Trade: Andre Miller to Denver, Raymond Felton to Portland

by Marcel Mutoni@marcel_mutoni

During an otherwise relatively quiet Draft Night, the Denver Nuggets and Portland Trailblazers swung perhaps the most significant trade of the evening, as they swapped point guards.

Andre Miller will wear Nuggets powder-blue next season (whenever that is), and Raymond Felton is off to rainy Portland.

From the Denver Post:

George Karl always had a soft spot for former Nugget Andre Miller. And during this summer, the Nuggets developed a soft spot for Kenneth Faried. Sure enough, Denver got both Thursday — in addition to Jordan Hamilton of Texas — during a crazy night at the Pepsi Center. Denver traded point guard Raymond Felton to Portland for point guard Miller, in addition to a future second-rounder and the 26th pick in Thursday’s draft. It was acquired by Portland from Dallas — after the Mavs used the pick to select Hamilton, who is headed to the Mile High City. Portland also traded guard Rudy Fernandez to Dallas in the deal.

Faried, from Morehead State, was drafted by Denver with its 22nd pick of Thursday’s draft. He is 6-foot-7 1/2, 225 pounds and was college basketball’s dominant rebounder. He averaged 14.5 rebounds as a senior after two straight seasons when he averaged 13.

As part of the deal, Portland sent Rudy Fernandez to the Dallas Mavericks, in exchange for a pair of picks (Jordan Hamilton and Tanguy Ngombo.)

Is there any sense in this trade?
I mean, Portland had an advantage with Miller being a big guard getting in the middle..

  • Riggs

the sense of the trade is: Denver gets a veteran PG for ty lawson (who is their future), they also get faried who adds to their defense. Portland gets a PG who can create his own shot in bunches, gets to the line, is young and can pass with the best of em. Also the trade is good for denver because now they can bring miller off the bench instead of deciding between felton and lawson. What’s crazy is that Rudy Fernandez is going to Dallas….holy crap that team got better.

Felton is an upgrade over Miller. Much better at creating his own shot, better perimeter shooter, quicker. Not as strong as Miller in the post, but certainly not weak.
Miller works for Denver too. Just going to be asked to distribute the ball & run a bizarre offense as the backup to Ty Lawson.
I’d say Portland got the advantage though.
    Felton/Wes M/Wallace/Aldridge/Camby is a dope starting lineup.
    Felton/Wes/Batum/Wallace/Aldridge is nice too.

Wonder if this was due to Roy not getting along with Miller? Felton could do nicely with the Blazers, felt Andre Miller was abit underated in what he did for them though

And the Mavs got Fernandez for basically nothing, to me, they’re the winners in this deal.

@Easy Bee Mavs also got Petteri Koponen.

@EJ: Don’t really know him, but i guess it’s even better then.

  • Jeff

I sure Hope Peteri Koponen will play in a NBA uniform some day. I saw him in the summerleague and was impressed. Thats a nice kid.

  • G Diesel

The winners are the Mavs for getting Rudy Fernandez (upgrade over Peja) and Felton for getting a starting job.

Kinda feel bad for Felton. This time last year he was set to become the franchise PG to help lead the NY renascence, now he’s a Trailblazer. he must hate Melo. lol

Nuggets win this deal hands down.
Miller is a great PG to come off the bench and be a bigger threat in the post when he goes down there. He’s not the reason why they won, though. Denver got Faried who was their top choice all along. He will bring stability to the post after KMart walks to Dallas. On top of that, they had the #52 pick, but they traded it to Portland and pulled hte #26 pick, Jordan Hamilton, plus another 2nd rounder! Do Denver gets a 6’9″ SG who can hit the three to possibly replace JR Smith once he gets signed/traded at the midway point next season. Denver then sends a future #2 to the Lakers for Chu Chu Whatshisname….who I doubt will ever show up in Denver. For a team who had a lot of needs and two mediocre picks, the Nuggets pulled an Ace from the deck!

