Andrew Bynum: ‘We Have Trust Issues’

by Marcel Mutoni@marcel_mutoni

The first two games of the Lakers/Mavericks series have taught us a number of things: Dirk Nowitzki is a killer basketball cyborg of some sort, JJ Barea is apparently unstoppable, and the Lakers’ mini-dynasty is teetering, on the verge of total collapse.

According to Andrew Bynum, one of his team’s biggest issues is trust. Or a lack thereof.

With L.A. now staring into a daunting 0-2 hole as they head back to Dallas, Bynum points to some glaring internal team problems, but ever the optimist, he still believes they can pull themselves out of the considerable mess they’ve created.

The Daily News, ESPN and the OC Register have the quotes:

“I don’t even know the root of it at this point,” Andrew Bynum said. “Obviously, we have trust issues and unless we come out and discuss them nothing is going to change.” Bynum says trust issues have been there all season “individually between all 13, have trust issues.”

Bynum: “We have to get to the root, not candy coat or talk around issues.” What is root problem? “That’s for us.”

Despite citing team’s “trust issue,” Bynum said: “We are capable of doing what everyone deemed impossible.”

Kobe Bryant didn’t deny Bynum’s statement completely — acknowledging Andrew’s frustration with the lack of proper help defense — but he tried his best to calm the waters, and adopted his usual defiant stance in the face of mounting adversity.

The Lakers have a lot of things to figure out if they’re to get back in this series. The three-point shooting, team defense, bench production, and Pau Gasol’s production have all been atrocious.

Can the defending back-to-back champs sort out their issues in time, or is this how it ends for Phil Jackson and his squad?

Kobe Bryant planted the seeds of the beginning of the end a few weeks ago when he called his own team weird, now the series is not over yet… but bynum’s “we got trust issues” denotes that bryants constanting harping on them has finally worn this team out… so much for his encouragement…

    Poor Phil.

  • bull22

i think SLAM reported on that we are weird story also.

As I watch the games, I think Drew is right on. Not that I’m a big fan of the team, but it’s kinda disappointing to see the Lakers go out like this. Sorta like the way the Spurs faded in the end. There’s new blood this year. You gotta love it though, if you love the game.

and this guy saying Kobe planted the seeds of this??? … you better stick to talkin about your team

    The Lakers are a mess!

I don’t think this series is over by any means, though I wish it were over, but I found Kobe’s response to Bynum’s comment interesting. It’s like he halfway dismissed it. When Bynum made reference to certain teammates being hesitant to pass the ball at times, Kobe kinda wrote it off. His teams always fail when he’s in selfish mode. Let’s hope he keeps it up :-) .

@zoom: It’s ovah! Believe it. The Mavs will win 2 more games in this series. BOOK IT!

  • bull22

true, series is not over yet but its dang close….. phil jackson has never, never, ever lost the first two opening home games of a playoff series… yeah anything can happen but these la nutcases have alot of work to do…

    There goes that sixth ring

  • KobesBestFriend

Drew is right!!!why is he not getting the ball???Pau and Lamar are playing as soft I’ve ever seen…at this point I’d take Kwame over them!!!Get #17 the ball!!!

Well its time to rebuild L.A. espicially getting rid of the useless Killer B’s!

  • http://www.twitter.com/jtrain73 Jono

The Lakers are not in a mess, they just got torn apart by JJ Barea. He’s unreal, just give credit to JJ, Dirk, Jet, Kidd, Chandler/Haywood and Marion for being a great T-E-A-M. The Lakers are hardly on a verge of ‘collapse’, they just finished 2nd in the west! The Mavs are just that good as an 8 man unit.

Hold on, I’ll get the casket for you.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Max

@ Jono, yeah and the Spurs finished first in the west and look were they’re now.
Didn’t Cleveland (Lebron years) learn you something about regular seasons?

  • angus

as charles barkley says ”the fat lady is clearing hear throat”….

  • robb

I’ll be the first to admit what a good team the Mavs are this year. Dirk is great and Barea had a great game, but the Lakers just didn’t wanna compete, I mean did you watch Gasol? seriously that guy was at his softest, and Steve Blake had the worst game as a Laker, Lamar Odom couldn’t be bothered, and the team’s shooting was just atrocious. Phil has 11 rings he just doesn’t seem to care anymore. They didn’t play like champions at all, no pride, no energy, nothing.

  • AD

Kobe is done plus hes a bad leader… i remember when he wanted jkidd so badd and wanted bynum 2 go kick rocks …… he showed he was done last year in the finals…. He needs to retire at the top cuz the lakers are done unles cp3 goes there…. but i doubt

  • http://itsahardwoodlife.blogspot.com omphalos

Yeah Bynum is doing the most work from what I’ve seen, and he’s had to work very hard for his points against Chandler and Haywood.

  • 1982

While Kobe is easy to hate on, he’s not done. They might want to put DFish down, cause he can’t guard anyone. When your top scorer has to defend their pg, and your small forward has to clothesline their backup point while your pg just watches…They never had an answer for Dirk in the past (Pau isn’t doing much) but the real problem is how much free reign JKidd is getting, and how tired by the time JJ checks in. Do agree with AD that Kobe is a horrible leader.

such a stupid thing to say, it demoralizes your team and it gives the other team a morale boost

Remember Game 5 of the Finals last year against Boston? Kobe made a number of impossible shots possession after possession and the Lakers could just not get a stop.

It’s their defense and their bench. Gasol needs to step up in all facets.

But Kobe is going to show some spectacular things on Friday night.

  • Double J

I’m a die-hard Laker, but will this be the year that Dirk overcomes Miami for the ring? Or will it be a repeat of 06?

  • flipnoyce

And I wonder why no one in the Laker stadium yelling MVP. Like I said in the beginning on this series, its going to be a battle between GASOFT and DIRK. A lot of you HOBE lovers out there seems to think that HOBE will be enough to win it all. A 40 year old KIDD guarding HOBE or vice versa is just pathetic. “Trust Issues” ????. Bynum, why don’t you walk straight up to ballhog and tell him yourself to pass the damn ball. Lakers are done, no 3peat in sight. They might steal one in Dallas but that won’t be enough. I’m still waiting for Hobe’s infamous GRILL and drop 81 pts. Oh wait he can’t, this team aint the Raptors. Enough said, Lakers goin’ fishing in 5 or 6!!!!

  • http://kobebeefnba.com LDR4

Bynum has had trouble when Haywood is on the floor. Haywood has the size to move him away from the post and out into the floor. It opens up the lane for players like Barea and also limits Bynum’s rebounding. Oh, and then there is Dirk. Unstoppable.

  • OvaChiken

I’m just glad J Kidd is still ballin for that title. MEGA PROPS. Oh yeah & Why doesn’t the so called best player take at least some of the blame. Oh i forgot he’s a chump a$$ Mo Fo WITH GREAT FOOTWORK ! Yeeah right. Oklahoma gonna have their hands full next round. Dallas be erasin fools.

  • OvaChiken

Calvin stop salivatin . The guy is done.

  • OvaChiken

You don’t say Andrew. + Ron Artest doesn’t love his psychologist anymore its evident.

There isn’t much you can do to stop Dirk, however Lamar should be matched up against him most of the time. Not get too discouraged by Dirks output but he has to have big games offensively for them to win and he hasn’t yet. Let’s not forget that they gave away game 1 so the series could’ve have been tied. Doubling Dirk is a complete waste of time so they need to stop doing that. Most importantly hit some open shots FCOL.
