Cavs Owner Dan Gilbert’s E-mail to Stop Chris Paul Trade to Lakers

From the bumbling creator of the Comic Sans fiasco when LeBron took his talents to South Beach, comes yet another poorly thought-out missive. Yahoo! Sports grabbed the whole thing, when it was leaked:

“Commissioner,

It would be a travesty to allow the Lakers to acquire Chris Paul in the apparent trade being discussed.

This trade should go to a vote of the 29 owners of the Hornets.

Over the next three seasons this deal would save the Lakers approximately $20 million in salaries and approximately $21 million in luxury taxes. That $21 million goes to non-taxpaying teams and to fund revenue sharing.

I cannot remember ever seeing a trade where a team got by far the best player in the trade and saved over $40 million in the process. And it doesn’t appear that they would give up any draft picks, which might allow to later make a trade for Dwight Howard. (They would also get a large trade exception that would help them improve their team and/or eventually trade for Howard.) When the Lakers got Pau Gasol (at the time considered an extremely lopsided trade) they took on tens of millions in additional salary and luxury tax and they gave up a number of prospects (one in Marc Gasol who may become a max-salary player).

I just don’t see how we can allow this trade to happen.

I know the vast majority of owners feel the same way that I do.

When will we just change the name of 25 of the 30 teams to the Washington Generals?

Please advise….

Dan G.”

A lot of talk about players and owners, nothing in between? what about management, whose job it actually is to assemble teams? San Antonio aint a huge market, they have good management, they win. This is very simple. Dan Gilbert needs new management. At what point does it become normal that the guy in the warehouse dictates contracts and profits with the CEO? This is why we have management in between, to manage sh*t. If your trucks don’t run on time, we don’t bring the whole parcel industry to a halt. A company that manages their sh*t better picks up the gaps.

  • Thomas

Kobe will probably score 60 the next time he plays the Cavs.

  • gubbins

He should write a letter to David Stern dated 3 to 4 years in the future, calling to ban the trade of Kyrie Irving/whoever they land in 2012 when they inevitably leave for whichever team has a title in their sights. Then he can end up with nothing and just keep going through the same process every few years. I love to see smaller teams get better through keeping their drafted talent, but it isn’t always that simple or realistic. But then he is a trade genius – Mo Williams for Baron Davis was inspired. Idiot.

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

@ Justin: By free agency I really meant their own willingness to be traded.
But hey, by the same token, Chris Paul really isn’t doing anything wrong, right? This was a trade, after all. Nothing like what LeBron did… Right??

  • JB

“That $21 million goes to non-taxpaying teams and to fund revenue sharing.”

As if it’s the Lakers’ duty to be in luxury tax territory so that cheap owners like Dan Gilbert (and Donald Sterling) can collect the welfare. How dare Jerry Buss make a deal in which he won’t have to pay as much of the (now much stiffer) luxury tax! If you want a franchise tag, get it in the CBA. This informal franchise tag business (at Stern’s whim or behest of particular owners) is an absolute joke and how can it possibly be legally justified? The Lakers are giving up 2 all-stars! This ain’t no one-sided Ted Stepien giveaway that warrants league interference–it’s a totally legit, reasonable trade. Make the rules and let teams try to be as good as they can be or avoid luxury tax. Lakers are within the rules and did nothing wrong. If they are stuck with two players who know they were traded. This consequence alone damages the Lakers and it’s not right.

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

@ neaorin: Did you not see what the Hornets get in return?? They get BETTER even without Chris Paul! They were set to land Lamar Odom, Kevin Martin, Luis Scola, and Goran Dragic. That’s a freaking starting line-up right there, one that could make some noise with the right coaching–and almost a sure-fire playoff team. Three of those guys are All-Star caliber players, while Dragic is a young prospect with huge potential.
That’s what they have trades for–so the teams involved can benefit mutually. The Rockets would have freed up some space for their young players and gotten a big they so desperately needed. That trade seriously could not have been any fairer, and the Hornets will NOT be getting a better deal than that–you can bet on that.

  • http://fivemag.de Speedy

So they attack the Lakers because they know how to make a deal (save luxury tax, get a new franchise player, don’t give up draft picks).
Every fan wishes that his franchise would act like that.

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

Did some of you guys just start watching basketball last year?? I don’t mean to sound snobbish, but people are acting like the Miami Heat are the first team ever to have 3 future Hall of Famers. The term “Super Team” doesn’t exist because there have ALWAYS BEEN TEAMS THAT GOOD, WITH THAT MANY STARS (OR MORE), IN THE F*CKING NBA. GET IT THROUGH YOUR THICK SKULLS. THE NBA ALREADY HAS MORE PARITY THAN MOST OTHER LEAGUES.
This sh!t is making me pull a Tarzan here.

