Michael Beasley: Lakers [and Timberwolves] the ‘Teams to Beat’

by Marcel Mutoni / @marcel_mutoni

When the Miami Heat shipped Michael Beasley off to the NBA’s version of Siberia this summer, a lot of people saw it as some sort of death knell for the young forward. Beasley, however, looks at it in a positive light.

B-Easy says he likes the new surroundings, and tells the Minnesota Timberwolves’ official website that his team will not lay down for anyone next season. In fact, they and the Lakers are both contenders.

You try and figure these quotes out
, because I certainly cannot:

Michael Beasley: “I think that speaks to Pat Riley, you know exactly who he is. Pat Riley is a winner, winner, winner, that’s pretty much all it is. They got three of the best guys in the NBA, they got the best role players in the NBA, you know they are trying to win championships and that’s what Pat Riley is all about. It is unfortunate they had to get rid of me but like I said, Pat Riley wins at any cost and that’s exactly what he did.”

Jonah Ballow: “Are they the team to beat? I mean, there is a team in LA with a couple of trophies but are they the team to beat?”

Michael Beasley: “Honestly, and I know a lot of people are not going to like that fact that I’m going to say this but I think we are the team to beat. You know, that’s just me and my ego speaking. I think the Lakers are the defending champs two years in a row, I think the Lakers still hold that title. It’s nice to see somebody try to fight back but as of now, the Lakers are still the team to beat.”

Despite the confidence and ego, Michael Beasley and his new GM, David Kahn, aren’t going to win any NBA titles together in Minnesota. However, they are unbeatable in one very important category: unintentional comedy.

Yo, B-Easy, you forgot to add “by 50″ after you said, “I think we are the team to beat.”

  • http://www.centercourtbasketball.com CCB

Good for him, maybe he is trying to motivate himself. After watching Kevin Love in the World Championships they do have a decent frontline, one that could compete against teams in the West. Their problem will come in the squad being able to gel and get decent guard play. Once J. Flynn comes back though they will have decent guard play. If Darko can finally deliver on his potential (Stop laughing) they have an um, okay squad… Well alright, I can justify this by saying have to seen Gunnin For The Number 1 Spot? K Love and M Beas had pretty good chemistry in the movie and I really do think this will reenergize Beas. At least I hope it will.

    uhm.. yeah.. sure Beas,

  • http://Www.dimemag.com Royal

I really think mike is gonna flurish(as much as someone can flurish on a bad team) with the timberwolves. I mean back when Mike was a Jr. and Kevin Durant was a Sr. in highschool, alot of people in the DMV area thought Mike would turn out a better player

  • ClydeSays

Wow. Adjust his meds. Or not. He might become suicidal once reality sets in…

  • EJ

Yeah, they are deffinitely the team to beat by 50 points.

  • http://www.slamonline.com The Big Fundamental

Geeze, players have been getting more delusional by the day….

  • http://Slamonline.com Caboose

will t- wolves even get 20 wins this season? by contrast, will the lakers even get 20 losses? the answer to both is no.

  • http://Slamonline.com Pippen Ain’t Easy

    he’s definitely smoking marijuana again

  • http://nicekicks.com meloman2.0

Umm whats with the hate? what he’s saying is really unlikely, but he’s a player, do u expect him to doubt himself?

  • Yeah baby…

    Go Wolves!!!

  • http://nbaforum.net Holy Karron

This dude keepz me rollin thanks Mike

  • http://staticseth.blogspot.com Seth

Well, in a way he’s right. Minny is a team to be beat… many times.

  • http://thekobebeef.wordpress.com LDR4

Maybe the Timberwolves should have let Beasley write the full page ad that they took out in the paper that said they would not contend. This team does have the potential to win on any given night especially with how good Kevin Love is. But a title? No banners will be hung in the Target Center this year.

  • dsleepy

    Bryan Crawford ftw

  • http://www.boogiewilliams.com Boing Dynasty

Clever guy, that Bryan Crawford. *golf clap*

  • http://www.slamonline.com/ niQ

Great way to start my day. LOL
But hey guys, maybe M.Beasley will average 30 and 15 as the number 1 option on the team! Not likely, but you never know!

  • Love4Humanity

He must still be high from all that weed he smoked last season. T-Wolves will improve but they’re a 30 win team this coming season.

