Breaking: Hornets Acquire Jerryd Bayless

Jerryd Bayless, a former first-round pick, was dealt to the New Orleans Hornets for their 2011 first-round pick. Why did this happen now? We’d guess it’s because Portland needed the roster spot to sign Fabrico Oberto (with all of theirs, aside from Marcus Camby, on the mend), and NOLA needs a backup guard after dealing Darren Collison a few months back.

Bayless has been a bit of a disappointment in Portland (with career averages of 6.8 ppg and 2 apg since entering the League in 2008), so the 6-3 guard can’t be mad at the change of scenery.

Who’s going to back up Andre Miller now? This was supposed to be a breakout season for him. I guess he will be taking over when Chris Paul leaves New Orleans.

  • KING

    He is a good player
Nate mcmillan just a bad coach

  • Ev

Some combo of Wes Matthews and Broy probably backup PG. Armon Johnson might get a few minutes. Patty Mills will get a roster spot now (along with Oberto…Pendergraph to be waived).

  • rob stewart

Bayless is a baller. Given a chance he can put up big numbers. Watch out for him. great pick-up

  • The Philosopher

    This is his chance.

  • iheartcoffee

This makes the Collison – Ariza trade look a lot better now.

  • http://bugmarley.com LeoneL

    Yes!!!!

  • rich

whoooooooah YES, all they need is a seven footer and its a wrap

  • TrailBlazing&SportingLisbon

Portland guards; Andre Miller, Armon Johnson, Elliot Williams, Rudy Fernandez, Wes Matthews, Brandon Roy…thats 6 players for 2 positions…it was a big logjam, something had to give, for a first rounder, maybe lottery?! I´ll take it…good luck J-Bay, nice scoring guard but not a shooter to play the 2 and not a passer to play the 1, also suited for up tempo style in witch the Blazers dont play.

  • http://slamonline BossTerry

Man, Bayless was well liked in Portland regardless of his numbers.. Shoulda handed them Patty Mills instead..

  • TrailBlazing&SportingLisbon

also, Bayless as a PG its not close to Collison

Happy to see J Bay getting more of an opportunity now. Portland had Roy and Dre who were going to handle the ball the most. Now Jerryd will be the backup to CP3. Unbelievable talent. One of the most athetlically gifted guards in the league. He’s probably top in the top 3 most athletic PGs in the league. DRose RWestbrook and JBay. He’s a great shooter, scorer and one of the fastest guards in the league. Just great speed in the open floor. He’s strong, athletic, quick and can play solid d. Good trade and congrats to my boy JBay.

  • http://slamonline.com mike

Play him next to paul or is this a sign that paul is on his way out?

  • http://michael.warren@students.sowela.edu JusFly

When I heard New Orleans get Curtis Jerrells, I thought they got a smaller poor man’s Jerryd Bayless. Their games are similar but Jerryd is taller and more talented. Now they got the real thing in Jerryd Bayless. He’s going to prove that he is one of the most talented young point guards in the league. Coming out of the draft, I saw him, D.Rose, R.Westbrook and J.Flynn as the top young pgs to come into the league. He didn’t play much until last year and played very well. Now he’ll get his first real opportunity to play behind CP3. He can also played the 2 and could form a nice backcourt.

Nice pickup with JBayless. Awesome talent, potential and upside. Freak athlete and super quick. Could be a Gilbert Arenas with freak athleticism.

  • http://slamonline BossTerry

I dont like to see him go, but I think New Orleans is a great place for him.. Reunited with Monty Williams, from what I understand, they have a great relationship..

  • David -aussie in Canada

so ship bayless when its fernandez that wants to leave portland?? wtf??

  • http://slamonline.com Slick Ric

@ david, I totally agree. It was a bad trade for both teams in my opinion, because I believe he was a better fit next to Brandon Roy even though he not a pure point, Roy handles those responsibilities anyway, and the hornets should of tried to get him for nothing more than a second round pick.

  • http://itsahardwoodlife.blogspot.com omphalos

Michael Warren; if we are talking athleticism you have to add John Wall to that list, he’s an athletic beast, probably moreso than Bayless.

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

Bayless can actually play, he’ll be a great addition to New Orleans.