  • shutup

I’m pretty sure none of those guys that woulda landed in NO were allstars and will ever be allstars, and this is from a fan of two of the three, I love Luis Scolas game and am sad that san antonio traded/passed on him, Lamar Odoms best chance of being an allstar was last year, in a smaller market and on a team thats not gonna win, i dont see him getting much shine. and lebron fulfilled his contract, begged for better players and didnt get it and left money on the table

  • furiousfunkfanatic

So Dan Gilbert is the new commissioner of the NBA?

Best real solution: Contraction of all loser-naysayer-sucker-teams beginning with the Cavs. A league with 24 teams should be fine!

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

I said All-Star *caliber* which all three undeniably are. That’s not even worth arguing. And I have no problem with what LeBron did, so you’re right about that.

  • A2

Co-sign with the Kyrie Irving comment. I mean, who the heck would wanna play for the Comic Sans Monster after this?!

  • BBaller

How many stars are there really? I mean we could do a top 50-60 for sure. Players that are the best at their profession in the world. Contraction seems to be the best solution for the NBA. Imagine if 5-6 teams were eliminated and those players went to legit BBall teams, competition would rise, the entertainment value would rise. It’s seems unrealistic to spread 50-60 elite players across 30 teams. I propose a 24 team comp where every team could have a “big 3″.Big question is which teams should go? Minny, Cavs,Kings,New Orleans, Bobcats, possibly GSW.

  • jimmer

Furiousfunk really hit the spot right there. If a team can’t manage itself it should be left to fold, pure and simple. That’s what happens in the real world. Now we seem to have a situation where talented and hapless idiots, like Dan Gilbert, are able to dictate the fortunes of men who actually possess a lot of talent, like Jerry Buss and Chris Paul. So the men who make the league money, by winning titles, selling jerseys etc, are told what to do by men who would check for a gas leak with a match. This is not right.

  • neaorin

Yeah, I did see what the Hornets would get – Odom who is already 32, and is not any help to a franchise who is years away from contending, Scola who is also 31 and still owed $40 million through 2015 (nice salary dump for Houston there), Kevin Martin who is supposedly in his prime and making second banana money to be a third banana player. Dragic is the only interesting piece for the Hornets in this deal. There’s a reason Houston would part with all three without blinking, just to get a 31 year old Pau Gasol. Rebuilding teams need three things: high draft picks, young prospects, and to clear salary – and if that’s the best deal the Hornets could find, their GM should be fired.

  • marc

the hornets are owned by the NBA..so it’s paid for by the other 29 owners.. so why can’t they cancel a trade where they’re taking more salaries to pay for? someone has to buy the hornets for this not to happen

  • neaorin

Oh and Dragic is a RFA after this season, not signed long term. So he either puts up good numbers on a bad team and gets rewarded with an outlandish offer from someone, or he doesn’t – and then how much potential are we still talking about after five seasons.

  • MikeC.

Since the other 29 owners own the Hornets, Gilbert is well within his rights to want to veto this trade. This really only highlights how ridiculous it is to have a team owned by nobody.

  • A2

The real question here is, who da frak are Stern/Silver/NBA Owners to SUBJECTIVELY decide a player’s value? I think a very rational argument can be made for the fact the Lakers would be losing the core of a two-time ‘chip winning team for possibly damaged goods!Isn’t this judgement call under a GM/Team President’s purview? There is literally no objective argument to be made against the trade!

  • Justin

Actually, it IS nothing like what Lebron did. Lebron didn’t make any public notions about wanting to play elsewhere like Paul, Stoudemire, and Anthony did. The problem I have with Lebron is quitting on his team (let’s face it, he quit) and then announcing his decision on TV like that. Doing it that way was a slap in the face to not just the organization but to the fans. Whatever though, there’s no point in beating a dead horse about the idiotic things Lebron does. Did Garnett and Allen have no trade clauses? If not, how does one allow themselves to be traded?

  • http://www.slamonline.com megatron

Bballer, why would you ever want to eliminate the gsw? Ive been to a couple games there, the fans are great and they are 10th in the league in attendance.

  • http://www.slamonline.com megatron

also I do agree with your theory of contraction in terms of competition and entertainment value, but with all of the jobs it would take away from people and the lost revenue to the local economy, its just not realistic.

  • http://www.slamonline.com PapaDuck

He will have trouble ever getting a star to come play for him. If he drafts another Lebron-like guy he will have trouble getting him to sign an extension unless he offers a deal like the one PuJols got in baseball (10 yrs 260mil)….. Players are friends with each other and they talk with each other all the time and he hurt a lot of players, so all the good players are going to boycott this dude. He will never run a successful team. This was a straight hater move.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Eboy

*In Butt-Head voice* “Uhh….you people are really stupid…huh, huh”

  • mike

This guys a jackass. I think we should just get rid of the cavs. Deny him ownership to anything in the nba. Big cities have the money to always have good teams that makes perfect sense to me. Okc mem and portland are few teams that are in smaller cities that do really well imo. Maybe their gms just know how to do their job

  • Mike Mihalow

While I agree with him, he’s definitely costing his team free agents.

