Kobe Bryant Enjoying Proving Critics Wrong

by Marcel Mutoni @marcel_mutoni

Everyone thought they saw the signs coming: Kobe Bryant’s numbers were headed downward, he was getting up there in age, his body racked by an endless amount of debilitating injuries, he had to deal with a new coach and system (which was supposed to begin tilting towards the team’s two big men), an uneven team, and there was even talk from some corners that LA was about to become a Clippers town.

Kobe Bryant’s gradual downfall seemed inevitable to all. All but Kobe Bryant, it seems.

The 33-year old future Hall of Famer turned the clock back last night against the Phoenix Suns, dropping in a season-high 48 points to lead the Los Angeles Lakers to their third straight win. Afterwards, Kobe took great delight in reminding the doubters just how wrong they have been about him.

From the LA Times:

Kobe Bryant wants you to say he can’t do it anymore. He’s too old. He’s played too many minutes. He’s too hurt. He shoots too much. After scoring an NBA season-high 48 points on 18 of 31 shooting in the Lakers’ 99-83 victory Tuesday over the Phoenix Suns, Bryant asked a reporter to tell him to his face he can’t consistently replicate such an effort through the rest of the Lakers’ (7-4) 55-game season. Even if he strung three 30-point plus games in the last four all on a torn ligament in his right wrist.

“Not bad for the seventh best player in the league,” Bryant said in a shot at the ranking a panel of ESPN writers gave him this offseason.

Kobe didn’t just have his critics in mind last night; the Black Mamba also let it be known that his long memory recalls the pain of past Playoff defeats at the hands of Phoenix: “I don’t like them,” Bryant said of the Suns. “Plain and simple, I do not like them. They used to whip us pretty good and used to let us know about it and I. Will. Not. Forget. That.” Even though most of the guys from that team are gone? “I. Don’t. Care,” Bryant said. “I won’t let it go.”

Kobe Bryant is now the League’s second-leading scorer at 29.5 points a game, and shooting 46% from the field.

Many still don’t consider the Lakers true title contenders this season, but Kobe is determined to prove us all wrong in that regard as well.

Taylor, You root for the Heat. Your favorite player is LeBron… Your a Heat fan. I don’t know why you, nbk, and Allen P don’t want to label yourselves as Heat fans. I don’t know what else you call a fan of the Heat other than a Heat fan.

  • chingy

I think Kobe came to the realization that his team cna’t win a chip this year so he’s going into eff you mode and just trying to score as many points as he can.

  • http://slamonline.com The Philosopher

    The King is still better.

  • http://Slamonline.com nbk

I have never in my life rooted for any teams other than the 90s Bulls and Suns. Everything you have an opinion about in your life Lakeshow is something your a fan of? Dumb

  • http://cnbc.com JTaylor21

Always been a fan of players never of teams.

  • http://google J-Ro

Co-sign nbk, it will be a loooooong day. Jamal Crawford can go for 50 any day too, and its not like he’s going to b*tch about his ESPN ranking.

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

So you don’t care if the Heat win games Taylor? nbk, not everything you have an opinion on your a fan of, but everything that you have some stock in or that you’d like to see succeed your a fan of. You all would like the Heat to succeed and win the chip this year. If it’s Bron that makes you a fan of the Heat that’s fine, but your a fan of the Heat. There’s nothing wrong with being a fan. If you want to be “un-traditional fans” that’s fine, but your fans of the Heat. At least IMO. J-Ro, if Crawford did that we should be giving him props. He didn’t though, Kobe did(almost). Crawford has 3, 50 point games. Kobe has 25. So “Jamal Crawford can go for 50 any day” doesn’t really work.

  • NastyTyler

    ^cosign.

  • Maniac

Lol LakeShow it’s not even worth it man. We’ll revisit this next month when Kobe is still ballin. Smh

  • http://Slamonline.com nbk

I don’t give a damn if the Heat win the title. I predicted they would but If they don’t, I’m wrong and I move on. I couldn’t care less.

  • http://Slamonline.com nbk

So when I had the Lakers winning the title at the beginning of last season I was a Lakers fan. Gotcha.

  • Mburb321

Nah NBK the way you consistently defend/praise Bron lets me know you have some investment in the heat, the two go hand in hand.

  • Dan

he would prove his critics wrong if he’d pass the ball down low more often

  • Mburb321

Predicting who wins and rooting for who wins is two different things, last year you may have predicted the lakers were going to win but u were prob rooting for miami because u love lebron.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

I like a lot of teams to be honest. Memphis, Philly, Indiana, Miami, hell even the Wizards.
Mainly I’m a fan of basketball. But, it’s whatever. Y’all have a good evening.

  • http://Slamonline.com nbk

There is a pretty obvious reason. Nobody notices the amount of irrational Kobe support, and (from the same people a lot of times) irrational LeBron hate. You see anyone call LeBron a top 20 player all-time (as absurd imo as those calling Kobe top 5)? Or compare him to Jordan? Or say anything other than “he’s the best player in the league today”? You see anyone defend LeBron’s horrid performance in the 4th last night? No? To all of the above? Hmm what reason would I have to argue with someone about LeBron? Did u read the irrational “I told you so” “Kobe’s the best in the league still” yada yada?

