Kenyon Martin Leaving China; Will Eventually Return to the NBA

After struggling to contribute, soon-to-be 34-year old Kenyon Martin has been freed from his contract in China, and will become an unrestricted NBA free agent. Well, eventually: “Kenyon Martin has severed ties with the Xinjiang Guanghui Flying Tigers of the Chinese Basketball Association, but will be unable to secure a FIBA letter of clearance to return to the NBA until the team’s season ends sometime in February or March, sources told Yahoo! Sports. The regular season runs through mid-February for Xinjiang, but the Flying Tigers expect to qualify for the playoffs, which could last well into March … Martin’s departure will assuredly set a precedent for some of the other American players – J.R. Smith and Wilson Chandler – pushing to leave China for the chance to rejoin the NBA. Aaron Brooks is content to finish out his season with Guandong and likely re-sign with the Phoenix Suns in March. Brooks is a restricted free agent. Chinese Basketball Association rules and player contracts had stipulated that NBA free agents could sign to play in China, but wouldn’t be granted the necessary FIBA letter of clearance needed to return to the NBA until the China season had been completed.”

    come to Portland K-mart!

  • add

denver lost so many guys to china

  • IAMORANGE4EVER

The Knicks 2.5 million dollar room exception has Kenyon Martin’s name written all over it. Kenyon Martin can bring that attitude to the Knicks like Anthony Mason did. Let’s do this K-Mart!

  • Cameron

Too bad they signed Baron Davis already

  • IAMORANGE4EVER

@Cameron yes, and the Knicks signed him for vet min, which is why they still possess their room exception for 2.5 million dollars. I’m glad I could share that knowledge with you you, after all, sharing is caring.

    @ Orange: Please no…

  • MikeC.

NY doesn’t need a guy that’s going to complain about minutes and disrupt the flow. A backup SF is more important than K-Mart. NY Post has the Knicks chasing James Posey. I’m pretty sure he had a fork in his back the last two years, so I’m not too excited about Posey. If he can still play tough D in spot minutes, then I’m for it. It’s not like any SF will be needed to play big mins behind Melo.

Balkman is fine as the backup small forward a big off the bench (not jared jeffries the imposter pf) is exactly what we need. But anyways dawg thats what you get for signing a contract in a communist country that is dead set on owning everything American.

  • fish sticks

Dude signed a contract. Only fair he stays there til he finishes it.

  • http://www.facebook.com/gametimeweezy Gametimeweezy

    ^^^ true

  • NATTY DREAD38

I will say this, I am LOVING what Jorts is bringing to the Knicks. He’s rough and he’s tough, and can bang down that 3. I SEE shades of Bill Laimbeer, when I see Josh Harrellson. I know, I know it’s just pre-season, but you can just tell this guy’s going to be special, just like Shump is going to be. Hell of a draft by the Knicks! Hell of an off-season too! I thought I told you, but I tell you again, the Knicks are back! The Knicks the Knicks are back! lol

December 22, 2011 SHERIDANHOOPS.com: The game itself was a dog, the Knicks winning 88-82 behind 12 rebounds from Tyson Chandler, an 21 points and eight rebounds from Carmelo Anthony. Beforehand, coach Mike D’Antoni indicated the Knicks may hold onto their $2.5 million room exception for a loooong time, which means Knicks fans may want to keep an eye on what happens in the Chinese Basketball Association playoffs in March.

Once Kenyon Martin’s now-former team, the Xinjiang Flying Tigers, is eliminated, Martin will be able to get the FIBA letter of clearance that will allow him to sign in the NBA. Throw him onto a team that already signed veterans Baron Davis, Mike Bibby and Steve Novak to knock down 3-pointers, and there might be sightings of that missing tunnel well into June.

Chris Sheridan also said the Clippers wouldn’t make the playoffs. To say that guys ability to analyze a basketball team is poor would be an understatement.

