DeShawn Stevenson Thrilled to Beat ‘Classless’ Miami Heat

by Marcel Mutoni@marcel_mutoni

While many are happy for Dirk Nowitzki and the Dallas Mavericks finally winning a title, one can’t escape this fact: DeShawn Stevenson is an NBA champion now.

This means we must tolerate Stevenson’s antics — something that was completely unacceptable in the past — and listen to his boasts now that he’s wearing the proverbial belt.

DeShawn wore a t-shirt that was dissing his nemesis LeBron James when he arrived back in Dallas following Game 6, and says it feels great to beat the Miami Heat after the way they acted during the NBA Finals.

From ESPN:

“It makes me feel good, man, to beat him, to beat that Miami team,” Stevenson [said]. “The way they act, the way they treated Dirk [Nowitzki], all the things that they said were very classless. To win on the court the way we did it, it was wonderful.”

Stevenson, like many of the Mavericks, did not feel as if the Heat respected them during the series. That added a little extra enjoyment to Sunday night’s celebration. “I think we did it with class,” said Stevenson, who was involved in a shoving match with Miami’s Udonis Haslem and Mario Chalmers that resulted in technical fouls for each during the second quarter of Game 6. “They tried all kind of different things and made fun of us and were on the go-karts laughing after Game 1, like they already won the championship. To beat them on their court, it feels good.

DeShawn Stevenson and his Abe Lincoln neck tattoo are headed to the White House along with the rest of the NBA champion Mavericks next year. This is actually happening.

May God help us all.

i dont know if i would go as far as saying the mavs had much more class (outside of dirk, kidd and a couple others). but is this statement really coming from stevenson?

  • http://www.fiba.com Darksaber

Awww, where was all this shock and awe when YOUR team’s resident psycho, Artest was yapping it up after last year’s championship, Marcel?
    Ps: Nice T-Shirt.

  • http://www.nba.com/celtics lights out

tough to disagree with him. classless seems pretty spot on when describing two guys who suggest that a player who just roasted them was faking his illness. “sore losers” also would’ve worked. although i’m not quite sure how bosh was “classless.” to me, he’s fairly likeable. he only gets picked on because 1) he’s part of the heat, and 2) he makes himself an easy target sometimes.

I need to go back to teaching my critical thinking course. And if you’re a critical thinker, you know why I’m saying that.

  • http://slamonline.com Spaceship Jay

Again, congrats to you Dark, the only Mav-rider I know. And yes, that T-shirt was FOOLISH. Cheaply made, but foolish nonetheless.

  • tomtom

What do you mean Cheryl? You have pricked my curiosity…

  • http://www.twitter.com/jdotd @JdotD

This coming from a guy who wore a “LeBron, tell me how my Dirk tastes” T-Shirt, hahah.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Wayno

Did anyone really excpect Miami to act with class? They wouldn’t have been classy if they won, they aren’t classy in defeat. Everybody expects that. They’re a bunch of classless prima donnas which is why the majority of the basketball world is happy they lost. Screw everyone who knocks people for reveling in thier failure, they’ve set themselves up for it and they deserve every ounce of criticism.

  • bull22

shout out to ALL of you who with ethusiasm for the game made the playoffs interesting, and sergio i did stick around until end of finals as i said. my last item on the agenda today, EBOY a few weeks ago told another fan we are taking final steps in our journey and without further adieu i think this is what he meant…… “THE FINAL JOURNEY” “THOU SHALL LEAD THIS HEAT ON THIS GLORIOUS JOURNEY,THOU SHALL PREPARE A BISCAYNE FEAST FOR YOU, THOU SHALL BE YOUR KING, COME WITH ME MY OBNOXIOUS MIAMI BRETHREN, TO TAKE THESE FINAL STEPS INTO MY ABODE, WHERE THOU IS THE KING OF THE MIAMI SEWERS”………. HAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHHAAHAHHAHAHHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAH

*Proceeds to wave hand in front of face*

  • http://slamonline.com GotHandles?

coming from the most classless player in the league….interesting.

  • Sizzle

Hats off to the Mavs, but tell me how you define class and I doubt you will find the following: Someone waving their hands in front of their face and throwing up 3 signs, wagging their tongue like dogs after threes, tatooing the championship trophy on your arm, wearing shirts saying how my Dirk taste, etc. Doesn’t really fit my definition of Class. Outside of Dirk and JKidd, I didn’t really see any class.

  • tRay

    Cosign Sizzle!

  • danmcdirty

stevenson just said what almost everyone else outside miami was thinking. and as an nba champ there is nothing wrong with that

  • Flight

Ironic how this is one of the most ‘unclassy’ players in the league. Not only that, not nearly as talented as he thinks.

