Report: Knicks Working on Deal For Jamal Crawford

They’ve already waived Chauncey Billups and signed Tyson Chandler and Mike Bibby, but it appears the Knicks are not done wheeling just yet. According to the NY Post, they’re attempting to set up a three-team deal that’d bring former Knick Jamal Crawford back to the Big Apple: “The Knicks and Hawks were in active discussions today on a three-team sign-and-trade deal that would bring combo Jamal Crawford back to the club, according to an NBA source. One source said the trade has a better than fifty-fifty chance of happening. The Warriors are the third team involved in the talks. Knicks guard Toney Douglas, a native of Atlanta, has been included in one scenario of the talks that began yesterday. Crawford is one of the hotter free-agents available but the market hasn’t been as strong as expected for him. The Knicks only have their $2.5 million mini exception available to offer in a two-year package – which Crawford would not accept. In the sign-and-trade proposal, there’s a chance Crawford can clear over $5 million per season. The Knicks will announce the signing today of another Hawks guard Mike Bibby but view him as a backup.”

This would be amazing… absolutely amazing

  • rob stewart

    beware, Crawford is getting old.

  • IAMORANGE4EVER

Wow, what an off-season for the Knicks front office. Glen Grunwald, Mark Warkentien, and Alan Houston are working well together.

jamal and carmelo?? have fun STAT if u want the ball ur gunna need to get a lucky rebound off Tyson Chandler… it doesnt matter if jamal is 6th man again and carmelo is starting, AmarE isnt gunna get the touches he needs.. Chicago should have signed JC instead of RipH (all do respect)

  • http://www.nyill.wordpress.com Enigmatic

    Damn it.
I really want this guy to go to the Bulls but looks like Jerry “I’ll go over the cap for the right pieces (sike)” Reinsdorf is going with the cheaper alternative of getting Rip with veteran minimum over signing anyone to MLE.
As for Knicks, I don’t see this working with Melo, Amare and Crawford all being offense first, defense never type players.
Chandler was a great addition, but one guy can’t be the only one playing defense.

  • vctmac

i hope jamal heads to the bulls wher he will actually be an asset.
tho NYK looks nice jus aswell, he gna be a nice spark off the bench.
all these FA signings got me hyped up!!! the knicks shud even consider waiving douglas for nate robinson….

  • http://www.nyill.wordpress.com Enigmatic

Nate Robinson to NY again is probably not gonna happen.
Nate Robinson and O’Antoni hate each other’s guts.

  • http://nba.com GP23

Knicks could go for Allen Iverson now as their final piece for the season. And if they do, he should start ahead of Bibby.

  • Ash233

    Where is the defense??

  • http://www.nyill.wordpress.com Enigmatic

Iverson, Crawford, Melo, STAT and Chandler???
That lineup would score 130 a game.
    And give up 150.

  • http://nba.com GP23

Still, I would rather start AI over Bibby.

  • IAMORANGE4EVER

Rigo, those pesky Bulls of yours are going backwards this season. No number 1 seed. No ECF’s. Book it!

  • http://www.nyill.wordpress.com Enigmatic

I can see us not getting the number 1 seed. For sure.
But you thinking getting Chandler, Crawford and Bibby is gonna take y’all over the top is downright laughable.

  • http://www.facebook.com/joe.l.brewer3 BlackPhantom

Lmao “Score 130 and give up 150″

  • http://www.google.com/news BETCATS

New York is probably just picking names out of a hat right now or something. Doesnt sound like team chemistry is too much of a thought in this.

  • sunshine

wow seems like im not the only one who can see ai being a great fit for the knicks, a jamal crawford allen iverson backcourt would be legendary

  • MikeC.

I don’t know how I feel about this. He’s a good ball handler, but NY really needs a distributor.

  • Heals

GP, this isn’t a video game or the 5 years ago. Yeah that’d be a nasty array of talent, but teams gotta mesh. Sometimes less is more with elite teams because there’s only so many shots. Just look at Dallas and Chi, after their respective stars most other elite teams they play have the 2 or 3 next best players, but their collectives work better, harder, more synchronized…

  • MikeC.

A Crawford AI backcourt would be legendary. For lowest field goal percentage and for getting murdered on the bus by the frontcourt.