  • http://slamonline.com Kap

Three key reserve players were missing last night so him taking alot of shot and going off is justified. He has a lot of pep in his step this year. That procedure in Germany could actually be a bigger deal than we thought. This team is also another perimeter playmaker/scorer away from being the favorites out West while I do believe this team as is can get to the Finals. Don’t know if they can’t beat Miami but they stand a good chance against everyone else.

  • http://slamonline.com datkid

    I’ll admit I’ma heat fan… but whatever.

  • Maniac

What’s wrong with Kobe being top 5? IMO the only guys in history that are definitely over Kobe are probably Russell, MJ, & Wilt. And anyways nbk you will find any reason to down Kobe so whatever.

  • http://Slamonline.com nbk

Yup, saying Kobe isn’t top 5 is Downing him. Makes perfect sense.

  • http://Slamonline.com nbk

Show me where I’ve actually said something negative Kobe other then he’s selfish.

  • http://www.kb24.com The Seed

Wow, people stating Kobe shoots alot is like saying MJ never shot at all. People MJ used to shoot his teams out of games, his teammates complained about getting shots. Its funny I watched countless games of MJ just shooting to get 30 points a game. MJ once stated that he tries to get 8 points a quarter to end up with 32 points or more a game. So MJ is selfish right. Its funny, dude is 33 years old his team is winning with a subpar bench and a 50 year old point guard and people still hating. Just celebrate his career and his accomplishments. He is the only player in History to lead a team to 2 rings with out another Hall of Famer on his team. BOOK IT!!!

  • Allenp

So you are certain Pay isn’t going to the HOF?

  • http://www.slamonline.com Nick Tha Quick

^^^ It doesn’t bother me when dudes like JT and nbk blindly hate on Kobe and/or the Lakers and will ALWAYS find something to degrade said person/team about, even when the thing they find is as trivial as the jaw-jut. I can live with people being fans of their fav player/team and having to hate rival player/team. It sports. What bothers me is their refusal to admit that they just plain hate his guts for no particular reason. Instead, they want to claim that they hate selfish basketball or hate anyone trying to be like MJ or hate the same teams that keep winning it. Just come out and say it like Eboy. You just hate the dude. Simple. It won’t kill you. It won’t break anyone’s heart.

  • Showmeyourwits

I agree that Kobe is selfish, but that’s why I’m a fan of his. When the Laker lead dwindled to 1 in the 4th, he selfishly scored 16 pts to ice the game. Conversely, when the Heat lead evaporated in the 4th, Lebron unselfishly passed to his teammates to get them going, and unfortunately they didn’t get going and the Heat lost in overtime. Kobe’s usage rate isn’t sustainable, but Bynum and Gasol have to do more to establish their position and make it easier to get them the ball. Until that starts happening, Kobe is gonna keep chucking.

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

Nick tha Quick with the truth. Well Allen, what do you think? Should Pau be in the Hall of fame? He is borderline, but at this point I don’t think so.

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

    Showmeyouwits, 100% co sign.

  • Maniac

I’ll stick with Pau being borderline HOF at this point. We’ll see where his career goes. If the Lakers win another with him as the 2nd/3rd option then yes.

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

I agree that if he gets another chip or two in his career being an integral part of a team he should probably get the nod. If he retired today… no.

  • http://www.kb24.com The Seed

Pau is not going into the Hall of Fame, for winning two rings as a distant 2nd best player on Kobe’s Team. Pau is tradable and will be traded this or next. BOOK IT!!

  • http://breeze.com Breeze

I agree with Seed..you dudes must havent watch jordan games, ive seen games he took 8 shots shraight and miss at least 5. No knock to MJ but he is a scorer just like kobe they take shots. Respect game this dude is the harder worker, best footwork and has a high basketball IQ. Lets not even mention clutch and heart. That the Philospher thinks the king is better. The same king that was walking under pressure literally getting called for travel.Mamba !

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

    Thanks for that Seed… thankss…. …

  • Animalxxx13

Kobe is not HOF material, greatness is measured by the number of finals MVP and he has only gotten 1.5 haha

  • Spades

People always forget how terrible Kobe was on his own. Without a big man (or multiple big men) to back him up, Kobe looks like the most selfish player in the NBA those 3 and change seasons without Gasol. He missed the playoffs entirely one year and got kicked out of the first round twice. What was LeBron doing in that span? Getting to the Finals on his own with a bunch of D-Leaguers and repeatedly going deep in the playoffs. Also, Kobe’s FG percentage is horrendous.

  • Animalxxx13

Anyone who shoots 31 times in the league can get 40 pts or more

  • http://www.facebook.com/joe.l.brewer3 BlackPhantom

@Seed, Pau Gasol was a distant second option on the two Laker teams Kobe led? Give me a f*cking break, without Gasol we aren’t winning either series. Especially the series against Boston, he performed GREAT in Game 7, He was our main scorer other than Kobe, and Kobe went 6 for 20, only reason Kobe had 20+ points is because he got to the line. Gasol’s almost as important to LA as Kobe. Is Pau soft? Usually. But he has still produced when it mattered most.

