LeBron James: Race Factor in Post-’Decision’ Backlash

by Marcel Mutoni / @marcel_mutoni

When Team LeBron somehow came to the conclusion that it would be a good idea for James to announce his free agent decision during a 1-hour live television event, everyone (except for them) realized that things would never be the same.

The resulting fallout was immediate, loud, and ultimately predictable. According to LeBron and his best friend Maverick Carter (who serves as CEO of their marketing company), the public and media didn’t just turn on LBJ just because he’s bad at creating television programming — they claim that race played a role in some of the vitriol.

The topic was briefly discussed by the two on CNN last night. The Akron Beacon Journal has the pertinent quotes:

Maverick Carter admitted in an interview Wednesday night on CNN the execution of the “Decision” could have been better. LeBron James is proud of the $3 million the show raised for the Boys & Girls Club. Both men believe race has played a factor in the backlash James has received.

“I think so at times,” James said. “It’s always, you know, a race factor.” Added Carter: “It definitely played a role in some of the stuff coming out of the media, things that were written. For sure.” To be fair, the race question was posed by CNN reporter Soledad O’Brien. It was asked about halfway through the segment, both men answered separately and the piece proceeded with no further mention.

There’s been some discussion about the role of race and culture in the unrelenting post-”Decision” analysis, but this is the first time that anyone from the James camp has addressed the issue, making it significant since LeBron typically steers clear of such controversial subjects.

So, what do you guys think: Did people do a 180 on LeBron James because of the way he left Cleveland, or is he on to something when he brings up the race factor?

    This statement is untrue.

  • ZSmartHOOPHEAD

No racism whatsoever. Leave it to the hyper-liberal media to create the racism stories so they can develop a rapport with athletes and make a name for themselves and then point the finger at everyone for being a racist.

I do understand where LBJ is coming from. Why did so many people go ballistic over his decision when he said all along he was going to a place where he can win and win early and often? How hard was it to see he was going to choose Miami.

Historically, NBA dynasties have been built around combined powers forging into a force. Bill Russel had Sam Jones and Satch Sanders and a number of other top-flight ballers.

Jordan had arguably the league’s then best defender and fast break facilitator/finisher in Pippen and the best boardsmith in Rodman.

Look at who Kobe had last year. Do the math. Anyone else would have made that “decision” that was so heavily-hyped and so frowned upon by clowns

  • Blackphantom

I really really hope Lebron doesn’t think that it wasn’t his sudden egotistical action that had at least 97% to do with why most people don’t like him now

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

Wait, why is this the first time I am hearing that the proceeds from the 1-hour “Decision” special went to CHARITY? LeBron used his image to raise 3 FREAKING MILLION DOLLARS for the Boys and Girls club and all (almost) everyone does is h@te him for doing something HE HAD EVERY RIGHT TO DO IN THE FIRST PLACE? Good to know…

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

Tarzan you realize that you just undid your 1st comment with a double-negative, so you’re really saying T-Money’s statement is true? lol.

  • http://www.need4sheed.com Tarzan Cooper

Ive never seen a homeless guy with a bottle of gatorade

  • JTaylor21

TMoney’s statement is TRUE. That’s why the people that sat by idle and watched GBush break every freedom law under the constitution, started 2 wars and turned a blind eye to a failing economic are now protesting on the lincoln memorial and talking about wanting their country back. It’s all because Obama’s a black guy and Bush’s white, it goes to show that no matter how successful and powerful a black guy becomes there’s still going to be racism directed at him.

  • http://Slamonline.com Nbk

If everything was the same except LeBron stayed in Cleveland or brought his talents to broadway would y’all still dislike him? And out of those of you that don’t like the guy for the decision actually watched it?

  • Robb

behaving like a narcissistic jerk on national tv doesn’t have anything to do with race. You wanna go to another team? fine, it’s your right, but the “decision” thing was ridiculous. Lebron’s agents probably thought : “That CNN girl gave us a brilliant idea, let’s say it’s a racial thing so all the haters who are black can forgive him”. I think it’s an insult to black people to play the racial thing in this particular situation.

  • Michael

Jtaylor after reading through all of the comments here I can be certain of only one thing, YOU are an IDIOT. As for the actual topic here, I think it would be naive to say that race didnt play even a little part in the reaction but in saying that im a white basketball fan who thinks the decision was absolutely stupid and I have a strong dislike for LBJ, does that make me racist??

  • http://www.slamonline.com Wayno

ok first IF the things you said are true, that really doesn’t prove your point. Second, you’re putting the burden of proof on me to prove you right…that’s a little lame don’t you think? I’m not just going to believe those things because you said them. Anyways, I’m out for today, time to go home.

