Carmelo Anthony Nervous About Trade Situation?

by Marcel Mutoni@marcel_mutoni

With the trade deadline now less than a month away, and New Jersey supposedly no longer in play for his services, Carmelo Anthony‘s options have become quite limited.

And he’s understandably growing ever anxious about what the future holds for him.

As the saga drags on in Denver, Anthony says communication with the Nuggets’ front-office has become limited, and he has no clue where he’ll end up.

For Carmelo, it’s important to not only land in a place he likes (New York), because if he doesn’t, he may get “screwed” out of a lucrative $65 million extension.

The Denver Post reports:

I caught up with Carmelo Anthony, and for the first time, I really felt a sense of uncertainty from the guy. Asked where he thought he’d be traded, the Nuggets all-star said, “At this point, I really don’t know. New Jersey took that deal off the table. In order for me to consider them, I’d have to agree to the meeting. Now, it’s washed under the table.” I Asked: Are the options strictly New Jersey, New York, Chicago, Denver? Melo said, “Yeah. But I really can’t say it’s just those, because I don’t really know (what could happen).”

This, of course, is in reference to the reality that Denver could trade Melo to a team he doesn’t want to play for long-term. If that happens, then he might not sign the three-year, $65 million contract extension to play for that team. Instead, he’d opt out of his current contract and be a free agent this summer, likely signing with the Knicks. But – he would take a significant pay cut, due to the new collective bargaining agreement. I asked, “If they trade you somewhere, and you don’t sign the extension, you’re screwed …” But then, before he could answer, I justified by saying, “Well, not necessarily screwed…” But, Melo flashed a smile and said: “Screwed.”

For what it’s worth, the Nuggets are reportedly now warming up to the idea of working on a deal with the Knicks.

New York, though, seems more than happy to wait for Anthony to eventually hit the free agency market this summer.

No Mr. Anthony. You will not be “screwed” out of anything. You have choices to make and by not signing the extension with Denver you are CHOOSING

  • MUBWAR

New York is doing the smart thing while Melo is apparently not interested in money.

  • http://gmail dirty frank

to gamble on that money. It is YOUR CHOICE.

  • ripslam

Just stop. I don’t care about this guy anymore.

  • Fat Lever

Just trade him to Cleveland already.

cosign ripslam. And I hope he doesn’t get that $65 million extension.

He has choices to make, money versus location/team may be difficult decision. Either way it’s not like he will be broke, but in all honesty if he want to live in the city of his choice AND have the best shot at winning, then ‘sacraficing’ the extra money and just going to NYC (or wherever else) where they don’t have to give up any assets or draft picks is his best option.

I just don’t understand why he wants to go to New York so badly. Sure it’s home, but did he take a glance at their roster? Planning to score 100+ with Amar’e in losses? If the money truly doesn’t matter, he should be pushing for Orlando or a contender for a chance to win. No-nonsense PG + Howard + Melo’s scoring is a much better formula for a ring than chucking ’till the game’s over and looking at the score to see if you’ve won.

Melo is handling this the wrong way. He should have really never mentioned the whole ‘time for a change’ thing if he wasn’t prepared to deal with the reality of making a change. The team is winning, he’s playing well, he should ride things out for this year and then make his decision upon free agency. That way if he is to join NYK or some other roster, there is time to plan around that team for future success, rather than scrambling parts around and hoping for the best.

I don’t know why, but Carmelo’s situation doesn’t rub me the wrong way. Maybe because he wants to go back home?

He made this situation what it is, now he has to live with it. Carmelo usually pouts in games when things don’t go his way so I don’t expect much different when it comes to trade negotiations.

  • http://www.redraidersports.com Nicolas Fleming

Name one great NBA player who didn’t “pout” when things were not going his way. Tim Duncan, Kobe, MJ, Magic, Larry…I saw all of them do it. That or define pout…

Oh no, what will you do with 50 million dollars and not 65 million? Latrell Sprewell got ‘screwed’ too I guess.

Should have never signed the one year extension! If this was going on at the same time as the LeBron fiasco we wouldn’t be talking about this!

Looking at it from another angle:
    _____
The Knicks are real crafty – If they don’t put a decent enough offer on the table and ‘only’ sign ‘Melo as a free agent THEY get out of having to pay a 65 MILLION dollar extension!!! AND still get the player they’ve ‘coveted’ all this time…

Fleming, the duncanbot is incapable of pouting. When has he ever done that? Quit making things up. ……….. …….. …… Aside from being home, idk why melo wants ny so bad.

