Report: Lakers, Nuggets Discussing Carmelo Anthony Deal

The talks, according to ESPN‘s sources, are in their infancy. But they’ve reportedly begun to take place: “The Lakers’ package would be built around center Andrew Bynum. Denver has no interest in Ron Artest and isn’t particularly interested in Lamar Odom either, sources said. A straight-up deal of Bynum for Anthony works financially, but there could be other players involved since Denver would look to shed more salary if possible. Sources described the talks as in their infancy, and a three-way deal between the Knicks, Nuggets and Wolves is very much alive.”

OMG that would be a dream come true! Lakers 4 Life!

  • http://slamonline.com kap

I’ll take the Big Three of Kobe, Melo, and Gasol over the one in Miami easily.

  • http://slamonline.com kap

Thats stupid. Bynum is MUCH better then Melo.

  • http://slamonline.com kap

I’m kinda pissed that this leaked which makes the chances of it happening a lot less likely now.

  • http://slamonline.com kap

If LA offers Odom/Bynum for Melo then there is no way Denver can turn that down. Much better than getting Brewer, Chandler, and a lottery protected draft pick.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Eboy

So the Lakers would lose a defensive anchor for a guy that plays no D. Offenisvley, they’d have to go through the same growing pains the Heat did for about 40 games having Melo learn how to share the ball without another Alpha option (and let’s face it, Melo and Bean don’t look to pass like Bron does) AND learn the triangle. Please let this happen. The end will REALLY be near.

  • http://nobulljive.com/ Enigmatic

But will Melo sign an extension in LA?

  • Bruno

eboy is kind of right but kap damn bynum much better than melo??? hell no

  • http://slamonline.com Kap

Thats not me that posted that…

  • http://www.slamonline.com Eboy

Although, if this happens, my viewing experience when the Lakers come to Miami is going to be off the f*cking charts.

  • http://slamonline.com Kap

@Bruno…I would never post anything that stupid

  • JTaylor21

Sounds like Kap is having an erocktion.

  • http://slamonline.com Kap

Trust me…If Carmelo comes to LA he’s gonna play defense because he’s gonna have a different mindset.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Eboy

I wouldn’t put it past the Lakers to score 110 points a game. I also wouldn’t put it past them to give up 110 either. This would be a great move for the future though. Might just make Phil stick around too. But they would have to get some defensive presence in the middle. Losing Bynum would end all that talk.

  • http://Www.slamonline.com Royal

As a laker fan, I would not want to give up LO and Bynum for Melo

  • Overtime

    No no no no.
    No.

  • Red Star

Talk to your boy Kobe! Talk to your boy!!

  • http://slamonline.com Kap

The defense wasn’t too bad when Bynum was out the first seven weeks of the season. You also forget the fact they will still have Artest and Kobe and Barnes on the wings playing defense and Gasol is a good shot blocker. So the defense will suffer but they won’t be looking like the Phoenix Suns either on defense.

  • http://www.slamonline.com/ niQ

LAKERS!?!?! Wow. It looks too good to be true. But I have this weird feeling they will gravely miss Bynum’s presence down low… (I guess Eboy alreay said all I had to say).

  • http://www.slamonline.com Eboy

Kap, you think after 7 1/2 seasons dude is just going to become the next Scottie Pippen, just because? You need to have that in your makeup. Melo has NEVER shown that. Ever. Their best overall perimeter defender would be Matt Barnes.

  • http://slamonline.com Kap

Getting Melo will extend Kobes career and make life a lot much easier on the court for him. It also extends their championship window. So the pros outweigh the cons. Worst case scenario is they don’t win a ‘ship this year and have to add some defensive bigs in the offseason.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Eboy

Kap, realistically, you can’t be serious. Ron’s minutes would almost dissapeer completely. Kobe is good for stretches, but even you know he doesn’t put out that effort on the defensive end from night to night like he used to. If anything, they’d be scrambling to cover Melo and not having Bynum back there to erase is scary…..unless they give up LO too and get Nene.

  • Double J

Best overall perimeter defender will be Kobe Bryant. Do not discredit his on-ball defense. We have three of the best out there, Bryant, Barnes, and Artest

  • http://slamonline.com Kap

Well if the give up Odom then they are definitely gonna have to get Nene and I wouldn’t mind him controlling the paint even though he’s no Bynum but they would still be a great rebounding team with Melo and Nene added to frontline.