  • Celtics fan

Beasley I forgot you where traded to them YOU BUM..Al harrington is way better than him and he couldn’t co-exist with kevin love or ball hogging Johnny flynn

  • StopHating

@ Celtics fan yeah ur right Kevin Love couldn’t co-exist with Al Harrington b/c he play for the knicks stupid…how can someone comment on something they dont know what they’re talking about…To all you other haters..why dont all yall just wake up in the morning and say to yourself “I suck at Life” b/c basically thats why ur asking him to do…He suppose to think he’s the man and his team is the team to beat…”You play to win the game”…dumbies!!! And one more thing Good job writing this article you piece of trash, you know what he meant…or are you really that stupid!!!!

  • http://twitter.com/HarryByrdMan44 LA Huey

    You’re super cool, Beas.

  • http://kb24.com jbn74sb

Beasley needs to pass some of that bubba kush over this way.

  • TrailBlazing&SportingLisbon

they are the team to beat cause theyre the team EVERYONES GONNA BEAT UP

  • TrailBlazing&SportingLisbon

    hes a joker

  • Nigel

God, I hate the fact that he’s one of the best players from the DC area. At least we got KD.

  • IAMORANGE4EVER

Beasley balls just dropped. He wants to lead.

  • flash

don’t sleep on him. dudes got potential. no kidding

  • http://slamonline.com The Black Rick Kamla

….I thought Kahn was getting this young man off the herbs

  • All Day

B-Easy, “Timberwolves” and “Lakers” should never be used in the same paragraph. “Timberwolves” and “Nets” is more appropriate.

  • http://slamonline BossTerry

Who did Minny get outta the Jefferson trade, I forget??

  • http://thacorner.net/forums Kevin

I thought the NBA told him to stop smoking weed

  • http://slamonline BossTerry

Looking at their roster they dont look half bad.. Id like to see some improvment from Corey Brewer this year.. Whose gonna start at the 3? Brewer, Webster, or Beasley (6-10).. I hope they dont move Love to center..

  • http://www.bulls.com Enigmatic

First thing I thought of when I heard he was traded to the Timberwolves was back when they had an NBA draft special before he got drafted. Dude was on the phone with one of his boys talking about where he might end up, and he pretty much trashed Minnesota and said anywhere but there. I guess this is poetic justice.

  • http://slamonline BossTerry

I think its possible for them to sneak into the 8th seed… pretty good mixture of youth and experience..

  • http://nbacheapseats.blogspot.com Chendaddy

It’s like when Slam asked Amar’e a few years ago how many games he thought the Suns would win that year. Amar’e came back and said, if you’re a professional basketball player, you have to say 82-0. What else would you say? Are you going to look at your calendar and say, “Okay, we’re gonna lose that game, and this one, and that one.” That’s what a true competitor does. Whether or not it’s realistic, you say stuff like “We’re the team to beat” and “Kevin Love, Darko, and I are going to be one of the best frontcourts in the league” and “Ricky Rubio, that kid is definitely coming over soon.”

  • Love4Humanity

Flynn, Johnson, Brewer, Beasley, Love. Solid young team. But too young. I don’t see why in the world they signed Darko to an extension. Not a smart move.

  • http://slamonline BossTerry

Im not holding my breath for Rubio… they have Flynn, Telfair, and Ridnoir.. Dunno if Wolves fans would even cheer for him at this point…

  • Robb

he meant the TWolves are fun to beat

  • guyfromportugal

what if the wolves get to the finals

  • truth tella

The people who comment on this shit are some of the most unoriginal and stupid ever. hpw many corny weed and team to beat up jokes are going to be said until someone realizes that the person two comments up…all the way up… said the same thing.

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

    LOL @ underdog!

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

Michael Beasley: “Honestly, and I know a lot of people are not going to like that fact that I’m going to say this but I think we are the team to beat.”…. “It’s nice to see somebody try to fight back but as of now, the Lakers are still the team to beat.”

That should have been the whole article

  • BC 33

Michael needs to stop talking he is speaking out of turn. Mike you’ll put a gun to your head before you guys are contenders.

  • Ali Saadat

No Beas, you got it wrong, the Wolves are the team are the team that WILL BE BEAT.

  • Jordan

Damn, that’s not a good look. I mean he has been an average player in the league since he arrived and he has the stones to make a statement like this? This is just going to blow up in his face big time.

  • http://lakers.com stu

AHA can someone please make another play-on-words joke about what he “meant to say” AHAAA the genius of it all. really. dane cook funny.

i say good for him, how quickly you all forget how dope he was in college and the skill set he possesses. how about you give him the benefit of the doubt that they’re not the comments of a hallucinating pot head, but possibly the words of a leader.
again, good for him, i hope this is the rebirth. forum warriors, effin’ haters.