  • Dubson

@ SLAMONLINE, Marcel Mutoni, Cheryl, Eboy, and any Heat fan

GET OFF IT!!! Slam is a joke. You all are d**kriders. Just a joke as a magazine. Ron did the same ish Marcel and where were you at? Lebron is a baby and he can’t win. Dwayne, lost all respect for that dude after the way he’s been acting, Bosh is still Ru Paul, and as the tool comedian said “If you ask Bron for change for a dollar you’ll only get 3 quarters.”

HEAT SUCK. Slam, get new staff writers.

  • theDankerNuggets

This reminds me if that saying i’m not sure how it goes but it’s something like “That’s like the donkey calling the horse an ass.”

  • lewis2307

deshawn is just a hanger on and a piece of S*$T with as much class as a fake diamond rolex

The Secret Service gonna be keeping all eyes on DeShawn Stevenson lol

  • http://fivemag.de Speedy

He remembers me of Vernon Maxwell.
Great defender, without fear, clutch shooting from time to time and endeless offcourt problems

  • http://www.arbys.com LilKDub503

Erm, I have a problem with this coming from Stevenson. He needs to shut the f up and enjoy his ring (or crown, which I think Cuban will get the Mavs as a shot at LeBron). We know this, we’re not stupid. It’s almost equivalent as the LeBron “People are gonna have their problems” thing. Shut up, say something else.

And really Stevenson? You’re the guy who provoked Udonis Haslem, has a jillion crappy tats, and you open your mouth way too much.

  • http://www.slamonline.com/online/nba/2008/01/cleaning-out-my-closet/ Myles Brown

Comparing Ron Artest and DeShawn Stevenson means you either have a very short memory or you can’t read above a third grade level.

  • http://www.slamonline.com/online/nba/2008/01/cleaning-out-my-closet/ Myles Brown

Has Ron Artest ever got caught cheating on his SAT’s? Did anyone ever get shot at Ron’s house? Did Ron have sex with a 14 year old when he was in his twenties? If so, then yes, there would be grounds to compare the two and even chuckle at any mention of either calling another human being classless. But to my knowledge, only one of them has. Ron thanked his psychiatrist and had a jovial exchange with the media. He didn’t ask anyone how his d*ck tastes. Oh, and Ron is um….a lot better at basketball.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

Myles!….ftw. comments rarely, but always on point.

  • Sizzle

“Stevenson flirted with skipping college and declaring his eligibility to go pro, a decision that upset his mother. The Jayhawks lost their future star when a surprisingly impressive jump in his SAT score caught the attention of the Educational Testing Service, which “red-flagged” it, making him temporarily ineligible to play. Stevenson could have appealed and explained how he had managed to improve his score from 450 as a sophomore to 1,150 as a senior.[2] Instead, he took the SAT a second time and received less than a 650, well below the NCAA minimum of 820.[3]” – Sounds like a real winner to me haha.

  • http://theurbangriot.com The NUPE

I don’t have a problem with Stevenson saying this at all. Just because he doesn’t have class himself, doesn’t make him wrong to point out when somebody else doesn’t have it. Actually if Dirk or Kidd said it unprompted, I would have been disapointed that they would say something like that. So, the fact that Stevenson made the comment (and the T-Shirt), is really fitting. The classless can always spot classless, so what’s the problem with Stevenson?

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

^ Well, the problem would be that he has no class.

  • bike

Stevenson is living proof of the inverse relationship between percentage of fast-twitch muscle fibers and I.Q.

  • jordeniche

    @Dallas Mavericks – congratulations
@Miami Heat – thanks for the great season, please pardon the haters

  • jordeniche

@DeShawn the bum, sit your ass down somewhere

  • http://www.kb24.com The Seed

I liked it, Its like with Lebron wore a MVP shirt. So people acting like they never had beef with someone, you beat them, then you talk smack. Lebron should have backed it up on the court, so now Lebron I GAVE YOU A DOLLAR, YOU GAVE ME BACK 75 CENTS, BECAUSE YOU DON”T HAVE A 4TH QUARTER. BOOK IT!!

  • iLL wiLL

    I can’t feel my face.

  • http://slamonline.com james ellis jr

i guess deshawn like ron artest…i like to thank my head shrink for this ring….lol

  • http://cnbc.com JTaylor21

LeBron “Third Wheel” James deserves all the criticism he’s being getting, so……YAWN!!!

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com Moose

You won’t see showboating on his Facebook page.

  • somedude

Really the pot calling the kettle black; isn’t it?