  • Hammer

F**K NO!!! WHAT THE HELL IS PORTLAND DOIN! Get rid of rudy. Or even dre cuz u know that there gonna get rid of him regardless. NOT BAYLESS!! Had high expectations 4 him as a blazer, not a hornet. 1st blake, then outlaw, then martell and now bayless. Not 2 mention the shameless, classless way we let go of pritchard. Who the f**k is next!? We used 2 b what the thunder is now. Now we r a team full of questions, doubt and injuries. What the f**k!!

  • dma

What is wrong with New Orleans? Look at their guards: Paul, Thorton, Willie Green, Jerrells, Belinelli and now Bayless. All these guys need their minutes.

  • Hammer

@king. A “bad coach” doesn’t lead a injury plagued team 2 a 50 win season and playoffs n the f****n loaded western conference! Ignorant @ss statement

  • http://nationofmillions.ca ciolkstar

What happens to Marcus Thornton now? Bayless and Thornton are two different versions of the same player. Both are “Combo” guards in the sense that they can score like legitimate SGs but can’t play point or guard true SGs… Thornton is a dead eye shooter, and Bayless is the Monta without the pull up J. And then there’s Bellinelli… what a mess.

  • rc

Armon Johnson gets the minutes. Totally outplayed Bayless in preseason!

  • http://www.twitter.com/TheDiesel Anton

^What happens to Marcus Thorton now, really? That’s a legitimate concern? I’m guessing he’ll deal with it like he deals with anything in life – shoot his way into feeling better.
The Blazers are coming apart at the seams like Oden’s knees.

  • TrailBlazing&SportingLisbon

@kavon, you dumb or just blind? a more athletic gilbert arenas?! agent 0 at his best his a GREAT SHOOTER, thats the thing Bayless CANT DO, NOR DID HE SHOW ANY SIGNS HE CAN RUN A TEAM as a PG…STFU ANTON, a fringe rotation player leaving means sh1t, and A FIRST ROUNDER (possibly LOTERY) will be just fine…and Thornton will shoot his way out of it, lol, that was a funny coment

  • http://www.need4sheed.com Tarzan Cooper

portland continues to sink. im betting they waste the draft pick on an oft injured 7 footer. nawlins is now deep. i hope willie green likes riding the bench.

  • http://slamonline.com The Black Rick Kamla

    …..Jerryd Bayless…rather have Jannero Pargo..

  • aimlessgun

The people who think this trade is bad for Portland clearly don’t follow the Blazers.

  • BRAVO

    PARGO CAN SHOOT 3S!

  • Michael

Bayless has a nice game. I was heated when the Pacers traded him on draft night. Hopefully he will put in work in NO.

  • http://www.twitter.com/hurstySYD Hursty

Um, Bayless is not a point guard folks. Chris Paul will still play 40 mpg at the 1

  • don

bayless should get some playing time now.

  • tavoris

@ciolkstar-Marcus Thornton is fine. The starting 2 (or 30 min as the 6th man) HAVE to go to him, because none of those other dudes are nearly as good as he is.

  • http://slamonline.com LAKERSLEGEND

I like young bayless’s game but Ariza and Bayless to keep Paul happy? too little too late? i mean ariza and bayless both have good parts to there game i just cant see theyre squad making a run in the playoffs….

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

Marcus Thornton will be the starting shooting guard for the Hornets. He’s too good to have his place taken by Bayless. Bayless can backup 1 and 2 quite nicely though.

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

    In other words, co-sign tavoris.

  • His Airness

More room for Pat Mills. This guy is gonna be a problem.

  • CannibalREX

Thumbs up for my man Patty Mills, who will finally get a chance to shine… J-bay is too similar to Roy (apart from 3pts) to play alongside with him … and he’s not a pg, he’s ashort 2

  • ab40

good for new orleans and bayless and even better for portland. that draft pick is going to be another trade chip. Portland is going to be a tough out for a lot of teams and they’re the only team in the west who can match LA size wise when both healthy because oden and bynum both need to play

  • tavoris

The Hornets are slowly, but surely stockpiling young talent. They better hurry the hell up tho

  • AjfromNewZealand

@CannibalREX & His Airness , You guys got that right. Main man Patty Mills should see some court time. Telling everyone, hes silent but violent !
