Player Revolt? Five Piston Vets Skip Shootaround

If you can’t be traded, can you get your coach fired? From The Detroit News: “A day after the trade deadline passed, half the Pistons players missed Friday morning’s shootaround in what a team source called a “player protest.” Tracy McGrady, Tayshaun Prince, Richard Hamilton and Chris Wilcox did not show up to Friday’s morning shootaround. Ben Wallace also wasn’t present, but has been dealing with an ongoing family matter for the past several weeks. Advertisement Austin Daye and Rodney Stuckey showed up as shootaround ended, after the media was let in. They missed the team bus from the hotel to shootaround.”

    Dumars…look at what you’ve done.

  • http://google c_cantrell

whats the point in going to the shoot around? not like it will do any good.. i would be doing the same thing.. players are taking control of their careers in ways no players ever have

“Advertisment Austin Daye” – the forgotten Piston.

dumars gotta keep the coach and fine the f*ck out of the players. this is getting ridiculous. this guy is like their 4th coach in the last 3 yrs. at some point it ain’t that the coach can’t coach is that the players don’t wanna be coached. if a player is late for practice or shoot around or anything fine em. if they don’t practice hard, fine them. if they ignore the coaches play calling fine them. if they turn the ball other fine them. bad shot fine them.

  • eazy

cool 5 washed up players missed shootaround who cares

    Classy move by the players.

  • http://google c_cantrell

the problem is the players want the hell outta detroit

This falls down to management. If they have no control of their players what can a poor coach do. If the so called leaders in your team and acting like little puss1es fine them or trade them

  • Overtime

lol this is brilliant. I like that T-Mac was involved even though he’s the new guy

    oh geez…

  • http://www.triplejunearthed.com/dacre Dacre

T-Mac is getting more court time than he deserves, I find it funny that he would help instigate this….now Rip I can understand but why train if your not getting court time….ever.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Wayno

Yeah, I was most suprised to see T-mac as one of the guys involved in this…seems like he’d want to keep his nose clean this season so he can get a contract somewhere else next year.

  • KSupreme

Everything the pistons touch turns to sh*t…coaching…dumars…it all started with the iverson/billups trade…

@c_cantrell – The players are welcome to make the decision to leave when they become free agents. At that point, they can take their talents to whichever team will have them. The problem is that no other teams want them, as evidenced by the Pistons’ lack of activity at the trade deadline. Teams are very aware that Tayshuan and Rip want out, but nobody made any offers for them. If offers were made, they were lowball offers of garbage players and 2nd round picks. That’s what the Pistons’ entire roster is worth nowadays. Next to nothing. I feel sorry for Prince and Rip, but they’re going to rot there unless they agree to major salary reductions in buyouts.

  • BostonBaller

If you’re under contract you should practice and play hard, no excuses. You get paid good money to play a kids game so the least you can do is show up. I don’t care how bad you think the team, the mgmt or the coach is, you do your job to the best of your ability. If I were a GM somewhere and saw players doing that, I’d never sign them b/c how would I know that they wouldn’t do the same to my team. Millionaires should not shoot themselves in the wallet, they have agents for that…

  • SMIK

Co-Sign BostonBaller & Chuckaz. i was rooting for T-Mac to get his crap together but now he just shot himself in the foot. Didnt he learn anything at all this season, hes career was (is) finished and the pistons were the only one willing to give him a shot. Ungrateful, Unprofessional player and the sole reason the Bulls Backed out in signing him, they knew he was trouble and Doc would have advised Thibodeau to stay clear.

Dacre: 9pts 3.5 rebs 3.5 asst in 23 mins a night is not some one who is getting to much burn…

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

If anything, T-Mac deserves MORE playing time. But really, so does every single one of their wing players. Which is why Joe Dumars shouldn’t have signed a bazillion of them. No offense to Joe, but it’s more his fault than Kuester’s–whatever it is that’s going on.

Larry Brown seems awfully available right now. Just saying.

Bad move by McGrady, this could hurt his rep around the league and make it hard for him to find a new home next season.

  • http://slamonline BossTerry

This wouldn’t be tolerated just a couple years ago.. Anyone else remember when the Nets and Mavs pretty much traded teams?? I remember Sam Cassell and Shawn Bradley were in that trade, along with a bunch of other guys…

  • allenp

    “Revolt” implies bondage or subservience.

  • http://bugmarley.com/ LeoneL

Early What’s My Name entry for Daye? Austin Advert Daye. AD for his initials and “Vert” for his vertical.

“Practice???? This is not a game, this is Practice????” –Rip Hamilton quoting AI

  • Gil2chill

That’s when management has to step in and restore order.

But management’s giving BS excuses for players not showing up at practice.

Joe Dumars gotta step in and fire players.

    Ship players out today !
Buy Rip, Tayshaun and two other guys out today !

Nobody wants to trade for any of them anyway.

  • Thegfunk

It really is the year for protest

  • el_larsen

    cosign chukaz and bostonballer!!
    no excuses!!
a chance to give ben gordon and bynum minutes!
why give gordon such contract to just play him 20 mn?
gotta move from rip and tayshaun cos apparently they have.and TRADE STUCKEY

  • http://slamonline.com Ugh

It doesn’t matter what you get paid or what your job is – you have a right to industrial action. What else should they do when their coach is this much of a douche, their GM hasn’t made a standout decision in eight years and the ownership have no idea what’s going on?

  • allenp

I like the way “ugh” there thinks. Unfortunatley most people think that making a lot money removes.you from.the human race. Well only of you are an athelete.

  • el_larsen

well maybe playing well and show some defense would be a great start

  • MikeC.

@Ugh – and the Pistons organization has a right to fine, suspend and take other actions against the players for not fulfilling the terms of their contracts. It doesn’t say anywhere in player contracts that the Pistons organization is obligated to make smart personnel decisions or hire competent coaches. If they want to throw gobs of money at guys with mediocre talent, hire “douche” coaches and have a bad team, then that’s their decision. The players have guaranteed contracts that have terms that must be fulfilled. If they choose to violate the terms of the contract, then that’s their decision to make, along with the consequences that follow.