  • http://www.fiba.com Darksaber

Oh yes, Artest the guy who went into the stands to brawl w. Fans, forgot how classy that player was.
    Talk about short memories.
Still could care less about most of these guys transgressions, after all a guy who assaulted a shady girl turned into a bball messiah of sorts for a whole city and more, so rings obviously also equal memory loss.
My bringing Artest into this was a direct reaction to the exasperated tone of the Article above, written by a Laker fan.
Cuban was behind this t-shirt anyway, he’s finding all kinds of ways, childish or not, to rub his 2011 NBA CHAMPIONSHIP DALLAS MAVERICKS in everyone’s faces.

  • http://slamonline.com tealish

DeShawn straight balled this series. He backed up his trashtalk and more. I didn’t expect that at all.

  • Kid Dynamite

Wow, DeShawn is actually making headlines. I must be in purgatory…..

  • rikson

Not a class act by stevenson either one would think…

  • papabearATL

DeShawn might be the wrong messenger for this one, lol! I can’t even begin to imagine the gloating, hi-hater, I told you so, we the best, blah blah blah statements from the Heat had they won though. I think the fact that they don’t get do that upsets them even more than not being Champions. Lebrons statement pretty explains how it would’ve been had they won. They couldn’t wait to make ‘everyone’ eat their words and the script was flipped…

  • supermaaaaan

Heat Fans need to understand this, the Heat organisation tried to buy all the top players during the Free Agency period, bought the refs during the Finals but one thing you guys can’t buy is a CHAMPIONSHIP TITLE….ITS EARNED! Even though I don’t like Stevenson, you have to admit he does have a point. Look at Howard of the Heats, all he was there during the Season/Playoff was tormenting players during games and for flagrant fouls, the Heats is East Coat most Hollywood team…EVER!!!!! *You Mad? lol

  • rikson

“Heat Fans need to understand this, the Heat organisation tried to buy all the top players during the Free Agency period, bought the refs during the Finals but one thing you guys can’t buy is a CHAMPIONSHIP TITLE….ITS EARNED!” -> Well, the I-told-you-so, we-the-best talk cant be much worse than this^^

  • Nik

Just because your an NBA champion doesn’t give you the right to be disrespectful. Just like just because your a policeman doesn’t mean the law doesn’t apply to you. If LeBron was saying this instead of Stevenson, he’d be criticized to death. Everyone should be measured with the same stick. Therefore shame on Stevenson. He’s the real disrespectful, classless, arrogant person.

  • Marina Medina

OMG!!!!!!!!!! Stevenson amongst all the players in this league talking about class?. He looks like a newspaper with tattoos even in his neck, and he is a below average player who,to say the truth, played very well for first time in his life. Nobody talks here of all the trash he threw at the Miami Heat and Lebron, and for what he did to UD in the finals? He,and just him, should have been called for a Tech…. I’m not defending Lebron’s passive an poor play in the finals, but let’s face it: He is talking about a player who is 100,000,000 times better than him. Now,according to Mavericks’ coach, Nowitzki is the best player of the planet. Really? Do not make me laugh!!!!!!!!!

  • Marina Medina

The man who thinks the Miami Heat are a “classless” bunch, was booked on charges of public drunkenness last night. Per TMZ, which has the glorious mugshot (word to the Abe Lincoln tat!): “Law enforcement sources tell us, police received a call about some drunk guy wandering around an apartment comlpex in Irving, TX last night — and when cops showed up, they found Stevenson … who said he was lost. Stevenson — who does not live in the apartment complex — then flunked a field sobriety test … and was arrested for public intoxication. Law enforcement sources tell us, the officers ‘felt he was a danger to himself and others.’”

  • Marina Medina

Great act of class by a real BUM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Marina Medina

  • MFFL

The Heat WERE classless during the finals. There’s no denying that. There’s no excuse for it.

I’m a longtime hardcore Mavs fan and it pains me to say that a player on my team has stooped to their level. His shirt was admittedly hilarious, but showed no taste. And while the Mavs deserve to celebrate this victory, getting arrested for public intoxication is just embarrassing for me as a fan.

Some of the shirts Mavs fans were sporting today at the parade were just as tasteless. It makes our team and our city look bad. I don’t like being associated with it. Innocent and fun jabs or teasing is perfectly fine (there was some done today that was really funny), but I didn’t like seeing Stevenson’s shirt and I was embarrassed to see similar shirts (and one even worse, proudly displaying the phrase “F*** LeBron”) today. Rivalries are fun, but when you’re in a PUBLIC arena, keep the inappropriate personal stuff out of it. Just keep it classy. IT IS NOT THAT DIFFICULT.

In my opinion, players should take a note from Dirk. He doesn’t trash-talk his competitors (in a public setting), he focuses on the game instead of off-the-court antics and becoming a brand name, he ALWAYS discusses the Mavs as a team effort and acknowledges his teammates’ good performances in a game more than his own, and he’s probably one of the most humble athletes of all time.