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

Crawford was my favorite player on the Knicks a few years ago, when he and Zach Randolph were playing extremely well, and would have brought the Knicks to the playoffs; but of course, Donnie Walsh traded Zach Randolph for Tim Thomas (really?!), and Crawford for Al Harrington, to clear cap space.
Not sure how I feel about this now, though. The Knicks need a real point guard–not this combo guard nonsense, unless they expect him to play at the 2. And they need defense, not another offensive spark. I say keep Douglas, who is actually a very good defender.
The Knicks should have kept Chauncey Billups… How stupid was it to pick up his player option, then amnesty him when you have to pay him anyways!?!?! He’d be perfect for this team–now the Knicks are stuck looking for a point guard. Stupid stupid move.

  • http://cnbc.com JTaylor21

3 me-first players that are average passers on one team?

  • IAMORANGE4EVER

JTaylor, keep hating. We’ll see who has the last laugh… :)

  • http://nyill.wordpress.com/ O

Enig is HATING on my Knicks!! LOLOL. He’s right though, this is an unnecessary aign-and-trade for the Knicks. We need a point guard, not another scorer. I just wonder if this means Crawford would start or be a 6th man. Either way, our defense is gonna suck again…

  • sunshine

jamal crawford can run the point better than most, people need to stop thinking point guards have to be pass first, its 2011, derrick rose is a scoring point guard and he was mvp last year, there is nothing wrong with scoring point guards, catch up, its no longer the 1950′s, and people need to stop being so scared of having too much talent, there is nothing wrong with having more than 1 scorer on your team, think outside the box

  • IAMORANGE4EVER

NEW YORK FCKN CITY! GO KNICKS!

  • EtheKnickFan

Craw my boy but we dont need this.

  • EtheKnickFan

are they trying to stack up players, in this short season, for some type of blockbuster trade?

  • T-Money

be careful what you wish for knicks fans. crawford doesn’t pass and NEVER goes to the rack. he’ll shake his defender and pull up. everytime.

  • A-Money

daaaamn, people are forgettin’ about my man Landry Fields.. Solid defensive player, good shooting range and 3rd best rebounding guard in the league, ahead of kobe.. he should def. start at the 2.

  • shutup

i could see them using him off the bench as their spark like coach use to use Barbosa, thats the only way this makes sense, but they would still need a pg

  • underdog

Billups is gone, so if they trade Toney Douglas, who’s going to play PG for them besides Bibby? Someone has to pass the rock to Melo.

  • eZ

I called for d stevenson in another threat, i think his d and his 3′s will be great for ny, but somebody else called him a loose cannon personality wise. Any thoughts on this?

  • eZ

Btw crawford should sign with the nets together with dhow.

  • IAMORANGE4EVER

^ Although a source thought it had a better than 50-50 chance of happening, one person familiar with the Knicks thinking said they will NOT include guard Toney Douglas, a native of Atlanta, in a Crawford package, which would seem to lower the chances of this going down.

  • http://slamonline.com cold as ice

im really excited about the chandler trade..i was upset with the way they handled the billups situation. but from a business perspective i understand. we soldified our frontcourt. melo,a’mare and chandler sre gd rebounders. now the frontcourt is what has me a lil worried. mike bibby is clearly here for the backup pg position. and most likely aout of respect fot mike woodson and the fact is pops played for ny. but i would have seen if billups would havetook a paycut along with stat an melo to acquire chandler. now crawford… mr.shake n bake…i like the fact he can be a 6th man for us. fields startin craw 6th man. cool. but not at the expense of toney douglas or iman shumpert. unless the knicks can find a way to acquire cp3,dwill hell even the pg who wanted to come here. b.jennings(young$)!!! but now it reminds me of the knicks when we had childs and ward. a center an no pg. so yea we might be able to get a chip. but multiple championships wont happen w/o 1 more piece. no tony parker,no ramon sessions, maybe nash at the expense 4 bibby. no mo williams. and 1 more thing. these guys are either in their primes or gettin there. so we need young pieces to buld off of. dont trade all the eggs in the basket because we dont have much or any picks left. unless dolan is gonna keep buyin em’

  • meloman2.0

I would love if the Knicks picked up Pietrus

  • http://slamonline.com cold as ice

1 more thing allen iverson wouldnt be a bad signing. better than grant hill, baron davis, ramon sessions, and any other old or not ready yet player. he needs a ring. a.i desreves 1 more then half the league.

  • http://www.slamonline.com megatron

the knicks will be fun to watch but they are out of their mind if they think they are going to win a chip by stockpiling one-dimensional players

  • charliewinning

No no no no no no…oh yea NOOOOOO!!! Just when I thought the Knicks were moving in the right direction. He plays no D, & they need a passer. They need to fire D’Antoni too.

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

Can some explain to me why the Knicks let Chauncey go… When they have to pay his @ss anyways and are in dire need of a point guard? Considering he pairs up nicely with Carmelo Anthony and took the Nuggets to the WCF a few years back?
    ANYONE?!

