Lakers’ New Offense to Focus on Gasol/Bynum, Not Kobe Bryant?

Based on what took place with the LeBron James-centric offense he ran in Cleveland, many people assumed Mike Brown would implement a similar system for Kobe Bryant in Los Angeles. Not so much, according to Kevin Ding of the OC Register, who recently had lunch with the Lakers’ new head coach and read the tea leaves from their chat: “For all who’ve wondered if Brown catered too much to LeBron James in Cleveland, some within the Lakers’ organization wondered if Shaw would’ve catered too much to Bryant here in a system Bryant actually understood even better than Shaw did. And whether you want to read a lot or a little into it, note this: When talking about the contrasting offensive styles Brown will show from Cleveland to here, the new Lakers’ coach summarized the coming Lakers offense as feeding [Pau] Gasol and [Andrew] Bynum inside, not being the Kobe show. ‘This team is completely different from what I had in Cleveland,’ Brown said. ‘In Cleveland, I had a guy who liked to come off the top of the floor, liked to play in space and play pick-and-roll and make plays for others. Here, I’ve got two guys similar to what we had in San Antonio; you’re able to throw them the ball on the block.’ It’s impossible to imagine Bryant not getting his, however, and if the baseline for Brown’s Lakers basketball is going to be the passion and work ethic, though, Brown and Bryant will get along just fine. Keeping up with him in drive time, after all, is what Bryant has always wanted from and for his teammates. Brown’s specialty is getting it.”

Kobe for Dwight rumors here we go!

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

The Triangle played through them as well (all post players actually). Kobe just ignored it. We really think much is gonna change?

  • Chukaz

Its like this guy WANTS to get fired. Ever wonder why he didn’t win a championship in cleveland despite having the league’s best record 2 years in a row? its because he’s stupid. He had his best scorer in cleveland playing point forward and now he wants to run his offense thru his second and third best players? that’s stupid. if i were him i’d run a ton of kobe bynum pick and rolls with gasol standing in the short corner, or have kobe move without the ball more like ray allen and rip hamilton do but to a lesser extent (has anybody noticed how easily kobe makes 17 footers when he’s off the ball?)

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

Then the Lakers new offense will be sabotaged by Kobe Bryant.

  • http://celtics.com lights out

cosign Allenp. as if Mike Brown is really gonna be in charge of things.

  • cramzy

yeah, cause Kobe LOVED throwing the ball to Shaq on the block…Loved it

  • T-Money

not a surprise at all. mike brown came from the spurs organization and is a no-nonsense kind of coach who believes in defending, rebounding and post play. he just didn’t have the personnel to run things through the post in cleveland. but, as allen pointed out, i’ll be damned if mike brown can stop kobe from getting his whenever he wants to.

  • http://cnbc.com JTaylor21

The same guy that loathed feeding Shaq is now going to feed Bynum/Gasol? I think I just saw a pig flying.

Mike Brown may have the impression that that he abd Jimmy call the shots, but he needs to remember that Del Harris was given tge sane green light. If things go wrong, Dr. Buss will let everyone know who is in charge.

What kind of neandrathal would make Kobe Bryant subservient to Gasol and Bynum? Just because Brown could not get LeBron’s cooperation, he does not have any history with Kobe to kick Kobe to the curb.

Laker fans will not tolorate that from two people who have never won a championship. Fans will revolt if Browns ideas cause the team to fall on their faces.

  • dahon

it will open things up on bryant…lol.

  • nbaNw8

Kobe just booked the 1st flight out of LA

  • http://www.bulls.com Enigmatic

Back to LL though, he had mad battles with other rappers (Kool Moe Dee, Canibus, etc.) and so did Ice Cube (Common, B-Real, etc.) that I always thought it was inevitable the two would butt heads and battle one another.
But it never happened, and it would be wack if it happened now.

  • Ray

This is a recipe for sucess. Kobe will be on board. He was with Shaq for three Championships

  • http://www.bulls.com Enigmatic

    Whoops. Wrong post.
    It must be Friday….

  • dean

kobe will have to play team ball and get on board winning is all that counts not indivisal performace

  • http://cnbc.com JTaylor21

    Enigmatic, are you on smack?

  • http://Nba.com GP23

I thought the Lakers offense was “Give Kobe the ball, and everybody get the hell outta the way’ !!!