  • ab40

Let’s do this minny it’s time for the fans in minnesota to have something to root for again. I’m hoping beasley can deliver. But I guess that he’s gonna play the 3 with brewer at the two and flynn at the one with darko as the starting c and k love as the 4 man. That’s a decent lineup with a lot of height except for lil johny. I’m definetly expecting some great storylines out of minnesota this year

  • Jacob (from Australia)

Confidence is the key. And I bet he’s gonna win more games and cash more money than us so of course the hate’s gonna roll in.

  • http://www.kb24.com The Seed

Timberwolves are the team to beat on NBA 2K11, I like his confidence, but they have a long road up hill to being successful challenging the Lakers. BOOK IT!!

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

WTF? I meant *LOL @ chiqo. Sry underdog, but it’s a little weird for me to laugh at you laughing at him.

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

    Also, lulz @ LA Huey.

  • http://SLAMONLINE.COM LAKERSLEGACY

HOW STONED MUST OF B EASY BEEN WHEN HE SAID ALL THAT!

  • JD

Beasley will win MIP this year

  • http://www.google.com MeloRush

People gotta give this guy a break!
Hes young. averages of 15-6, which aren’t pathetic. Decent numbers.
More is expected of him. what if Minnesota acts as base for him to develop his game and become the next big thing, i mean the 26-10 guy!
Hes got skills and potential to be better than Melo or Durant. All he needs to do is keep his Head in place and concentrate on his job. Maturity will come on its own!
Who would like to kiss millions of dollars goodbye?
    B-EASY wont!
Look for him to start and just become the primary option!
Maybe after his Rookie deal gets over he can sign somewhere else!

  • http://www.twitter.com/hurstysyd Hursty

LMAO @ Chendaddy’s dig at Rubio. Co-sign him 100% though.

  • IAMORANGE4EVER

    *exhales* Love this thread. lol

  • Klemperer

Maybe he meant the Minneapolis Lakers.

  • hammer

2 beas: Like ray liotta n goodfellas says “You really r a funny guy!”

  • http://www.google.com/news BETCATS

I think Micheal has stop smoking weed and is now literally smoking trees. Excess smoke inhalation is the only way i can explain anybody thinking the Timberwolves are the team to beat.

  • http://www.youtube.com/tripledouble Triple Double

You unoriginal chumps… weed joke here, weed joke there… Do y’all laugh at your own jokes once you press refresh and feel the most fame you’ll ever experience by seeing your nickname on a blog… You are laaaaaaame.

Go Beas, kill ‘em this season.

  • BK Chris

This isn’t a story, slow news day I suppose. In all my years watching professional sports, I have yet to hear a player say “Honestly we have a snowball’s chance in hell of seriously competeing this year”, especially before training camp starts. In this overly sensitive world we live in,these athlethes are coached on how to conduct themselves while dealing with the media. Thats why most athletes ( not named Ron Artest) sound so mechanical during post game interviews. I honestly would be more shocked if he said “Kahn already told u what the deal is, I’m just here to get my check”

  • Johnboy

B-ease even if you added the number of wins you’ll get in the next two years, you still won’t get to 50. PEACE playoff contendaa

  • hammer

There is a diff between saying we have high hopes 4 the season and saying we the team 2 beat. And a diff between being confidant, and just sounding like a loony. Cuz,REALISTICALLY speaking, there r a # of teams that can b considered the team 2 beat. I know it and EVERY1 here knows it. And if we all know it,then beas should b smart enuff 2 know it as well

  • Yesse

Looks like he has been doing that drinking and those drugs again..

  • jdstorm

For All the Crap everyone is giving Beasly about this. Anybody with a bit of pride is going to say that they are out to win.

Man i wish MB had gone to pheonix in the amare trade exception. would have been a good fit

  • hammer

@ jd. Yeah. Out 2 win. Agreed. But not as beas said team 2 beat. 2 very diff thngs. Don’t get it twisted

  • http://twitter.com/max_in_missouri Max in Missouri

It should be noted that Beasley also said that his goal was to not only win ROY, but also MVP during his rookie campaign.

I guess this pretty much proves he’s still tokin’ up, too

  • Daio

… Well. I think Beasley has great potential, especially after coming out of Dwyane Wade’s very big shadow. The thing is, he doesn’t feel the game. Dude has like this blank expression whenever I watched him play in Miami. Not the cool of D-Wade, or the rockslide intensity of Lebron, just… it’s blank.

    Iúnno if that’s a good thing. :P

  • wottywo

I think Beasley might be talking in his sleep, I mean that sounds a like a happy dream. But what’s going to happen when he wakes up and lives the nightmare?

  • http://Slam Ruach Tang

maybe in about five years mike beasley!!

  • Jeremiah

Kahn already showing Beasley the ropes.
