Report: David West to Become an Unrestricted Free Agent

David West’s contractual situation has been looming over the New Orleans Hornets for quite a while now, and things will reportedly not get any easier for that team’s front-office. From ESPN: “Despite suffering a season-ending knee injury in March, New Orleans Hornets power forward David West is expected to opt out of the final season of his contract this week and become a free agent, according to sources close to the situation. West has a June 30 deadline in his contract to notify the Hornets whether he will invoke next season’s $7.5 million salary or opt for free agency, but sources say that the Hornets are already bracing for West to make his opt-out decision official before Thursday’s buzzer. The Hornets have anticipated all along that West would become a free agent, even though the former All-Star was forced to undergo surgery in April to repair a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee suffered March 24. The reason: West still figures to be one of the two or three most coveted players on the open market in spite of the injury after years of consistent production and averages of 18.9 points and 7.6 rebounds in 70 games last season. The Hornets, sources said, would still love to sign West to an extension before Thursday’s deadline. But it’s believed that West — even in a financial landscape forecasted to be more restrictive starting next season and even factoring in his injury — will eventually earn more in free agency than he could in an extension that would have to be calculated with next season’s $7.5 million salary as a starting point. Free agency will be delayed if the NBA, as expected, imposes a lockout July 1. But sources say only an unforeseen rehabilitation setback in the next 72 hours would change West’s plans.”

Goodbye chris paul.was nice knowing you

Does he really think he’ll earn more than $7.5mil in a contract this year given the lockout? Or does he really want out of New Orleans?

Hopefully DWest can get himself a nice contract.

Most likely headed to the Nets. Teaneck, NJ native, and has opportunity to still play with a top 3 point guard. Wold also play next to a legitimate center in Brook Lopez, and would never have to worry about manning that position like he did in New Orleans. Nets probably can get him for much less than his market value because of the injury as well.

CP3, it’s time to move to LA

I don’t think any playoff contending teams NEED a David West except OKC (MAYBE Orlando). The Thunder should jump on him quick.

Dude doesn’t really deserve any morethan 7.5 per. A bit overrated

Look a the players around the league that make 6-9 mil a year. West deserves it in todays league. Yes, many guys are overpaid, but at market value, West should get more than 7.5 mil

Caboose he knows that a whole new contract will likely be worth more overall money then an extension on his current deal that must start at 7.5Million. — However, I don’t know what he expects to get out of free agency. It’s apparent to me that winning is not his #1 priority. There is no contender with a need at PF, let alone a playoff team with more then the mid-level to spend on a pick&pop PF who doesn’t rebound or play defense.

sign him to NJ. humphries isnt going to be that good anymore.

    nbk’s favorite player. Lol

haha you know me, one to pick favorites. especially those that only play half the sport

David West needs to sign to the Lakers, he can take Ron Artest’s spot in the line-up, and then the Lakers can work on trading Artest, Odom, Shannon Brown, Steve Blake, Matt Barnes, any of those pieces. Get a good point starting point, and compete for another championship.

@nbk- How about Indiana? They need a 4, and they have cap room to give him the contract he wants. And they’re a border line playoff team.

  • http://Slamonline.com nbk

That would work. How much cap-room do they have? I’m on my phone or else I’d check hoopshype. My question is, do you want a 30 year old PF who just tore up his knee on that team? but you may be right.

  • http://google J-Ro

i think theyre just about 20 mil under the cap

  • http://Slamonline.com nbk

Roughly you are right. They are as of right now at 36.75mill as a team for next year. The new CBS gonna dictate how far below the cap they are. Idk if they will spend that money on David West but he seems like a logical fit if they want a veteran.

  • holiday

Chicago should go after him, maybe try and talk NO into a sign and trade for Boozer, honesty there real similar but West has more heart!

Do you think Larry Bird would really risk impeding the process of Psycho T? Indiana seems enamored with the kid.