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

sarcasm or not, it was the triangle, that’s why they can win titles despite their best player shooting under 45%. Now Mike Brown is gonna come in and reiterate what the Lakers already did, like he is some kind of offensive savant. Your gonna do what Phil Jackson did, it just won’t be as fluid, no matter how you shake it, your new offense is a downgrade Mike Brown.

  • http://slamonline.com Tae

Damn im gonna miss tha triangle. But Kobe still gonna eat. I see his ppg goin up this season. Another note, anybody seen some of those 2k12 ratings??? Some people r upset over those. Lebron:98 Wade:96 Kobe :94 (bs) Bosh:80

  • http://Nba.com GP23

^ Jordan should be a 100. Wade is higher than Kobe, wow, did not see that coming….

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

Ya’ll are hilarious. 2 chips with Kobe as the 1st option and ya’ll think he’s a bum still. There better be a f*ckin season. I wanna talk shi+ again…

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

1st option by force. Pau Gasol is who that offense ran through, until Kobe decided otherwise. He is still their best player, but to think he is the most efficient offensive option at this stage is a little nutty. – And its pretty unanimous that people think Wade is better then Kobe at this stage as well. ESPN did a vote on it with all of their analysts. Wade was also more productive and efficient then Kobe at everything last season.

  • http://www.bulls.com Enigmatic

JTaylor, I meant to post on the Layup Lines.

  • http://slamonline.com Tae

@GP23 yea i didnt see that coming either. Everyone knows im no Lebron fan at all but i love Kobe. But come on a 98 is too much. Wade should be a 94 95, Bron a 96, Kobe a 96

  • http://www.tampax.com doyouwantmore

I can’t remember who said it, but a long time ago someone told me that Mike Brown’s problem isn’t that he’s stupid, because he’s a really smart guy. It’s not that he doesn’t get along with players, because he’s a good guy who relates well to them. It’s not that he’s too tough or too soft…He just has zero imagination. I don’t think he can close his eyes and picture anything other than the inside of his eyelids.

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

Did I say he was the most efficient player? I have never once called Kobe efficient. He’s about 1 more made bucket a game from being effecient. Terrible I know. Pau was never said to be the 1st option. Kobe and Pau pretty much split takes for the first half of the season. Then Pau’s huge pus*y came out to shine and Kobe decided 1st option was a mans job and took over like he always had. When a dude has won 5 rings you really need to quit talking ish about him not being able to win because it really really sounds moronic.

  • http://Nba.com GP23

@Tae.. Well, since LeBron is the best player in the world, 2k sports had to at least make him the best in a video game aswell. Yeah 98 seems a little high, but as long as Jordan is a 99 or 100 (which he probably will be) then im cool. I heard the my player mode is epic this year..

  • http://cnbc.com JTaylor21

Well, in the grand scheme of things and in a 82gm season, “1 more made bucket” is huge. Also if I remember correctly, PGasol was on fire during the first few weeks but slowed down a little bit to his normal offensive output but I wouldn’t say “his huge p*ssy” came out, well excluding the playoffs (same goes for every other laker)

  • http://Slamonline.com nbk

Lakeshow Kobe is the number 1 scoring option but he isnt who the offense runs throigh, and really only was for 3 seasons of his whole career. The offense goes through the post, and everything happens after that. And more times then not it started with Gasol Or Bynum, then eventually Kobe stops the progress for his own offense. There is a difference, The 80′s Lakers ran through Magic Johnson, but Kareem and Worthy are the “1st options” (it changed over time). Same concept IMO

  • http://www.bulls.com Enigmatic

What’s Derrick Rose’s rating? Is he finally in the 90s? I think he should be about a 91, 92.
98 sounds right for LeBron. I mean, hey, hate him or love him, dude is a beast and can do it all. And 2K has traditionally made whoever they felt was the best player at the time a 98 or a 99.
Although it would be hilarious if they somehow figured out a way to make his overall rating plummet to like, 70, in the 4th quarter of big playoff games.

  • http://cnbc.com JTaylor21

Well, as long as it rises to like….110 vs the Bulls. Sorry, I couldn’t resist.

  • Everynowhere

@enigmatic…lebron can do it all except be lebron in the nba finals. i feel as though 2k rated him too high because lets say that the nba season starts next year and lebron has developed a post game. would that make him a 99 now?

  • http://www.bulls.com Enigmatic

    ^ Well played.

