Magic Johnson Interested in Owning the Pistons?
Earvin doesn’t like what he sees in Motown right now (who does?), but he says that if he were in charge, things would change. From the Free Press: “Will I own a team in the NBA? Probably so,’ Johnson said. ‘I don’t have to be the majority owner, and I probably won’t be, but I still want to control it.’ Johnson, 51, is aware of the ownership limbo with the Pistons. He said he assumed Mike Ilitch would be the next owner and spoke with him months ago. He wouldn’t rule out becoming a minority owner in Detroit. As for the current Pistons, Johnson said they were a long way from the teams he faced in consecutive NBA Finals in the late 1980s. ‘Too many individuals,’ Johnson said. ‘You have to get back to what made them great, and that’s defense and rebounding … What we see now is a team that’s soft. People from Detroit and Michigan can accept losing, but not the way they’re losing … I’m still the point guard, nothing’s changed,’ he said. ‘I’m one of the most focused, disciplined guys you’re ever going to meet. So, if we say the Pistons, and something happens, you’re going to see a focused Magic Johnson. And you know, if I come home, I can’t fail at home.’”
