Pau Gasol Wants Kendrick Perkins to Quiet Down

by Adam Figman | @afigman

Generally speaking, the Thunder have spent the past few years with a reputation as a pretty reserved bunch. Yeah, there was the time Kevin Durant referred to Chris Bosh as a “fake tough guy,” but for the most part, these guys have played hard on the court and kept their mouths shut off it.

Enter Kendrick Perkins. In a recent interview with ESPN The Magazine, the newly acquired OKC center—who has spent plenty of time battling with the Lakers on and off the hardwood as a member of the Celtics—proved that he’s maintained some of those old beefs by speaking negatively about a few of the Los Angeles Lakers players, as well as their coach, Phil Jackson.

Naturally, Lakers center Pau Gasol is none too happy about it, and he put out a simple message to Perkins and friends: Pipe down. ESPN Los Angeles is on it:

Not only did Perkins bring veteran leadership and championship experience from his eight seasons with the Boston Celtics, he also brought a distinct disdain for the Lakers.

In an interview with ESPN The Magazine after the trade, Perkins said the Lakers were “yesterday’s news” and added, “I don’t like Pau Gasol or Phil Jackson. Phil is arrogant. Pau is soft. Kobe [Bryant] tries to bring out his toughness, but he’s still soft.”

Pau Gasol says “certain players talk too much from my perspective.”

After an extended practice Saturday, Gasol smiled and shook his head when he was relayed Perkins’ remarks.

“Certain players talk too much from my perspective,” he said. “They should worry about their own stuff.”

Gasol said the Lakers, currently mired in a four-game losing streak, didn’t need any extra incentive to win Sunday against the Thunder but Perkins’ comments certainly didn’t hurt.

“You can’t control what other players do,” Gasol said. “It’s a tough opponent; we know that, they’ve gotten better. We want to beat them and if we can beat them up, even better. You got to have patience in life and the time will come to prove yourself and show what you got and what they got.”

Involvement in any sort of media back-and-forth is a (slightly) new look for the Oklahoma City, but who knows; maybe it’ll spark an intensity that’ll fire them up and help ‘em compete with the occasionally intimidating reigning champs.

Oh, and at 9:30 p.m. EST tonight, the Lakers and Thunder will go at it on NBA TV. Just a heads up. Could be interesting.

lol im sure they will get their chance. somehow i think the lakers will come out on top tho. OKC to me is their only true contender in the west. as far as talent i think its truly a WASH. i just dont think OKC has the poise and control but i could be wrong. either way gonna be great i love what perkins bringing

  • mike

pau is as soft as toilet paper

  • robb

Trading Perkins was a big mistake by Boston i don’t think they can reach the finals without him. But I dont think Perkins can win anything without the Celtics either.

  • http://slamonline.com The Black Rick Kamla

Perk can call whoever he want soft lol

  • http://slamonline.com The Black Rick Kamla

lol good job on the article picture Adam

  • Zabba

Perkins can make your hard, brick-lick dumps so soft just by staring at your rim, the crap will trickle down like it’s melted butter.

I love Perk, but Gasol could score on him, and outrebound him, at will. He’s just too tall for him, the C’s avoided that match up both years in the finals because if a guy’s that long Perk just can’t guard him, he’s much more suited to banging around with Bynum and just trying to keep him out of the paint.

The thing I find most interesting about this is his comment about Kobe. I get that people think Gasol is soft, and I get that some people find Phil annoying as he is constantly poking other teams. However, in what world is Kobe Bryant soft? Has it not basically been decided that he is the best competitor we have in this game? If you ask me, if theres one guy I know will never back down from anything, it is Kobe.

  • Jer dawg

We’ve heard the same crap from everyone about Gasol. “Soft” is the only thing he’s referred to all his time playing NBA basketball. Not once has anyone mentioned he’s lost skill or he just sucks. Vince Carter is soft and he’s born in United States. He hasn’t laid it on the line for the longest time. Is a highlight dunk, 25 points 6 rebounds, and a loss soft OR 15 points, 10 rebounds, and championships SOFT? Tired words from all the ballers who open their trap. Pau has withstood hardships and came out a champion as a valued contributor in a team sport. If boxing was what Pau does then he’s ABSOLUTELY soft. But that isn’t the case. Everyone is running with same ol’ ish.

  • Zabba

Vince Carter wishes he could still put up those kind of numbers…in practice.