  • http://www.need4sheed.com Tarzan Cooper

Just because you dont have a lot of money to spend is no reason you shouldnt spend what little you have.

  • http://www.need4sheed.com Tarzan Cooper

Heres a tip from the power and light company on saving energy: if you have elderly people living with you, cut back on their heat and light. Old people often exaggerate how cold they feel.

  • JTaylor21

Michael, so you’re defending George Candynosed Bush and his moronic 8 years in office right. That clown should be in jail for all the crimes and laws that he broke in broad daylight. I don’t believe that people are defending and standing by The WORST president by far of all-time, SHAMWOW what’s this world coming to.

  • http://www.triplejunearthed.com/dacre Dacre

Coming in here “the day after”, i feel like the cleaner coming to service the room after a marilyn manson concert…. something went down in here last night…..

Sorry I missed it. I did read everyone of your comments too! Rush Bengston sighting…. That LeBron James… what a ball hog.

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

Again, I fail to see how you can seriously be mad at someone for donating $3 Million to charity.

  • The Fresh Prince of Nsam

BY THE COMMENTS I CAN SAY WHO’S WHITE AD WHO’S BLACK DOWN HERE (not that it matters but)…

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

Sorry JT, Bush is not the worst president of all-time, not even that close really.

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

Alright, caps lock time: WHO GIVES A F*CK ABOUT HOW IT “LOOKS” HAVING A 1-HOUR SPECIAL TO ANNOUNCE HIS DEPARTURE, IF IT WAS FOR A GOOD CAUSE PLEASE SHUT THE F*CK UP ALREADY. COT DAYUM. STOP MAKING A BIG DEAL OUT OF NOTHING.

  • JTaylor21

Alright Teddy enlighten your boy on just who is worst than a guy who f*cked over a whole coast during Katrina (because a majority of those people were black), started 2 wars, and ignored the economy which led to this financial meltdown. ENLIGHTEN ME!!!!!!

  • BBaller

To be fair, of course there were some elements of racism, but the majority of basketball fans who are really the only significant people to consider, believe it or not there are some people who don’t even know who Lebron is, feel negative towards Lebron, myself included, purely becoz of how he handle it, honestly as it never ever should, race has nothing to do with the current perception on Lebron. I hate everything about George Bush, i never consider his race, i Love Obama not becoz of his race but becoz of what he does.

  • http://Slamonline.com Nbk

JTaylor you get into arguments you have no business being in every single day. I used to argue for no reason and I can see from others how annoying that is, but this, among other things you just have no right being so confrontational and argumentative about topics you clearly have little to no legitimate education of.

  • JTaylor21

Like T-Money stated before it doesn’t matter how he did it but what matters is that it led to one of the best programs the inner city has ever seen getting 3 million F*CKING dollars. Do all you ignorant morons now how much money that is and I bet that no one on here has made that much combined in their entire live, yet people continue to b*tch and pout about “the way he did it” F*CK OUTTA HERE with that sh*t.

  • JTaylor21

NBK who the f*ck needs edumacation when I was there to witness the biggest blunder and injustice (apart from slavery, wiping out the indians, segregation, etc.) ever committed by the US govt. Unless you were in the gulf coast when that sh*t happened and witnessed it with your own eyes, you sir are the one with NO brain.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

I never claimed to witness first hand Hurricane Kitrina. I never downplayed anything about the event, or gave my opinion whatsoever. I also never claimed you were right or wrong about who the best or worst president in US history is. But I do know that you love arguing just for the sake of seeing your name on these message boards, I am just telling you that being this confrontational is not going to accomplish anything. Especially when day in and day out you have people telling you that your arguments -don’t make sense – are without proof or evidence – include needless insults – and yet you remain blatantly arrogant like at somepoint you have done something to earn the right to act the way you do. Stop fake cussing and acting hard, your on the internet.

feez22 U R My Man!!! (That’s in addition 2 Allenp (the new Scoop Jackson), JTaylor21 and THE PHILOSOPHER).
Any subject involving LBJ this summer has had 100+ comments. AWESOME, UPRECEDENTED!!!
    LONG… LIVE… THE KING (I feel u Philo)
All we need now is a ring i june 2011. BOOK IT! (and I’m out).