K-Mart would be an excellent addition to the Knicks…He can guard several positions (Kobe, LeBron, Duncan, et al.) on the court at the defensive end, and at the offensive end he can playing minutes at the 3, 4, and even some minutes at center when D’Antoni s going small. He’d be a great defensive boost off the bench, and will start when the Knicks rest either Amar’e or Tyson during the hectic schedule that is the compressed 66 game 2011-12 season. Here is to the Xinjiang Flying Tigers getting eliminated sooner, rather than later so Kenyon can get that Knicks jersey on.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

So you have not ever watched Kenyon Martin play, is what your saying. (He can guard 2′s and 3′s LMAO!! – He can play minutes at the 3 LMAOEH!!)

  • http://espn.go.com/blog/new-york/knicks/post/_/id/8108/the-2-5-million-exception-and-kenyon-martin IAMORANGE4EVER

Actually yes, he can. Kenyon can guard big shooting gaurds. In fact he did a good job guarding Kobe in the Western Conference Finals when with the Nuggets, but Karl had to put him back inside against Gasol and Bynum. Kenyon can defended LeBron too. As for the offensive end, when Karl went with a big lineup he’d use Billups at point, with Melo at the 2, along with a frontline of Kenyon at the 3, Birdman at the 4, and Nene at the 5. Bottom line, nbk, you continue to undress yourself with your own mouth and in the process you expose yourself as ignorant. It’s funny, because you’re so hell bent on sparing with me here at SLAM, YOU end up making yourself look like a CLOWN. You’re losing respect. Time for you to step your game up, and stop being such a calculator head. *honk honk*

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

HAHAHAHAHA – Kenyon Martin has literally never guarded a 3 or 4 as an assignment at any point in his career. You have NO IDEA what your talking about….. speaking of an ignorant clown.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

    a 2 or 3**

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

HAHAHAHAHAHA i am busting up laughing, seriously, that is the most ignorant thing I have ever read about Kenyon Martin in my life. omg. He has had 2 microfracture surgeries and your dumbass said he could guard Kobe and LeBron!?!?!?! LMAO HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH my side hurts.

  • IAMORANGE4EVER

Wow, nbk is digging himself a hole now. He just said Kenyon has never guarded a shooting guard or small forward. Ha ha ha! Funny how some people when they get emotional continue to melt down and make an idiot of themselves. In the end, I’ll stop picking on you…Have the last reply, nbk, and feel “productive.” LMAO!

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

There is actually proof of it. You can go to 82games.com and look back at the last 7 years of Martin’s career for proof. Foot in Mouth is a nasty disease. You should see a doctor.

  • IAMORANGE4EVER

And FYI calculator head, Kenyon came back strong from both those microfracture surgeries, and had the same amount of spring he had before the injuries. If you watched him play, you’d know that. Credit it to Kenyon’s hard work with strength and conditioning coach Steve Hess.

  • http://Slamonline.com nbk

Martin is a good player and great defender. But not on the perimeter. You don’t know what your talking Bout and it’s obvious

  • IAMORANGE4EVER

nbk, if you actually watched the 2009 Western Conference finals, you’d know that the series started out with Kenyon Martin guarding Kobe Bryant. You didn’t watch it though, which isn’t surprising, because it’s obvious you’re a calculator head stat boy. A bitter one at that too. Yes I promise, this is the last time I reply to you in this thread. After a while I simply have to stop feeding the troll, and that’s what nbk is becoming, a SLAM troll! LMAO!

  • http://Slamonline.com nbk

You mean he guarded him on a couple possessions lol, I watched every game of that series. Do you not understand what “he has never been assigned to guard 2′s or 3′s means?” obviously not. –

  • Ahmid

Listen nbk don’t waste your time talking people of lesser sports intellect. We both know kenyon has never defended a gaurd out side of playing a zone defense. Adding kenyon for toughness is not a good reason to sign him. We have Davis, Melo, Amare and Chandler. That’s tough! I’m not against signing him, but I just don’t have the confidence in landyfields. Buy yet I feel like we are Championship bound barring an injury. Ijs
