Corey Maggette Will Be ‘Focal Point’ of Bobcats Offense

Rejoice, Bobcats fans! Corey Maggette has been granted a license to shoot as many times as his heart desires. Oy. From the Charlotte Observer: “That was the word Wednesday from Bobcats coach Paul Silas, in his first public comments since the NBA and the players worked out a tentative labor deal. Silas said Maggette, a 12-season veteran, will be essential to filling the scoring gap left by the departures of Stephen Jackson and Gerald Wallace. ‘Corey has got to come through. He can be a 20-point scorer. He’s going to be the focal point of our offense,’ Silas described. ‘We’re going to rely on him to get it done for us, and he can.’ Maggette, a former Duke star, came to Charlotte in a draft-night trade involving the Milwaukee Bucks and Sacramento Kings. That deal acquired the lottery pick that became Bismack Biyombo. To make that transaction, the Bobcats had to give up Jackson (an 18.5 ppg. scorer) and reserve point guard Shaun Livingston. The Bobcats also had to accept the remaining $20 million-plus on Maggette’s contract. Maggette averaged 12 points last season for the Bucks, his lowest scoring output in 10 seasons. He fell out of Milwaukee’s rotation the last third of the season and was often asked to play out of position at power forward. That’s far removed from Maggette’s prime as a Los Angeles Clipper, when averaged 20 or more points in three seasons. Immediately following the late-June trade, Silas told Maggette he’d be penciled in as the Bobcats’ starting small forward. It’s clear Silas has set out to restore Maggette’s confidence.”

Like there was any other option. All he does is shoot.

  • RunNGun

LOL Like Chris Webber told Timberwolves GM, David Kahn… “GOOD LUCK!”

  • Jono

    Gonna be painful to watch…

  • Red

When Corey is the guy getting all the shots, that’s when u know your team sucks lol.

  • ben

Maggette has a better career FG% than Kobe and 0.01% less than Melo. He also is very good to get to the line, I don’t know why he is so unappreciated. Must be the clipper’s curse.

  • T-Money

ben: because that’s all he does. i’ll give you that he’s very efficient as a scorer because he gets to the line at an absurd rate but he cares very little about defense and sharing the ball. corey maggettee doesn’t make a lot of winning basketball plays on offense or defense.

  • manu

Good. He’s like a black hole anyway. Pass him the ball and you won’t get it back…

  • bike

Maggette has always seemed like an underachiever his whole career. The guy has freakish athletic ability and seemed to have all the tools to be a regular all star but he must have come up short on effort and/or attitude. Always wondered if he was one of those guys that could have benefited from another couple of years at Duke under coach K.

Maggette is a more buff version of Kevin Martin. Both of them are GREAT at getting foul calls. It’s amazing really.
But all they do is shoot. That is all they bring to your team, and even then, it’s not like Maggette is going to average 30 a game and carry your team like other chucking superstars.
It is amazing how often he shoots when he touches the ball. That’s why I knew the Bucks were in trouble when they had him and John Salmons on the same team. You cannot have two chuckers of that level on the same squad particularly not if Brandon Jennings is the point guard.

    is this a joke?

In related news, The Bobcats will be drafting Anthony Davis, Andre Drummond, or Harrison Barnes in 2012.

  • T-Mac

I agree, that he has always been undervalued. I think the Bobcats could surprise some folks this year and get the last spot in the East. Kemba Walker and DJ Augustine are gonna give defending PGs headaches. The front court should be decent as well if everyone plays to their caliber and the touted rookie Center is as good as advertised. Are biggest concern is SG!!! We haven’t had a good SG since the departure of J-Rich!

  • http://www.bulls.com Enigmatic

If that were to happen, it’d be worth it to have Maggette as your primary option for a season.
Although if they got Anthony Davis, that would render Biyombo pretty much useless.

The worst teams in the league next season are going to be Toronto, Cleveland, & Charlotte. — Then probably some combination of Minnesota, Detroit, & Sacramento.

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

Might as well. He’ll average 20-25 ppg, easily.
I bring this up a lot, but I once saw him score 18 points on 3/21 from the field. LOL.

  • MaxIsNative

I LOL’d at this. But considering he shoots 77% of the time he isn’t the focal point it was the correct decision.

  • http://slamonline.com datkid

    BETCATS I’m so so sorry

  • da real

I’m not mad at this. He is a scorer. Most guys that can average 20+ dont pass much. He has just always been on teams with other scorers. Im not saying I would give him 20 shots a game every night if i were paul silas, but if he does get them he will produce points. A lot of guys in the league would get 20 shots and still not produce, its not as easy as it looks

  • http://cnbc.com JTaylor21

Shouldn’t someone like Kemba Walker be the focal point instead of maggette?