  • JTaylor21

Oh okay so now I’m acting hard, for who? I’ll never seen any of these commentators in real life, so who am I acting hard for or towards, RIDDLE ME THAT. All I’m stating is that I know what I’m talking bout when it comes to Bush’s blunders but you decided to twist it all up into I’m “acting” hard, SHAMWOW.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

and you need education because you were not there to witness everything that happened in the history of every single president. And its a matter of opinion, you have no statistics or proof, you just know that Bush dropped the ball and you suffered and saw the suffering first hand so ofcourse you are going to feel strongest about the person who presided over that disaster. What do you know about Millard Fillmore? James Buchanan? Andrew Jackson? all did some pretty horrible things as president. I’m no expert, so i don’t really know who’s the “worst” but what’s your opinion on their presidency’s since your the genius.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

i’m sorry i twisted it up and said your “acting” hard, stop “being” hard. haha shamwow, thats original

  • http://www.triplejunearthed.com/dacre Dacre

hey you two, i’m trying to clean up in here…can you take this squabble down to five brothers?

  • JTaylor21

Okay, maybe I should I’ve said he’s the worst president of the last 50 years since people on here like to look too deep into comments. Also you acting like going to school is going to expand your knowledge on presidents, I’m going to college right now and we have NEVER ever talked about any of those president’s blunders and I doubt colleges will ever do because they try to portray past presidents as freedom fighting, church going good guys which is obviously false.

  • The Fresh Prince of Nsam

Waoh! We’re gettig close to 400 comments. (Slam people, is this a record?) So there’s definitely a race factor (at least i the comments section).

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

if your in college you understand each class has a specific focus. If your not in a US History Class then ofcourse you haven’t been properly educated on the presidents (Also, I have never been in a classroom that tries to portray a president in that light, “church going good guys”). Your last comment eludes to the fact that you make statements (with specific words, which you focus on too, its how you read) that are, exaggerated, false, and/or ignorant. Your college education (or partial education) does not deem you smarter or more experienced then anyone in here. And more often then you think, your talking to a person with more life experience, and education then you.

  • http://www.triplejunearthed.com/dacre Dacre

I fractured my 4th metacarpsal in my right hand yesterday. I have to type real slowly, plus I can’t ball for months now (new local comp. starting in 2 weeks), I can barely play xbox and i’m worried it won’t ever heal well…. but i’m not going to have a one hour special about it.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

well even if you did, you couldn’t raise 3 million dollars for kids. just saying

  • MikeC.

Wow, things jumped up a notch while I was at work. Dudes are throwing fire around here.

  • JTaylor21

Come on son, this stupid argument is going nowhere but for your info I did take a US president history class, so yes I’ve a little bit of knowledge and the teacher or the book never mentioned any of those guys hidden blunders. The extent you go to defend those crooks like they are freaking monks is mind-boggling. They are like every other politician in that they will say or do anything just to get elected and re-elected.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

Who did I defend? Is English your first language? And you took a US President History Class? They offer that too undergrads where you go? I doubt it.

  • MikeC.

@JTaylor – This is in reference to one of your posts waaaaaaay up in the tree. You mentioned that people don’t get all up in arms when owners dump players and screw over their team/fan-base. I wholeheartedly disagree. As a Knick fan, you put me in a room with Dolan and things won’t be very nice for him. Many fans feel the same way. I read your comment many severals of minutes ago, so my rebuttal might not even be accurate. Stupid work made my brain-box malfunction.

  • http://www.utahjazz.com ScottyB

I love the fact Bron went to Miami, most people don’t. So he has received a lot of hate. The season hasn’t even started yet. He still had a chance at redemption. Than Bam! He says race is sometimes a factor. Well, sometimes race is a factor, there must be racist NBA fans out there right? But now twice as many people will hate him for this alone.

  • JTaylor21

@Mike, NYK fans are the most passionate and BEST in the NBA so I believe you but would you burn down his house like someone stated a few hours ago fans did to RMiller’s crib without knowing whether someone was in there or not? @NBK, yes they do offer it to people who passed US history and World history. By the way, how do you know what’s going on in the college I go to unless you possess some kind of jedi-mind infiltration ability because it’s baffling that you seem to know more about me than me self.

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

I seriously doubt a college course on US Presidents would neglect to mention the many blunders and negatives of its subjects. They wouldn’t have enough for a course if they didn’t. Come on now.

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

But, I do agree the Bush administration was pretty bad, but the h@te for Bush himself has become sort of a fad… You definitely have a right to dislike Bush’s administration though, because you witnessed Katrina (being from N.O.). I don’t want to even imagine that.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

    JtTaylor
What part of New Orleans you from and what high school you go to?
I’m grew up and live in the East. Went to 35.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

Just a lot of schooling, so its easy to tell when someone is lying or bending the truth..about their education. i’m just trying to figure out where you got your breadth of knowledge. So your a history major, or a person who has taken extensive (atleast 3) history classes but seems to think all presidents are portrayed as “freedom fighting, church going, good guys?” IDK seems a little far fetched.
