SVG: David Stern Oppresses Freedom of Speech

by Marcel Mutoni@marcel_mutoni

In his never-ending quest to defend Dwight Howard from the injustices of NBA refs (and the world in general), head coach Stan Van Gundy can be quite emotional. He talks a lot, and inevitably, really strange and funny comments emerge.

With Howard forced to sit out last night due to an automatic suspension from his 16 technical fouls, SVG was not a happy man, and the Orlando Magic‘s ensuing home loss to the Blazers did not help matters.

Prior to the game, Van Gundy complained that he couldn’t truly express his opinion because of David Stern … but then he went right ahead and expressed his opinion. He’s the best.

From the Orlando Sentinel:

A reporter later asked whether the technical-foul system is fair, but Van Gundy expressed concern that any statement of opinion could net him a fine from league officials. “I can’t answer that,” Van Gundy responded. “And I certainly can’t have an opinion because David Stern, like a lot of leaders we’ve seen in this world lately, don’t really tolerate other people’s opinions or free speech or anything. So I’m not really allowed to have an opinion, so it’s up to him. He decides. And he likes the system that he has.”

Later, a reporter asked Van Gundy if he was comparing Stern to Middle East tyrants such as former Egypt leader Hosni Mubarak or Libya leader Moammar Gadhafi. “I did not say that at all,” Van Gundy said. “I don’t even remember even mentioning their names. No, I do not. I just said David Stern does not want other people’s opinions and he does not tolerate freedom of speech when it comes to NBA issues. He’s the only opinion.”

This adds fuel to my belief that people like Stan Van Gundy, Gregg Popovich and Rasheed Wallace should be mic’d up at all times. Their entertainment value is off the charts, and needs to be exploited to a greater degree.

  • http://www.nba.com/celtics lightsout

you think Stern will see the irony when he fines SVG for saying this?

  • johnny c

^no, Stern dont give a sh*t because he’s a a tyrant, and tyrants never see the bad that comes from their ways. poor SVG tho, his jobs gonna be a lot tougher now for speaking the truth

  • jay

Hey remember when there was a witch trial against Kobe??? Wasnt that so cool???

  • Omar

Stan will have a choice…of charities he wants to pay 25k.

  • http://www.bleacherreport.com Caribbean Baller

The Angel of Stern will lighten someones pockets…..hope SVG pays “straight cash homie”

  • jimmer

Heroic. The problem with Stern is he’s not interested in sport, the actual physical contest that you and I engage in whenever we lace up. He’s only interested in selling a product, it just so happens that the product he has ended up in charge of is basketball. He could be an all-powerful brand leader of insulation foam or double sided tape, and he’d approach his staff the same way he approaches the leagues players and coaches.

  • izzo

Is this part two of the “Stan Van Gundy says one correct thing a day” series?

  • Mike Mihalow

Rasheed Wallace retired. Giving him a mic would be useless right now.

  • Felix

^ disagree. would love to see Rasheed micced in real life. I wonder if he protests every thing. see if he complains about every dinner check like he did every foul ever called against him “WHAT! I DIDNT ORDER A SALAD! GTFOH!”

  • Overtime

Agree with Felix, get Sheed on the mic

  • ahj

He might be like that but stern single handedly revived this leugge.

  • Felix

Rasheed probably also has some real S%^t to say, and he’s not afraid to say it

  • Felix

both Van Gundy’s rock… Marc Jackson JVG my favorite announcing team

  • JD

Well he does have a point, the NBA dress code, people being fined by purely expressing their thoughts, and the whole rondo headband thing, i think david stern need to lighten up a bit

  • http://slamonline.com SWIFTboy

    @Felix: Fork don’t lie!

  • http://Www.slamonline.com Negetivekreep

@ Ahj: Single handedly? You ever heard of Larry, Magic and mike?…

  • http://stapledesign.com Spaceship Jay

If I were SVG I’d walk into Stern’s office and pay him in ones. Rain-making style.

  • vtrobot

we need to start a twitter revolution to get stern exiled. and yeah, mic sheed as soon and as often as possible.

  • elmaar

    lmao@spaceship jay

  • http://www.slamonline.com/online/category/blogs/farmer-jones/ Ryan Jones

Gadafhi has his soldiers gunning down citizens of his own country with anti-aircraft guns and pulling wounded people from ambulances. Stan needs read something other than the sports section for a change.

  • http://slamonline.com knickfan

@ Ryan, SVG wasn’t comparing Stern to Ghadafi. The media made that connection. He simply said Stern doesn’t respect, or want to hear the opinions of others.

  • Felix

couple things that probably need to change in sports culture, IMO-
    1. comparing sports to war-athletes to soldiers. its just entertainment, and it seems disrespectful to the real troops.
    2. referring to athletes as beasts…they are men and women, and though humans are animals, a beast is something a little more sinister

  • Felix

lol Spaceship jay… just picturing SVG with some shades on and a big wad o cash bouncin bills offa stern with some girls clingin to his shoulders(who does a pretty good job IMO. His job cant be easy)

  • Felix

    *Stern does a good job

  • Fat Lever

This is simple musings to “The Real King”, he of the Sterns of yore. He will undoubtedly get a good laugh from this recent rant by a peon such as Stan. Then he will decree that Stan is wrong, which will subsequently lighten his wallet. That is true power my friends. LONG…..LIVE….THE…..REAL……KING(Stern).

  • Felix

^lmao where is that Philosopher dude anyways? I guess heat didnt play yesterday, but still

  • mike

    svg mvp

  • robb

…and the fine he’s gonna get is the proof.

  • Fat Lever

    shout out to The Philosopher…

  • Tuomas

…And he’s not 100% right? Being that he’s the whiny-a** idiot he is, this fact actually says something.

  • http://hiphopolitico.com Carlos

    I miss Arenas circa 05 :/

  • allenp

we all know what svg was implying.

  • http://slamonline.com Ugh

@Ryan – he said right there in the article he WASN’T comparing Stern to Gadhafi.

  • http://slamonline.com Ugh

Also, how is gunning down people in your own country worse than gunning down people in someone else’s country? When did that become a distinction worth noting?

  • Justin

For all of the good things Stern has done in his tenure, there has been more good than bad lately. The no tolerance techs and the fines for speaking your mind being the latest. I love listening to SVG. He’s a quote a night and it’s hilarious

  • Zomged

    hahahaha, what a boss!

  • http://slamonline.com nazzzi

Co-sign Ugh. That’s typical American arrogance for you. We tend to only see the messed up things other governments do.