  • Stepfan

Melo,Kobe, and Gasol equals not enough shots for everybody. Somebody would not be happy and that somebody would be Melo. I still think Melo is going to Knicks. (I think)

  • http://www.slamonline.com Eboy

Unlike every other jealous fan that downtalked the Heat’s move’s in the summer….I wish them the best if it happens. It would be entertaining to see another prime open-court duo in the league. It would definitely ramp up the anticipation of a Finals between the Heat and the Lakers…because let’s be real….it would be WAY more exciting seeing those two teams in a series than seeing a third Boston/LA matchup. HOWEVA… the Spurs and the Celtics will have a lot to say before it’s all said and done.

  • rob stewart

Losing Bynum and Odom would certainly be a short term blow for LA. But if they were able to get Melo it would be a great long term investment. It would also lengthen Kobe Bryants health and career as well as allow LA to transition from one era to the next

  • kc

    not gonna happen

  • http://www.redraidersports.com Nicolas Fleming

I think Khloe would be huge for the Lakers. She is a beast and could def. clog the middle.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

They wouldn’t give up Odom and Bynum for Melo. they would just give up Bynum and maybe some filler. Giving up both of them would be beyond stupid.
But, I don’t see how Denver makes that trade. Bynum is injury prone. Really injury prone. It looks great on paper to start Bynum and Nene, and have Kenyon and Birdman coming off the bench and then let Kenyon walk at the end of the season, but most likely they would just not have Bynum because of his knees.
L.A. would have growing pains, but the triangle has definite responsibilities for each player, which means everybody has a role. While Melo isn’t a passer, Gasol is a passer, and Kobe can be a passer when motivated. Plus, Melo should be healthy with Gasol for at least another four years, and Kobe can fade away gracefully if he so desires. And stack rings.
The trade would hurt L.A. in the short term, but make their future more secure. It hurts Denver only if Bynum can’t stay healthy, which is quite likely. Interesting trade all around.

  • http://slamonline.com Kap

@Eboy…it creates the perfect matchup across the board btw the 2 best SG, the guy who robbed Melo of ROY, Melo finally being able to escape Bron’s shadow, and the battle of the leagues softest PFs.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

However, they could swing this trade if they wanted to:
Nene, Al Harrington and Melo for Odom, Bynum and Artest.
That trade sucks for Denver, but at least they get something before Melo walks, and they get to remake their team somewhat since what they have isn’t working. Who knows.

  • http://slamonline.com Kap

@Allenp…Bynums not injury prone he was just the casualty of two freak injuries. Brandon Roy and Tmac are what you clarify as injury prone. Both of Bynums injuries were the result of a teammate falling and landing on his now. Its more bad luck than anything.

  • http://www.twitter.com/JoshElam JE

IF this happened, and IF the lakers won the chamionship, it would be one more championship for kobe without the finals mvp.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Jahmai

Are you kidding me? LA vs MIA in the Finals, Kobe, Melo, Pau vs Wade, Bron, Bosh. That would be amazing, the individual matchups would be insane, look at THAT, seriously. Everybody remembers the Melo-Bron battle last year right (both 40 points, melo game winner, lebron triple double.) Wade and Kobe would be awesome, and the skilled soft PF battle Pau vs Bosh. Super sick.

  • http://slamonline.com Kap

@Allenp…Bynum, Odom, Billups, Affalo, Smith, Lawson is still a good group and could still fight for a playoff spot and sets them up for have an exciting young team. Its better than getting Brewer and Wilson Chandler.

  • Riggs

LMAO @ this stupid rumor and LMAO @ some of these comments. bynum better than carmelo, jesus christ.

  • Stepfan

If they make this move will the Lakers have enough money for Dwight Howard? I know LA is one of the teams that he wants to play for once his contract is up. If they get Dwight which I doubt, that team would be stacked. Move Pau back to the pf position and Dwight at 5 with melo at the 3 kobe at the 2 that would be crazy. But this scenario is for 2k11. But I’m not going to lie I wouldnt mind seeing it.

If Melo goes to LA, he’ll get the attention he deserves.

  • http://www.redraidersports.com Nicolas Fleming

    JE: You are dumb.

  • Jackie Moon

Jahmai – Melo doesn’t get enough attention?