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

Maggette has been the focal point of every offense he has ever played in, according to Corey Maggette. So Paul Silas was more or less, not ruffling any feathers with that statement.

  • http://slamonline.com Tae

Ben, dont EVER mention Cory comparing his game with Kobe and Melo, EVER. I dont care even if it was field goal %. Dont do that

  • http://nba.com GP23

Kemba Walker?????? Are they forgetting him or something!

  • Detroit Dave

I never thought MJ could be a worse GM than he was in Washington.

  • http://staticseth.blogspot.com/ Seth

Bobcats are gonna be bad this year. Real bad.

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

The Bobcats should be fired from the League. Either that or send them to Exile City. AKA Seattle. Give us a new GM up in the NW though cause Jordan is straight stupid at managing.

  • http://www.bulls.com Enigmatic

Would you change your name to BobcatShow?
    Or BobShow?

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

I think he would be the ShowCat

Jordan must be trying to suck really bad to get his overrated UNC chap Barnes. Corey is alright but would be better if he knew his limitations.

  • http://slamonline BossTerry

He looks like Xzibit (with short hair)

  • Yesse

Why they don’t just make Kwame their focal point?

Anyways i hope Corey will have a better season now if he is their go to guy.

  • nbaNw8

    the Bobcats are screwed

Those saying all he does is shoot, you think you’re making an argument why this is a bad thing or something when really this is a perfect fit. Charlotte is awful, truly awful, on offense. They need a guy who is going to chuck the ball at the hoop, get to the line 8-10 times a game and put up 20 points a night for them. Who cares if he doesn’t play defense, they have other guys that will do that. It’s not like they are playing for the playoffs, let alone a championship. As far as I’m concerned, this is a pretty solid match and really the only decision Silas could make.

Where can I get my season tics? Good lawd I’m so glad the league (Stern’s tenure and associates) want nothing to do with contraction. Keep the classics coming MJ; your on court resume may be etched in stone, but damn if I was playing my NBA 2k franchise and you were in the room with me I’d have to take the controller to the bathroom with me in order to guard against you ucking it up while I was gone…

  • http://www.bulls.com Enigmatic

LOL it should be MJandSilentBobCats cause MJ’s team won’t be making any noise this year.

  • http://www.slamonline.com house

@Heals: MJ would probably just plug his controller into your slot, best take the whole damn thing with you into the bathroom to be safe.

  • http://www.facebook.com/joe.l.brewer3 BlackPhantom

All these nicknames for Lakeshow sounds like some of Bobbito Garcia’s nicknames

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

    MJandSilentBobCats is perfect. Absolutely perfect.

  • http://www.facebook.com/joe.l.brewer3 BlackPhantom

Lol, yeah MJandSilentBobCats is pretty beast

  • Seven Duece

I know who I’m picking in the fantasy draft this year.

  • http://www.facebook.com/gametimeweezy Gametimeweezy

hell yea Maggette always was a nice 7- 8th round pickup in fantasy leagues, great for freethrow percentage!

  • Justin

So, Silas says this and MJ is a bad GM because of it. OK, I get it

  • John Peck

….anyone ever heard of Andrew Gaze?!?!?!?

  • http://www.optimabbc.be Max

BETCATS, I really feel sorry for you..

  • eZ

BreakingNewsForecast: “After a hectic start of free-agency, Michael Jordan’s Bobcats have just signed highly coveted free agent center Spencer Hawes to a 32M 4yr offer sheet”

  • eZ

Michael Jordan should hire Isiah Thomas as his GM. They are a perfect fit obviously.

  • http://nasteedunx.blogspot.com Nasteedunx

(Insert deity here) help us all…

  • anthony y

This is what I’ve been saying. Bad teams are bad teams cause they make bad decisions. It’s not about having more money, its making good front office decisions. How us letting Corey shoot 30 shots a game gonna get them anywhere but the lottery?

  • http://slamonline.com swagg

fact is that they are going to suck. Why not let the young guys get the touches so that they can get get comfortable during a bad year. Draft some more guys next year, hope you get a super star…..other words do what the Thunder did. Get a good nucleus of young guys and keep them together for a couple of years. At the least you can make them decent players than trade them

  • Mike

MJ is a terrible owner. he has to stop favoring carolina players, and go for talent, wherever it may be. he seems to think if people wear carolina or blue devil blue in their young days – it ll make them better players. what a dope.

  • Drig

So………any Bobcats fans here to feel sorry for other than BETCATS?

its about time!!!!!! a team gave him that chance Corey Maggette can SCORE who gives a crap about defense

  • Nick

    This cracked me up.

  • Mack

at this point Maggette is best suited to be an impactn swingman who could be your sixth man, he could come off the bench and get buckets if the starters are slacking