  • http://SLAMONLINE.COM LakeShow

Shout out to BP. Your right on buddy. @animalxxx, Kobe shoots above the league average fg% wise. So no his fg% isn’t horrendous. It’s above average.

  • http://www.slamonline.com J

if pau continues to play at least at an all star level the rest of his career, he’s HOF’er. his accomplishments go beyond the nba a little more. no pau, no five rings for mamba. plain. simple. even kobe admitted that his teammates, most notably Gasol who lifted the team in game 7 of 2010 finals. (see press conference)

  • http://www.slamonline.com J

*lifted the team for the most part

  • http://Slamonline.com nbk

Y’all noticed Chris Mullin is in the HOF? Idk if Pau is a “hall of famer” but he sure is good enough to be.

  • http://www.kb24.com The Seed

    BLack Phantom
Pau had one great game 7, seriously. Pau did nothing against Howard in Orlando Series, Choke against KG 1st time around, did a little better against KG second time and he is HOFamer. So everyone that win titles plays good in NBA Finals goes to HOF. Come on, Pau as a number one option for Grizzles, choked every 1st round series for years. Come on man, anybody who thinks Pau is a HOFamer based off his career so far are homers. BOOK IT!!

  • http://obsessioncollection.wordpress.com grgeblck

YUP to Kobe! Kobe really and still proving that he is a selfish player. Oh ya but I understand, who else can he pass to? Trust yourself. lol.

  • RedRum

erm… how exactly is he proving critics wrong???? He shoots way too much with a very low scoring percentage 45%, in fact his eFG is the lowest of the whole starting lineup!!! I hate Lebron, but he has been playing great this year, he is scoring the same points as Kobe shooting an amazing 59%!!

  • http://anyoldthing Ugh

@BlackStar – Actually all those guys DID prove the critics wrong – they were all predicted to be great or HoF players and consistently proved they weren’t. (Critics critique, haters criticise.)

  • Allenp

    HOF includes international stuff.

  • Ali

a 66 game season, yeah it’s early in the season, but some people just don’t get it and never will. This guy is not your typical NBA baller, just playing night in and night out, like 80% of the league. He listens to the fans, haters and media saying he’s old and way past his prime. He plays with a dead serious purpose, EVERY GAME. And for the past 3-4 years people have said he’s old and over the hill, and each one of those years he makes alot if people retrack those words. So here we go again in 2012.

  • http://www.nba.com VanCityBBall

although i dont like Kobe very much i respect him and im man enough to say he really shut me up

  • Drig

nbk and JT21, Kobe got his shots off within the flow of his offense yesterday. If you see the last few games, he’s been getting off most of his shots through set screens or pnrs. He’s been the primary ball handler for this team no doubt and has been having a torrid time with TOs (which is why he’s rather coming off screens rather than dribbling the hell outta the ball courtesy of his busted wrist ). However, one thing that gets lost in translation is that Bynum and Pau did get shot attempts. They did tries. Even today vs Utah, they got touches. But they weren’t able to get into good positions quickly or consistently enough early in the clock to get the ball to them. Also, they seem to have lead feet right now……

Kobe’s been shooting a lot right now. vs Denver, it was uncalled for and plain stupid. vs Utah, GS, Phx or whatever team he’s played well, he’s been controlled. Tries to get the others going. If they do, then go with the flow before takeover ala Rockets. If they don’t respond, go and try to get the game back singlehandedly and establish the flow which will carry you to the win ala GS. ( Remember that Kobe did go back to team ball for the last 5 minutes of Q4. Early in Q4, he had problems reverting to Laker Ball from Kobe ball though. ) Or ride your hot hand like vs Phx.

  • Drig

BTW, I expect Kobe to tone it down near the end of the season or during the All-Star break.

The problem for LA has been that the games have been coming thick and fast. The bigs need more time to recover than Kobe. Hence in back-to-back games, you can see Bynum/Pau not looking sharp/not being able to hold positions etc. Hopefully, MikeB can manage the time (sit one guy out once McRob,TMurphy and Kapono come back for a game and adopt a rotation policy in heavy weeks :\ ) and keep everyone healthy.

Oh yeah, for the record, Kobe is shooting a lot. The only problem I’ve had with Kobe so far though has been the two games vs Denver and his ridiculous number of 3pt shots with his wrist. If all of Kobe’s attempts come in the flow or closer to the basket as a result of good passing, I don’t mind if he takes 50 as well.

  • http://Slamonline.com nbk

I am not complaining about what Kobe did last night. There is nothing to defend about it, it was awesome. Selfish, but that doesn’t matter. Getting mad at Kobe for being selfish would be like getting mad at a politician for avoiding the question. It’s that he can’t do that consistently. Especially over the course of this season. And the Lakers getting into the habit of relying on Kobe to bail them out this early in the year is risky. Too say the least. I as a betting man, given the evidence from less strenuous seasons in Kobe’s career (when he was also younger, if I have to point that out). It’s unlikely the lakers have a realistic shot at doing anything significant.