  • aaabbbccc

Dan Gilbets the guy who cant have a superstar so now no one should. If he cant keep James there a kid who grew up in the area on his hometown team. Dan Gilbert is going to have to realize hes not going to keep any superstars on that team. Hes just mad that his team value dropped after james gave him the bird and left.

  • RIDGE

Dan, Lebron is in Miami now, and HE’S NOT COMIN BACK!!!! That’s a snake move, period.

  • http://slamonline.com jumpman3224

Regardless of if you think this deal would have made the Lakers better or worse this year, the fact that it was nixed sets a bad precedent and severly hinders the Hornets chances to build for the post CP3 era.

  • MAS

I don’t know why…but I thing Dan G has a point. The Lakers will end up with a good team one way (trades) or another (free agents) but at least try to shorten the gap between the 99% (Hornets) and the 1% (Lakers). A read some blog where Paul could end up in Golden State for Curry amd still flexible to get a Chandler for example. That at least works on paper.

  • EJ

Dan Gilbert is like a bitter ex-girlfriend

  • http://slamonline.com jumpman3224

@MAS: The crux of this shouldn’t be that the Lakers would get better (that is why teams make trades in the first place), it is that teams should be able to execute trades as they see fit for their best return. NOH has been planning for this situation for months and it shouldn’t be up to DG or Sternbot to step in and deny a team’s intentions. If they get a better deal than netting a first round pick, odom, scola and KMart I would be shocked.

  • marc

So instead Chris Paul is going to leave anyway and the hornets get nothing? Yea thats better

  • Dat Dude

wasnt it nixed because the league owns the hornets? so this actually sets the precedent for league owned teams only?

  • Lz – Cphfinest3

Gilbert is simply protecting his own interst and those of many other NBA GM’s most likely. I for one think this is good news for the NBA. The Washington Generals remark was spot on.

  • http://www.slamonline.com jumpman3224

@Dat Dude: That is certainly an aspect to it, but the Hornets have been working on this for a while and the NBA could have privately denied this before the fact. Also, from the information I’ve read on this to date it seems like Stern actually has the power to veto any trade but has never used it. Very fine line regardless.

  • Joe

Anybody else find it ironic that Dan G.’s move is making it easier for Lebron to get a title? Just sayin…..

  • http://www.slamonline.com jumpman3224

For those of you who think that the other owners voted this down, there was no vote. “Not true that owners killed the deal,” Tim Frank, a spokesman for the NBA, said in an e-mail. “It wasn’t even discussed at the board meeting. League office declined to make the trade for basketball reasons.”

  • feez_22

Chris paul is a pawn now until he leaves the hornets HIGH AND DRY in the offseason. isn’t that ironic?

  • Sam

Hang yourself Dan, you worthless douchebag

  • T. Brown

It is obvious from not only this email but Dan Gilbert’s various other comments and actions that Lebron did the right thing in getting his tail out of Cleveland. No one should play for that man… The only good that comes out of this is that people can see some of what Lebron had to deal with and will hopefully get off the man’s back for making the best business decision for himself and his family.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

The Lakers gutted their core to get a superstar point guard.
A point guard that several folks were saying might not be that good because of his knee injury.
And that is a Washington Generals move?
    I don’t get it.
Do we think the Hornets couldn’t trade Scola and Martin later to get picks from a team?
    Or Odom?
They went from a 7-8 seed with Paul to a 7-8 seed without him, and they have more pieces to trade in the future to get draft picks.
Nobody was trading a superstar for Chris Paul. Nobody was even trading an all-star for him.

  • Scoop

Dan Gilbert need to kill himself, he worry about somebody else.

  • http://www.kittywildeonline.com/ RunNGun

I wonder if Dan Gilbert wrote the letter to David OLAJUWON Stern in Comic Sans?

  • @DEKNOWZ

Dan Gilbert needs to be as far away from basketball as possible. How are you complaining about the Lakers GM KNOWING HOW THE F*CK TO DO HIS JOB?! Soon he’ll be coming down on NBA fantasy and 2k leagues!

  • http://SLAM Ski

I think Dan Gilbert is an a** h**** and, thats putting it mildly!
Just can’t forget the past huh Dan? He’s envious because the
Lakers are definitely a more business minded organization! The baby
is still dwelling over the loss of LJ! Dan and Stern drop dead!
You two surely won’t be missed.

  • Heals

If only they were at a neighborhood playground and somebody could just smack little DannyG in the face. He’d go home crying and everybody else in the neighborhood could go back to playing the game they way they always have minus the whiny new kid..

  • Fast

Gilbert is P.O.ed because he is a loser and continues to be out-thought. If this type of trade is such a financial fiasco, have a rule to stop it. This case by case intervention reeks of politics and greed.

  • neaorin

    WojYahooNBA Adrian Wojnarowski
As for Dan Gilbert email obtained by Y! Sports, timestamp shows he didn’t send to Stern until after 10 PM ET. Trade already had been killed.