People who say Kobe will not feed the post are wrong. They bring up Shaq and how Kobe didn’t feed to Shaq. When Kobe was young he was mainly about getting the stats. You could see it happening in the 2001 playoffs when Kobe took the Lakers to the Finals then Shaq handled the rest. Kobe beat the Spurs and Kings basically by himself. Once the playoffs ended and Kobe realized the Lakers could win with him scoring 35+ , he started to demand the ball more. But at this stage of his career, he’s all about rings. The best way to win is playing through the post and Kobe will feed it to his bigs if he wants them rings.

  • robb

    speculations are lame.

  • mark

Browns idea sounds good. You have an aging Kobe. Kobe has always been known as a troublesome person to have on the team but on the other hand he has brought Los Angeles 5 championships. What we saw in the playoffs last year will not get Kobe a sixth title so why not give Browns offense a shot. The lakers still have two 7ft. players in the front court. The lakers always play best when it is not Kobe VS. the opponent.

  • http://slamonline.com Tae

Idk wat Rose is yet. Im gonna check

  • slamfan4life

  • http://slamonline.com D.

Yeah, so really all Brown is saying here is “I have post players with offensive skills, unlike in Cleveland”. If I were him I’d be crowing about now having a second and third option on the floor, and in the post to boot, too.

  • angus

kobe wouldnt throw the ball to shaq on the block, why would he throw it to a couple chumps?

i can’t believe people are still arguing between Kobe and Wade. Kobe had his time people. Everyone knows the league robbed him of the NBA’s first team. I mean look at last year’s number: Wade: 25.3 6.5r 4.5a 1.5s and 1.2block shots on 50% from the field. Now Kobe has 25.1 4.9r 4.6a 1.2s .2b on 45% from the field. Guys, the last couple of years showed that Dwyane Wade is at the top of the SG world.

  • http://www.kb24.com The Seed

Kobe plays to win the game and he will still get his the question is Lakers need HOWARD.

  • JZ

Brown will get them to the finals, he is about winning and so is Kobe. Brown had a rebellious ass hole in cleveland. The man is no dummy.

I’m cool with Lebron at 98, but his clutch ratings gotta be at like 30.

  • robb

@The Seed the Lakers need CP3

  • MLK4Life

Who cares? During his exit interview, Kobe said he’s going to shoot the ball and Pau will get his touches after Andrew expressed that he may want to have more shots. So that’s how it will go. Andrew is their defensive anchor. Kobe will shoot. And Pau will get his touches. Also as to 2K12, I don’t care about LeBron or D-Wade’s rankings. Dirk has to be in the 90s this year. He was 84 last year.

  • add

makes sense, i remember last season when kobe would try to put the game on his shoulders and the lakers kept losin. he’s still the best player on the team but they definitley have to use more of their offensive weapons instead of just always relying on him.

  • MLK4Life

With Kobe being healthier than he’s been in years, I think we’ll see them use Pau and Andruw more at the beginning of the season so that when the playoffs come around, Kobe will be able to take over games if he needs to.

  • timmyhoops

I cannot comprehend how the new lakers coach could talk about offense and not mention KB 24? As likable as a guy as he is the Gasol-Bynum experiment WILL NOT work for this team. His reference to San Antonio? He did not have a wing player like Kobe in San Antonio. He didn’t have a wing player like Kobe in Cleveland!! He needs to rethink his offensive plans. What’s his contract length anyway?

  • Hambone

Yeah and Ferrari are building an electric car too

  • asdf

@u kno that hes was the coach of the year. On top of that with cleavlend.

  • evadne reid

how many rings does mike brown have? none, iam behind the man with 5,mike brown might be leaving L A QUICKER THAN ANTICIPATED

  • rich

rose is a 92 btw dont complain ppl its a good rating considering his passing rating and 3 point shooting. kobe is low because he shot abysmally from 3 pt range and his dunking is low. maybe when he stops playing with that tampon on his finger he will b able to shoot properly

  • http://www.slamonline.com Max

Where can u find these rating for 2k12?

  • MLK4Life

Mess up your finger the way Kobe did and then you can say something against him wearing the protection on it.

  • vancityBball

sure coach brown can SAY that kobe wont be getting his… but lets actually see it work out, if so id have a lil more respect for the lake show

  • wendy storey sahagen

How about focusing on ODOM/Gasol. Let Bynum go in a trade for Chris Paul.