  • hambone

unless la physios have worked out bynums knees are a train wreck, this is the only reason for trading that sort of size

  • Jer dawg

Laker love stars and Carmelo will be one. Why not live in sunny, large market than a cold, slightly bigger market. Taxes and real estate both suck.
So, 75degree winter months or a blizzard? I think that’s a no brainer.
I wouldn’t love it, but imagine a fully committed Carmelo. Kobe has exhibited team work in recent years. Never have to tell Carmelo to attack unlike Gasol & Odom. Melo would give another punch offensively. I think Nene would be good replacement for Bynum. Since another big body is a premium and he’s been more healthy than Bynum. Only if nEne is included would I love The deal.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Jahmai

@Jackie Moon (love semi pro btw), but no.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

    KAP
The reason Denver likes the Brewer and Chandler deal is because they shed salary. If they can’t contend, and they won’t contend with any of these lineups, then they’d rather reduce payroll and start over. Makes sense.

  • Righteous

Do it! Bynums good but he has bad knees at a very young age. Melo will b there to take the torch when Kobe retires and i remember Howard sayin he wants to be a Laker, but i dont see how he gets out of his contract with the Magic and if we trade Bynum for Melo, who’s left to trade for Howard next year? But that would be a great tandem for the next Laker era, Melo and D. Howard! Nasty! But none of this matters really cuz LA 3 peat this year baby!

  • Righteous

Melo is the only player we CAN get to take Kobe’s torch! LeBron AND Wade are off limits and Durant is sewn up for the long term. hmmm…Blake Griffin wont be stayin in Clipperland tho! Who else is there?

  • kobesBESTfriend

melo 4 drew?pfffffffft…ship his as$ out of here!!!!(thats what kobe is thinking right now)

  • http://www.slamonline.com peter

For once I agree with Eboy…Kobe and Melo will be a better version of Iverson and Melo…Lakers need rebounding and interior defense, which Bynum provides (when he’s healthy)…not another scoring machine.

  • http://nicekicks.com Meloman2.0

Its gunna hurt me tremendously to have to root for The Lakers…. but this trade is good for both parties, great for melo

  • http://www.twitter.com/JoshElam JE

Atlanta, LA, Denver. Atlanta gets Chauncey Billups and Ron Artest. Lakers get Carmelo Anthony and Mike Bibby. Denver gets Andrew Bynum, Steve Blake and the expiring contract of Jamaal Crawford.

  • dsleepy

as exciting as a move that would be, it would be a mistake, for the many reasons already listed, but i’ll add one more: if you are the Lakers, your window is NOW. why would you hurt your shot at the title NOW for a possible shot at the title LATER? you already have a championship squad, and this is not a video game. chemistry is so important, and removing 1 or 2 of your true pieces just to add a player who will (as stated already) need time to acclimate and learn the system and build new chemistry will really hurt your hopes of three-peating. also, boston reloaded their frontcourt with the o’neals, and perk is coming back. with no bynum LA gets absolutely demolished on the boards. melo and gasol may be decent rebounders, but the combination of boston’s big men is much, much, much, much better. if they bring in melo, but lose bynum, celtics in 5. if they lose bynum AND odom, but get back melo and nene (as previously stated above), celtics in 4. LO is ballin out of his mind this year, lakers cannot and must not give him up.

  • http://Slamonline.com Kap

Shed salary for who? They are not gonna attract any premier free agents. They have Lawson so it would be good to add a big with him that can give u 18+ and 10+ boards.

  • toinefan88

i think the nugs wood get there best deal off the quakers. they have more guns

  • http://dodgers.com Joey E.

you guys saying this would be bad are reading too much into it. i wish the lakers could get JR too

  • Clos1881

Carmelo and Kobe are good friends I’m sure they have talked and I wouldnt be surprised if melo told Kobe he would sign an extension in L.A. He lives their in the offseason and the trade makes sense for both teams.

  • Fat Lever

Anyone think Denver is just putting this out there to make the Knicks come back with a better offer than what they initially did? I don’t think Melo going to LA is a legitimate possibility, in my mind. Melo is an alpha dog player, so was AI. We saw how that worked. The reason why Miami works(now) is because guys have settled into their roles. Lebron is not an alpha, Wade is on that team. And Bosh is smiling, looking out the school bus window enjoying the ride.

  • http://www.slamonline.com/ niQ

@Joey E. Shannon Brown and JR Smith are essentially the same guy. Known for dunks but primary role on team is to chuck 3′s. lol

  • http://Slamonline.com nbk

Highly doubt this even results in an offer

  • http://www.slamonline.com/ niQ

RealGM says this rumor has already been shot down.

