Robert Horry: Lakers Need a New, Younger Point Guard

by Marcel Mutoni@marcel_mutoni

Aside from his cold-blooded execution late in huge Playoff games, Robert Horry has always been known for his candidness.

When asked about the Los Angeles Lakers’ needs heading into next season, and beyond, Horry didn’t hesitate to point out what he (and many others) consider to be the team’s most glaring weakness.

According to the former Laker, Derek Fisher shouldn’t be counted on to be the starting point guard anymore. It’s because Fisher is very old, Robert Horry claims, no longer capable of doing the job meant for younger men.

From the LA Times:

“No disrespect to Derek Fisher. Derek is alone. I’ve been there, done that. They need a point guard who can distribute the ball, get everyone in order and not be afraid to tell Kobe no,” Horry said.

“You can’t outrun age. I think age has caught up to him. There’s some things he can do, but there are some things he can’t do.”

Of course, this is something Laker fans have been saying for years now, even when Derek Fisher was pulling off his postseason heroics. What’s noteworthy, is that ex-teammates (especially ones who won NBA titles together) rarely criticize one another so openly.

It’s clear that the Lakers must address their point guard situation if they plan on contending for championships with the current group. But Derek Fisher is a proud and stubborn man, who won’t easily fade into the background, to the chagrin of just about everyone who cares about the team it seems.

All of you little people(IGNORANT), WHO LOVE TO RIDICULE AND LIE ABOUT
KOBE BRYANT, PROBABLY CANNOT SPELL BASKETBALL OR HAVE EVER PLAYED.THE LAKERS AND THE NBA, WILL NEVER SEE THE LIKES OF KOBE BRYANT WHEN HE RETIRES. I HOPE IT IS NO TIME SOON. THE GREATEST PLAYER OF THE DECADE PLUS, STILL HAS GAME !

No disrespect to D-Fish. That cat is amazing. He has had an amazing run and while he can still knock down that game winning playoff shot and be a nice counter piece to Kobe, it is painfully obvious that he cannot guard any elite point guard in the League. Coming off the bench is deserved. Retired jersey in the rafters, likewise. But, for any knowledgable fan of the game, a quicker, younger point guard is essential. I vowed I would never diss D-Fish when he came through nearly every post season game, and I will not do so now. Simply stated, D-fish, you are a stud. You are an integral part of this team, but age messes us all up. Hey at 62, I know what I speak. That being said, you are a major player my man. Hang in there. Be humble. Accept the limitations of age and contribute as only you know how to do.

Love you…Derek. Without you, we are just a proud franchise without several rings. We won’t6 forget what you did and your selfless play. You have the heart of a lion!!

Robert Horry played with the lakers, and is probably the most clutch player in NBA history. He has won titles with three teams. He is justified in making his criticisms and since he played the game with Kobe and Fisher, he was earned the right to criticize specific players. Also coming from him it has different impact than from fans alone. It is clear, that for the good of the team, Derek Fisher, who has directly contributed to a number of Laker championships, should be made into a backup. His pride cannot be allowed to hurt the team, on the other hand, his professionalism can help the team immensely from playing a spot role and developing younger players. Fans should give him respect, he fought with everything he had for the Lakers, but his time is past. Either they should trade for a true point guard like Aaron Brooks, play Steve Blake, or play the rookie, Morris. Unfortunately, even with all this, it does not look like they will overcome the Dallas Mavericks, who are also reloading, and have a ton of confidence now from beating the Lakers and the NBA championship. Though it pains me to admit this, they are a better team right now, and could repeat.

I actually think Javaris Crittenton had some potential. They should have put some more attention on him, but i guess it’s too late. If the Lakers could possibly get someone like Chris Paul, then why the heck not.

Start Darius Morris! Simple as that. Get rid of Fisher and or Blake.
