has been terrible for the last decade? There was a point where Joe D was considered the best GM in the league, was able to get Sheed, made some decent little moves. Since about 06 hes been terrible, and before bout 03, but hasnt been terrible for ten years

  • Overtime

You gotta believe there is a trade coming though right? Without looking at nba.com, the only big guys i can think of are Ben Wallace and Jason Maxiell? Help me out?

  • vtrobot

The trades/signings the Pistons have made the past several years are very Knicks-like. Odd to go from years of having such a balanced team to these years of these collections of players of the same positions.

I think they have Kwame Brown don’t they. I think the ONLY reason Dumars was considered such a great GM is because that superstar-less group was able to come together and win a title. Other than that he’s made some REALLY bad moves. Passing up on Melo and trading Chauncey to name a few.

  • total scrotal implosion

    Its all grant hills fault

  • 10 (1+3+6) reasons to cheer

You know, I heard that marbury guy might want an nba contract….

  • http://www.stonesthrow.com Michael NZ

Only reason they signed him is because the team had done nothing this offseason. Creates some fan interest, makes it seem like they’re tying to get better blah blah. “Hey we signed T-Mac, we’re didn’t just stand pat”. In reality, this move doesn’t change their win total one bit.

  • Shem

Ben Gordon, RIP and Tmac? It’s a bargain for the Pistons getting him for 1.3 prior to 23 mill but it’s going to be interesting who’ll be the 3rd string sg. I don’t see any of them playing PG and the only guard they have that can fit at SF is Tmac. But the Pistons have Prince and Daye. It’ll be interesting to see how this plays out.

man i really do wish the bulls would have signed him

  • Seven Duece

I’m pretty sure Rip & Prince are headed elsewhere.