  • http://www.redraidersports.com Nicolas Fleming

Coop…Come on folk. You have seen TD21 after he doesn’t get a call, he does the same thing Kobe does, but at a more frequent rate. I guess I’m not sure what was meant by pout. Because I wouldn’t call any of those guys pouters. I think pouting would be Big Baby on the bench after KG ripped him.

I think thay should send Carmelo to New York becuase thats were he want’s to play and stop all of this Carmelo rumors already, trust me Carmelo and Amar’e will make a good team together. With Carmelo at SF,Amar’e at PF,Ferton at PG,and Landry or dougles at SG the Knicks are going to be a very good team, ahhh I almost for got the Knicks should start looking for a center some were esle not in the N.B.A.but there are good players in other countrys and one good player that would fit perfetly in a Knicks uniforn is Peter John Ramos thats the tipe of player the Knicks need a player that plays defends offence and has the ability to stop other players off scoring lots of points under the basket.Thats what the Knicks should do.Thats what i thing is best for them.Thank you and bye.

I don’t understand why people are upset with Carmelo. At least he isn’t doing what Lebron and Bosh did.

He wanted out. He said trade me so that you don’t end up with nothing. He did Denver a favor. I don’t know what else people expect him to do. It’s not his fault if the Nuggets refuse to accept offers from NJ, which seem to be amazing, considering; or, a very reasonable trade from the Knicks (especially considering they have no leverage).

If Melo didn’t want to go to the Nets, then they should have just asked him whether he would sign the extension with them… it’s not that hard.

No instead, they try to play a hand they don’t have, and act surprised when teams walk away from the BS….

None of that is Melo’s fault, though. I would rather trade him for a 1st round, Wilson Chandler, Landry Fields, and Curry’s expiring contract than get nothing in return.

Landry Fields (second best rookie in the NBA), Chandler, and 1st rounder seem like a good way to build towards the future.

    Better than Favors, Troy Murphy…

It appears he has lived long enough to be a villain…

  • http://www.stonesthrow.com Michael NZ

LOL @ ‘He did Denver a favor’.

  • tavoris

@Nicholas Fleming-Joe Dumars, Grant Hill, Dirk, Yao…I don’t recall seeing any of those players pout. U have a valid point tho, cuz that still leaves about 99.999% of the league over the last 2 decades.

  • http://slamonline.com Yknot

I know I’m redundant but I thought home was Baltimore?

  • MusketeerX

@Mike — What should he have done???? Not tell Denver why he wasn’t signing the extension right away? Not give them a heads up that they should pursue other offers?

What he did sure beats the hell out of dragging Denver along for 6 months and then two weeks before the trade break saying: “Oh… yeah, you should probably trade me, because I’m not coming back next year.”

He gave them 6 months to find the proper trade pieces and Denver balked every step of the way…. not Melo’s fault.

People like to blame Melo, but he did everything right in this situation.

If you have a better way to handle this, then I’m all ears.

He doesn’t want to be there anymore. It’s his choice — and no one has the right to blame him for wanting to play where he wants to play.

  • http://twitter.com/exqomaniarules eXqoManiaRules

MusketeerX (Cool Name by the way) It’s not just the Knicks fan in me that believes that people are reaching for a reason to hate Melo… he’s been very gracious in his entire treatment of this situation. People are basically saying, he should be a slave and play where he doesnt want to play. NY is going to be one of the best teams in the East in a few years, if not them then who? They are a few pieces away from being a very good team…

  • Justin

Nicolas, there’s a huge difference in pouting because one didn’t get a call and pouting because things weren’t going their way as far as the team and wins and losses are concerned.

  • http://www.triplejunearthed.com/dacre Dacre

I think Nicolas thinks of the word ‘pout’ and thinks of “girly lips”….

  • ab40

I don’t get it. Denver has some pieces just try to trade some or stay there. I might go to the nuggets 76ers game next sunday I’m prety curious how they play

  • TW Carl

    Tough Nuggets, Carmelo.

  • MusketeerX

eXqoManiaRules — Thanks buddy. I agree with you. I think people are just upset that things are changing.

Tarzan, Timmy complains/glares after no calls, or calls on him, more than anyone in the L. Constantly, even if he did foul.