Will the Mavs be able to resign their players tho?

  • r2j

Miller is back in Denver, Portland got a point guard. Makes perfect sense.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Max

    So Miller wasn’t a PG?

  • T-Money

miller will not be ok with backing up ty lawson. i’m still waiting for other moves, this doesn’t make sense to me.

  • All Day

Everyone is assuming Dre Miller will be the backup PG. I don’t see it that way. I actually see Lawson coming off the bench, playing a role similar to JR Smith. Smith doesn’t start, but he comes off the bench and gets his minutes and his shots. I see the same role for Lawson. Dre has the size and low post game advantage over Lawson. Dre’s game is similar to Chancey Billups, except C-Bill is a much better shooter than Dre.

Damn . Mavs get Rudy . Well played dallas.

  • Yep

everyone seems to be glancing over the fact that felton and wallace will be playing together again — they had some great chemistry in charlotte for quite awhile. they were core pieces in a team that made the playoffs. now they are peripherals on a much more talented team. that’s a pretty balanced first 7-8 rotation for portland. dayum… oh yeah and don’t… forget… greg… oden….?

and yeah the mavs fleeced them gettin rudy. they just HAD to get better right?

    All Day
Nuggets wanted Lawson to be more of a scorer so i guess he’ll start.

  • dma

Rudy will give Mavs fan fits. At least there’s a direct flight from DFW to Spain. Portland gave up a lot to get Felton. But you have to realize they had to commit to Roy and Lamarcus, and Miller is a get my stats kind of player.

    Disgusted. Absolutely disgusted. F√¢k!!

  • Riggs

You know that scene in jurassic park where the raptor tricked the hunter and killed him, and right before she kills him he says “clever girl”? yeah thats the mavs in this trade.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

idk if Felton is much of an upgrade. The shooting he brings should be welcome, but he doesn’t run a team or penetrate like Miller. This could just be getting younger, or a Gerald Wallace induced trade, considering they were former teammates in Charlotte. Maybe he talked Felton up to management. (What’s the salary difference between Felton and Miller?)

  • http://www.bulls.com Enigmatic

@Soop – Felton’s due to make $7.5 mil next year. Miller $7.8 mil.

  • http://www.egay.com eGirl

    what ever happened to eBoy?

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

Is either player expiring though matic?

  • http://www.facebook.com/joe.l.brewer3 BlackPhantom

Why is no one mentioning Brandon Roy?? I know he’s injury prone but damn he didn’t retire, did he?

  • http://www.bulls.com Enigmatic

There’s a team option for Miller for 11-12. If picked up, that’s the final year of his contract.
Felton’s expires after 11-12. No option.

  • http://yahoo J-Ro

Maybe offer Andre Miller to the Lakers for Odom??

  • http://www.pablasso.com pablasso

J-Ro: and why would LA do that? Dre is good, but Odom is the living mismatch.

  • http://www.triplejunearthed.com/dacre Dacre

Andre Miller was able to man handle Flake Griffin in a way that NO OTHER PG in the league can. Portland will miss his go-smack-yourself attitude on the court. If this was done purely for Brandon Roys benefit then I consider this a big mistake. Brandon Roy WILL NOT go the distance for the Blazers when they take the court again…

  • http://www.slamonline.com Amare Excuses

how about trading Greg Oden for jeremy Tyler makes more sense. atleast jeremy Tyler gets to play hehehehe

  • mdshuai33

No one mentions Roy because, despite how great of a player he was, he has no cartilage left in his knees, and it remains to be seen how effective he can be now. Its sad, but Portland is Lamarcus’ team now, him and Wallace; and with the way Aldridge played after taking the reigns of the team last year, I’d say things are looking up again.

  • jdog

this trade was so dumb the nuggets lost a great player that i say was better than lawson and was yong, for just a pg that can play in the post