  • http://www.nyill.wordpress.com Enigmatic

Cause they wanted Tyson Chandler and couldn’t afford both Chandler and Billups.

  • http://www.nyill.wordpress.com Enigmatic

I’m reading this deal is dead anyways.
    Crawford wants more $$$

  • Teddy-the-Bear

But aren’t they paying Billups anyways…?

  • Nicki

Knicks needed a true center. I loved Chauncey, but he is 35 and banged up. So signing Chandler was the best move since we haven’t had a center in forever. And, while I like Crawford for his ball handling skills, Douglas plays much better defense and when playing his true position can do damage behind the arc.

  • http://nba.com GP23

I just want to see Iverson in an NBA uniform this season..

  • http://www.nyill.wordpress.com Enigmatic

Billups was waived under the amnesty clause so his contract no longer counts towards the Knicks salary cap.
And my limited knowledge of the new CBA would cause me to ask someone with more knowledge to please explain it better lol

  • http://knicks.com Gametimeweezy

    cosign Nicki

  • http://nyill.wordpress.com/ O

@ Enig and Teddy, even though the Knicks are still paying Billups, like you said, it doesn’t count against the cap. Had they NOT waived him, they’d be WAY over the cap and wouldn’t have been able to offer Chandler the money they did. NOW, when teams bid on Billups, the highest bidder wins. For argument sake lets say 4 mil is the winning bid. The Knicks would have to pay the remaining 10 mil on his contract. If no one bids, then Billups is a free agent and WILL sign with Miami. I hope you right, Enig, and the deal for Crawford is dead.

  • Teddy-the-Bear

Ohhh, so that’s how it works. Thanks Omar (and Rigo).

  • http://www.tumblr.com Arthurissupreme

the knicks do not need another scorer. We have a good team heading into training camp. if we needa make a move we have until the trade deadline

  • RunNGun

The Knicks could use another chucker. 5h!t, in D’Antoni’s system, who cares about defense? You just have to score a ton a points (more than your opponents too, of course).

  • DJ MBENGA

    This idea es no bueno

  • Drunyce

I always find it comical to read these internet GMs passing their opinions off as facts. Having good team defense is about energy, Effort, & communication (“playing on a string”). Not how many elite defenders you have. The Knicks currently lack scoring off the bench. They struggled to score when Stat/’Melo were resting. They could use Crawford’s 6th man act in NY. D’antoni has one more year to prove he’s serious about attention to detail on the defensive side. He’s been talkin’ about it, we’ll see.

  • http://www.slamonline.com megatron

Drunyce, are you trying to say that jamal crawford is going to be a good defender? or the knicks might be a good defensive team? cause neither of those things are going to happen. Elite defenders are, well.. elite, because they put in energy, effort, and communication on defense.. I just think that the knicks will not be able to stop anybody and they will never win a ring if they keep stockpiling players that only play one half of the game.

  • Drunyce

You obviously lack reading comprehension. The point was you DON’T need elite defenders to have a good defensive team. I already stated what Crawford would bring. Also, the knicks are making an effort to get better on the defensive side. Whether it works or not, who knows? but to talk as if your opinion is absolute is moronic.

  • http://www.slamonline.com megatron

like you said, elite defenders are willing to put in energy, effort, and communicate. Im saying that melo, stat, jamal, and bibby wont do those things. This is a combination of unwillingness to do so and lack of defensive talent. I understand your point that you don’t need a team full of defensive stoppers to be a good defensive team but what you do need is a team of players that possess a combination of desire/willingness and defensive capabilities. Im saying that the Knicks do not have that.

  • http://www.nyill.wordpress.com Enigmatic

Sure, you don’t need a bunch of elite defenders to be a good defensive team.
But you need your players and your coach to at least give a sh*t about defense and as of right now, only Chandler, Shumpert and Douglas do.

  • http://knicks.com Gametimeweezy

Knicks will surprise ppl this year on both ends of the court… can’t wait till we see Miami

  • AdrianYJ

The Knicks definately have the best front court in the NBA. Not only about sizes, but speed as well. Which PF and C combination can move faster than Amare and Tyson? I dont think there are, even DH12… only 1 person to stop 2 persons or may be 3……….

I think the PG position is very very important. SG… can be cover by Landry Fields / Iman Shumpert. Let the rookie contribute, let them fight for that SG post. The Knicks will be good. For PG, having Bibby is not good enough…

  • @boweezy24

I Think It Would Be Better To Have A Pass First Type PG! Then Have The Scoring PG Come Off The Bench.