  • Joe

Melo now, CP3 and Dwight summer ’12 = Next laker dynasty! No need to hate, who doesn’t want a part of the tradition, celebrity scene, big money, and rings that come with being a laker? This will be the really big 3. BTW hopefully mamba retires inside three years so he can retire a laker.

  • Stepfan
  • http://slamonline.com Bryan Crawford

    Yawn…

  • Joe

BTW all the window is now type posters, this is the Lakers, Dr. Buss has always been ready and willing to break up a very good team to start building another great one. That’s why the lakers never turn into the knicks or celtics and disappear for decades. He has as many rings as he can wear already.

  • Joe

“What’s out there is inaccurate,” is hardly the strongest denial I’ve heard issued to keep players from getting b*tt hurt during talks. An offer hasn’t even been done yet so you have to protect your teams collective ego. Bynum in particular is on shaky ground with the lakers from all the criticism stemming from his handling of offseason surgery (after he went to the world cup), and don’t forget the infamous Kobe “ship his a** out” video. But really, much like Greg Oden, he does need to go for his own sake and the teams.

  • http://dodgers.com Joey E.

@niQ. JR actually hits some 3′s unlike Shannon. Shannon started the season great, since then, ugh

  • bakers’-dozen

This seems to have Stern’s hands all over it. He loves LA and wants a big 3 vs big 3 finals vs Miami…
However, I don’t see it happening. Sure getting Bynum would allow Nene to play PF (his natural position), and would give Denver a lot of depth in the post. However, it does NOT offer Denver the cap flexibility and youth it is seeking in a Melo trade. Bynum’s only good for 35 games a year anyway.

  • 2KInsider

I used to get annoyed at all of these Carmello talks. Not any more!

  • Towelie

Artest needs to away…away very far from Lalaland.

  • sam

If you guys are going to waste your time yapping about sh*t that won’t happen, it might as well involve unicorns and dragons.

  • wan lafon

who ever says bynum is better melo. get off that dope! melo is a top 10 player and bynum starting center…. on the bench.

  • wan lafon

can wait to hear what charles barkley says? IF this happens, will melo be viewed the same as lebron? going to another superstar team or its cool now?

  • fruizm

jr and shannon are not the same player….shannon wishes….

  • Ryan

Noooo way! Bynum is too vital to the Lakers to trade him for Melo. Not saying Bynum is a better player then Melo but he is the defensive anchor of the team and a real offensive threat in the paint. Lakers don’t even need to make a move.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

    Sam FTW

  • http://remrats.com remrats

how bout bynum, barnes, blake and a pick for melo and chauncy? Nuggs get young w bynum and barnes, a good backup for ty lawson. Have artest come off the bench, which will hopefully motivate him to be more of an instant game changer.

  • OnEHigHJeDi

Has anyone seen a Laker game lately? Kobe and the lakers need help scoring. When the Lakers are trailing or their offense is struggling it falls to Kobe to pick up the slack. Then everyone starts Kobe watching. Once in a while Gasol gets involved. Having Melo on the team gives other options on O and takes the wear and tear off Kobe, who is still top 5 but needs all the help he can get to maintain for maybe 2-3 more years. Melo needs to play D, but that will come when he learns the system, plus he’ll be remotivated. Sub in Artest when you need stops for now. Gasol played well against D12 two years ago. He’ll be ok at center.

  • http://slamonline.com Brad Long

There is absolutely no way that this happens…right?

  • http://slamonline.com The Ambassador

What Lakers need to do is get a therapist that can help Artest be a better player. The Lakers dont need Melo because the Lakers already have Kobe to score what the Lakers need to do is trade Brown,Walton,or Blake none of them has stepped up coming from the bench.

    Now Melo and Kobe (hate)
Great… all this means if it were to happen more bangwagon jumpers to LA as if they werent annoying as it is

  • http://slamonline.com Ugh

I think this is a great idea. We can then fold the Nuggets up and put them in the closet and not have to think about them anymore.

  • robb

two scorers who want to shoot the ball almost every possession. Bad idea. Wait till Dwight becomes a free agent.

  • http://sdfklf.com Jukai

Melo for Bynum straight up causes too many odd problems, and involves too many “extra pieces for next year” excuses.
Melo and Nene for Bynum and Odom (and Ratliff for salary)…. now THAT’S a trade that makes a lot of sense.
    Wont happen though.

    Celtics > Lakers w/Melo > Heat
