Greg Oden’s Season Done Following Microfracture Surgery

Greg Oden’s star-crossed basketball careeer took another sad turn today, as it was announced that he won’t suit up this season at all. The Oregonian reports: “It’s the third time Oden has had microfracture surgery in his career, including the second on his left knee. The medical procedure officially ends any chance of the oft-injured center returning this season and raises doubt about whether he ever will play in the NBA again. ‘This is not the news we were hoping for Greg or the organization,’ Blazers President Larry Miller said in a release. ‘It’s hard to put into words the heartbreak for everyone involved, but especially for Greg. He’s a young man who has experienced a great number of physical challenges in his playing career and today is yet another significant setback for him. We have a lot of empathy for Greg and his family during this difficult time.’ It was the fifth knee surgery the 24-year old former No. 1 overall draft pick has endured during his time with the Blazers. He’s played in just 82 games over his four-plus seasons with the team, averaging 9.4 points, 7.3 rebounds and 1.43 blocks per game.”

Wow he makes Sam Bowie look like an elite athlete

Im pulling for this guy! If he gets back and stays healthy and lands a bench role, or a starting role with anyone it will be a great story on persistence, commitment, and desire. Come on big man!

  • Hay

That’s just so hard man.. Whatever the outcome of these “out of luck” series, hope he’ll be OK

3 micr-fractures, 2 scopes …that’s a lot for any young guy to have to bear. I mean, he’s spent almost as much time on crutches as he has on his feet in the last 4 years. I wish him the best — I hope he finds a way to turn his negative experiences in the NBA into something positive in the rest of his life.

Should retire and coach high school and work his way up to college, it’s only going to get worse. Fr health reasons it’s best to quit in my opinion.

  • Dungeon Family

    Portland really is Cursed

  • http://nyill.wordpress.com/ O

It wouldn’t be an NBA season without the annual season ending Greg Oden knee surgery. Poor kid…

  • anthony y

^^^lol..seriously though why have they not fired the whole “medical” staff? Trainer and all! Who have they kept healthy for a whole season..EVER! I’m not a real blazer fan but enough is enough. I hope Greg can find a way back to the floor at some point..maybe he should talk to Grant hill about how he stayed mentality strong. Poor kid..

  • AD

its time for greg oden to get a desk job smh

  • robb

I really admire this guy’s determination, but maybe it’s time to let it go. Sad, sad story.

Never been a fan of him as a person or as a player but it’s sad that he can’t get healthy, he would have been a great player but hey things turn out like this at times. Hopefully he’s staying strong & appreciating the chance to have still played in the pros.

  • LaguneroFan

    ^@red
dumbest comment i have read, in my opinion. you don’t even know the guy.
not a fan as an athlete okay, but as a person… i mean come on…

  • RKJ92

Ya I’ve been reading on this site for quite some time now and red’s comments are neither helpful nor are they in the least bit intelligent -.-

  • deafballer

At this rate, a bigger headline would be ‘Oden healthy for season’ not hating on the guy but damn this guy has had some bad luck.

  • http://anyoldthing Ugh

@anthony: Is there actually any way malpractice can *cause* a microfracture?

  • http://slamonline.com The Philosopher

After his knee basically broke in half in that game, (non-contact injury) I, myself, had a feeling that it was the end of his career.
As is such, he has good coin. He’s still supposed to be a multi-millionaire.
Go back to school. Get a degree. Do something. Do not continue to expose your loins to the masses…

  • http://www.nba.com VanCityBBall

IM SO SURPRISED. GREG ODEN WAS ONE OF THE MOST HEALTHY PLAYERS IVE EVER SEEN. THIS IS A SHOCK.. smh

  • Ronald

A microfracture surgery isn’t done because there is a fracture.

  • Tim

If livingston can come back, Oden may be able to. I hope any way, hate to see talent wasted.

  • Hulahula

Something awkward here…bill walton was playing on there and he had a knee injury like oden..is this a curse for blazers or what?

  • http://slamonline.com tealish

are you guys running the same story every year for the past 4 seasons?

  • AQWORD

YEAH. THEY JUST CUT & PASTE THE OLD ONES & ADD A NEW DATE. SLAM where Credit crunch stories happen.

  • Justin G.

For those of you that are saying enough is enough and maybe he should call it quits, do any of you honestly think you would quit trying? Personally, I’d keep trying until the doctors told me I had no chance to play again in the NBA. Then I’d try one more time

  • http://www.triplejunearthed.com/dacre Dacre

Justin – I’d be out there if I couldn’t bend my elbows or knees… and have to tape the ball to my palms… O_o

  • Fletch213

Time to hang up the shoes

  • BBaller

Really sad, i had such high hopes for this guy but a time comes when you just have to say” it’s over”.Could of been a dominant big the NBA needs but unfortunately it wasn’t supposed to be.

  • BBaller

idk if last post registered, but starting center for the West ALL STAR 2012 should of been Oden.

  • Paul H

In a sports world were AI garners sympathy for spunking the better part of 200 million dollars….THIS guy deserves sympathy. Never even had a shot.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Max

This aint news, the news would be; Oden will play again!
When he got drafted tho, I thought he could come close to what Dwight is..

  • Zack

He will never play again unless they send him to Phoenix, lol.

  • http://slamonline.com The Black Rick Kamla

just me or has this man had the 3 Stouges playing Operation on his knee for the last 5 years??? Either way praying for his recovery, I know its gotta be tough on him.

  • GC6

On the bright side he is still a multi millionaire unless he’s spent it all

  • steve

it does seem that it is a curse to be a big man drafted by the blazers given their history, whether it’s LaRue Martin in ’72 (who really just couldn’t play at that level from Loyola), Bill Walton in ’74(who actually had foot problems early in his career even tho he had knee issues in college), Sam Bowie with the 3rd shattered shin problem as a rookie (with 2 previous in college), now this with Oden again, and throw in outstanding 2 guard Brandon Roy’s premature early retirement due to knee probs. WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!! Not to make light of this but, what’s in the water in Portland?
