Kobe Bryant Expects Lakers Front-Office to ‘Tweak’ Team

Kobe Bryant, who says he’s “obsessed” with winning another NBA championship, anticipates that the Los Angeles Lakers’ roster will not look the same by the time the NBA trade deadline comes and goes. Per ESPN: “I’m sure they’ll do something,’ Bryant said. ‘They’ll tweak something. I don’t know what. But I’m sure they’ll do something. Here’s the distinct difference between what’s going on now and what went on in ’06-07: Back then, I didn’t think they were willing to spend the money to have us have a successful team,’ Bryant said, referring to his infamous trade demand when he said he’d rather ‘play on Pluto’ than return to the purple and gold. ‘I just thought they were going to sit on their hands and have me go out there and score all these points and generate revenue and just not spend any dollars,’ Bryant continued. ‘So, that was the issue that I had and I said if that’s the case and that’s what your philosophy is right now, just let me go. Let me go play someplace else then if that’s what you want to do, because I didn’t want to be a part of it. Now, I don’t think that’s the case. They obviously tried to pull the trigger on a trade that they thought was going to improve our team with CP and it just didn’t happen. But, that shows me that they’re thinking in the right direction in terms of doing things to improve our ballclub. So that’s why I’m not really tripping on it. We have to be patient and we have to make the right moves and I’m sure we will.’ Bryant balked at the chance to address specifically what roster moves would be necessary to fortify the Lakers’ championship aspirations, but he supported the approach made by Lakers’ management to improve the team. ‘The motivation is for us to build a contender,’ Bryant said. ‘It’s not to just kind of sit around and see what falls in our lap. That’s not the impression that I get from management at all, so I think that allows me to be patient. You can’t just rush into things and then you make bad decisions, you make bad choices, you’re locked into bad contracts. So, it’s important to be patient, make right choices and we’ll be fine.’ When pressed and asked if he would rather play with Orlando’s Dwight Howard or New Jersey’s Deron Williams, two players who have been linked to dozens of trade rumors this season, Bryant played along. ‘Give me both, how about that?’ Bryant said with a laugh.”

The way Kobe sees the game and what it takes to win Championships is totally different from the way his fans see it.

“I just thought they were going to sit on their hands and have me go out there and score all these points and generate revenue and just not spend any dollars.” – this should become the standard quote for any star who plays for a robert Sarver owned team (also known as the worst owner in the NBA)

  • LP

Its crazy when these stars talk about their team like the rest of them suck. Dwight and Kobe very disrespectful…i hope they move Bynum and Gasol for Sessions.

The thing is though LP, the rest of them DO suck! (Asides from bynum and pau) but I agree with you, and I often wonder if Kobe’s/Dwight’s team-mates are made to feel inadequate by their comments..I’m not sure I’d take too kindly to my teams “leader” suggesting I wasn’t good enough for him..At the start of the season Kobe was saying he believes that team can win a chip, interesting how quickly his confidence in that has diminished..

Lakers suck and Magic, they are going no where trade howard for bynum. Kobe and Howard know it. BOOK IT!!

  • bull22

what a crying shame, kobe got spanked last year by the dallas mavs and apparently is still seething over not getting another 3 straight titles,
he won championships with these guys for him to be a punk and throw them under a bus. no wonder bynum wants his own team and wants out.

  • Dungeon Family

@Bull22 shut yo lame ass up……….worry about the bulls They ain’t won a title since I was 15

  • Mario

For minute I thought he said Twerk Team…..I was like ????? They gon call up twerksum and Lady L

tweak = trade for dwight howard

Kobe has (not so subtly) said the Lakers need to make changes multiple times over the last couple weeks. (which I completely, 100% agree with) but Nobody is criticizing him for “throwing his team under the bus” – nobody is talking about him “whining to the media” or any of that. hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

Seriously, everyone who criticized Dwight, and sees what Kobe has been saying and doesn’t care, is a hypocrite. All of you.

Cosign Nbk, this is basically the same as what Dwight is doin. @Jtaylor, not sure what you’re saying there dude but im sure Kobe knows what it takes to win a ring, he has a hand full of em.

  • Maniac

I agree nbk. Every great player wants help, some just show it it different ways. As far as the Lakers, I’m not even so sure anymore that they are pursuing Dwight as hard as the media says. There’s a rumored trade going around that the Celtics are interested in swapping Rondo+pieces for Pau+pieces. I like that as a backup for no Dwight or Deron

  • IAMORANGE4EVER

It’s all about Kobe. Always has been.

  • Shem

Calderon for Walton, Barnes and 1st rounder

  • http://Slamonline.com Caboose

Don’t worry nbk, I dislike what Kobe is doing too. The only difference I think people would point to would be Kobe is asking for help, not asking to leave. Subtle distinction.

I hope to God the Lakers don’t trade for Deron Williams. Say what you want about Kobe complaining or going to the media but he backs up it with his on-court ability and hardwork. I’ve yet to see anything but complaining and inconsistency from Deron, give me Rondo any day of the week.

  • http://Slamonline.com nbk

Where you hear that Maniac? I love that move.

  • Yesse

I would rather get Deron than Dwight if LA can keep Bynum.

  • DerekG

Maniac has the trade there! The difference between Kobe and D12 is that D12 wants out regardless of who they bring! Kobe wants somebody other than a cone at pg and a lunatic at small forward! Certainly can’t blame him for that!