Josh, I think Perk meant that Kobe tries to bring out Pau’s toughness. I do not think he was debating Kobes’ toughness.

  • Ziva

I think the fact that BOS sat Perkins at crunch time (all the damn time) in favor of Big Baby speaks volumes of who really is the soft one.

  • broski

i dont think the guy is calling kobe soft, he’s saying kobe tries to make pau ‘not soft’

Perkins is a beast and the perfect addition to the Thunder. Can’t wait to watch him go against Bynum. *snickers*

  • 2KInsider

Why is the media so obsessed with who is soft? This has been an everyday article for the last 3 weeks. I’d rather hear updates on the barry Bonds trial.

  • christianbullen

    damn zabba.

  • dahon

ROY…all star player as a franchise player in in memphis…with 2 rings. big contract. call him whatever, he’s still a better man than perk…

  • dahon

also..underrated defensive player..he never fouls out of a game. he plays intelligent basketball..

  • http://www.facebook.com/joe.l.brewer3 BlackPhantom

Perkins can talk when he becomes an NBA All-Star…..or maybe not

  • Heals

Aaaaahhhhh playoffs are in the air…

  • tonyknorr

@ josh – not saying kobe is super soft or whatever but if you want to see someone fold up like a bi**h and pout there is no better example than Kobe bryant in the 2006 playoffs against the pheonix suns when he and the rest of the lakers blew a 3-1 series lead and got their cookies stolen by steve nash and the suns.

  • 2KInsider

If Gasol is so soft, how come he isn’t the one always injured? Just saying.

  • http://nba.com EJ

    SHUT UP PERK!

  • Jake

Well, Pau may be soft but hes the one with two chips and a shot at the HOF so I think he gets the last laugh.

  • http://slamonline.com datkid

at the end of the day pau gasol>kendrick perkins…in every way except defensively

  • JoeMaMa

You can call Pau soft. You can call him X, Y, and Z. Just remember that you have to call him ‘champ’, too.

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

I think Kevin Durant’s comments on Bosh were pretty out of line–especially after viewing what actually happened between him and Bosh and Westbrook. It looked like Durant was the big instigator throughout that entire “altercation,” if you can even call it that.

  • holiday

Hey in case you all didn’t know a championship is a team accomplishment, not individual… I’m sure Kobe had a little bit to do with Pau getting a ring so that argument ain’t so great!

  • larrylegend

perk is 100% right, in phil’s case it works quite well.

  • Hambone

Players who call other players soft to make themselves look tough are soft

  • r2j

Ladies and gentlemen, we got ourselves a rivalry.
    We have MIA/BOS ORL/BOS SA/LA ORL/MIA and now it’s
    OKC/LA.

Can’t wait for the playoffs to start.

  • shane

Pay gasols two NBA championship rings aren’t too soft tho haha

Why does Perkins feel he can call anyone soft. If you take the word in a more literal sense… he has been mr glass the last couple years so maybe he should try the ‘being soft (which is basketball hater language for graceful, skilled, etc) thing so he can be on the court in May lol. Not quite as funny as Amare calling him soft (another hater) but still…. C’mon. Pau has BOTH those guys in his rearview.

  • Riggs

@2kinside: because he avoids contact duh.

  • Burbank Mile

If Perkins wants to talk about soft, he needs to start at his midsection!

  • 2KInsider

He avoids contact because he is too busy putting the ball in the basket with his soft touch.

  • Mhok

perkins look like a KING KONG

  • mick

the bottom line is the league will not let the thunder beat lakers

  • IAMORANGE4EVER

    OKC 120 LAL 106

    Perkins should shut up

  • http://google c_cantrell

c_cantrell wants pau gasol to stop being a b*tch

  • charles

Hey Perk, why don’t you mind your own business and actually do something to help your team win some games. More particularly, game 7s. Oh that’s right, the one game where it mattered the most, you sat out because of an injury. Soft. Oops, sorry, that wasn’t soft, that was an accident, that could have happen to anyone like Greg Oden but no it happened to you! Guys, wanna know why Perk is talking about LA behind their asses? It’s because he’s still bitter about losing to them in the finals and he couldn’t do a damn thing about it except maybe high-five his teammates and act all tough. Sorry but the Lakers aren’t yesterday’s news.. no, my brother, yesterday’s news featured you getting injured at just the right time.
