Pau Gasol Not Sure of His Future With the Lakers

by Marcel Mutoni @marcel_mutoni

Prior to the NBA stepping in and killing the blockbuster three-team trade, Pau Gasol was on his way out of Los Angeles. Gasol, of course, is still in Laker purple and gold, but he has no idea how much longer that will be the case.

As trade rumors continue to swirl around the big fella, Pau Gasol admits to keeping track of the chatter, and has no real feel for his standing within the organization.

With the NBA’s March 15 trade deadline now less than a month away, Lakers forward Pau Gasol admits he’s not sure if his future lies in Los Angeles. “There’s talks and rumors every day. Today I was reading it was Minnesota is really interested in trying to put a good package together,” he said. “[Other teams are] calling, and it seems like things are just waiting for the right offer to come along, for [the Lakers] to pull the trigger.” [...] “It’s out of my hands. It is what it is. I’d like to be here,” he said. “I’d like to make this team better and get back to a championship level, but it’s not up to me.”

Asked when he thinks there will be a resolution to the trade rumors, Gasol said: “I’m not sure. I can’t tell. I wish I knew, so it would give me some peace, or more peace, but I don’t know.” [...] “Every day I tell myself, try to let it go. Don’t think about it. Have fun, be the player you are out there,” he said. “That’s all that you can do.”

As one of the likeliest pieces to be moved should the Lakers’ front-office pull the proverbial trigger, Pau Gasol is in an uneviably tough spot.

It’s a testament to his dedication and professionalism that Gasol has played as well as he has this season, given the constant trade rumors, to say nothing of the difficult adjustment to coach Mike Brown’s new system.

I see him in a timberwolves jersey next month

  • tomtom

Why do people talk about the Twolves deal? The wolves are not getting rid of Love or Rubio they are the only bright spots the team has had in literally 7 or 8 years. If Pau is aggressive, the team feeds the post and we land a good PG i believe LA will contend this year, no need for a blockbuster deal.

  • Mooney10

I’d never trade Pau if he was on my team, too much skill in so many areas, plus him and Bynum together is just tough…and I’m not a Laker fan, c’mon LA?

  • ab40

amare and melo for artest and gasol. wishfull thinking

  • tomtom

@ab40 wishful thinking for who? Sounds like a nightmare fore both parties :S

  • Startown

Rubio and gasol are great friends, not sure if that is the thinking on this?
Nice match, but giving up on Williams this early? Not sure

The lake Show is paying out dollars that should be producing a champion, instead they are paying slowed down over paid old guys…

If I were baby Buss I would NOT be a happy camper at the prospect of paying almost $100,000,000. for a team that could maybe even not make the playoff’s….This is WRONG, heck if I did that to my son (I call him my baby as well & he’s 40) he would not be happy with me..Heck it’ like papa Buss left baby like Bush left Obama with the economy.

The Lakers should trade everyone over 25 & or making over say $2,000,000 for draft picks in the upcoming draft & start from the beginning. My guess is Kobe would also want to be traded so he could get another ring or two & that would get us at least another three draft picks….

Lets go YOUNG, FAST & end up with a Thunder type team only better…. By the way, Pau to the Timberwolves for Williams & draft picks & ????makes a lot of sense to me….

  • tomtom

lmao @marty name me one young, fast, run and gun team that has won a championship in the past 15 years? Now name me some with dominant post players and vets. I think it may be 15-0. Defence and post play wins titles and if you don’t believe me they ask Steve Nash who let probably the best run and gun squad since the 80′s into the spurs every year.

  • tomtom

BTW trading everyone above the age of 25 leaves us with 5 players Josh Mcroberts, Darius Morris, Ebanks, goudy and Bynum. So the core would be Bynum right? Who is neither Small or Fast per your requirements for success.

The Lakers became an elite team when Pau arrived. They will cease being an elite team when Pau leaves unless he’s traded for a genuine grade A superstar like Howard. Pau’s stats are good, but even so he does so much that doesn’t reflect in the box score. Ultimately he’s a great scorer, a great passer at his position, a good rebounder and a good defender. He also plays well with Kobe, and he’s only, I believe, 30. Just last year people were anointing him as the best big in the league. Why consider trading him unless you get a truly knockout package in return?

  • http://www.borntocompete.com Money$hot

If I was Pau I would be unsure as well. L.A. only has a couple of people for trade bait. They dont want to trade Bynum (well maybe for Howard), and Kobe is not going no where. So, Pau see ya later.

  • tomtom

i agree with dagger!! Pau just needs to keep that killer instinct and he will have people back on his bandwagon by the end of the year..

  • north

I think the deal would have to be made for a PG… and no it’s obviously not going to be Rubio. Luke Ridnour would make Kobe smile. There are a lot of other teams with PG’s who are on the table though.
Gasol and Bynum don’t seem to mix well. Bynum plays better when Troy Murphy is on the floor. I’m pretty sure that’s why they think it’s better to go Bynum and get pieces while they can.

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

Do people actually think the Wolves can land Pau Gasol by giving up Michael Beasley and Derrick Williams?

  • Mike From Spain

So what sort of three side trade could bring Pau to the Wolves, and one or more PGs to the Lakers? I cannot think of a direct trade to the Wolves and no other teams expressed interest.

  • ClydeSays

Not sure that trading Gasol helps the Lakers. They won’t get equal value in a trade. If it’s just a trade to clear up cap room, sure. As far as getting a PG, Kobe hasn’t played with a traditional playmaker in the backcourt & Brown never had one in Cle. Do either of them know what to do with a passing guard who handles the ball 90% of the time?

  • http://www.reverbnation.com/tray24 T-Ray

Gotta agree with tomtoms earlier comment post play and veterans usually get it done. The game get’s much slower but this being a lockout season I could see a young run and gun team taking it this year.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

His future with the Lakers is to be traded. That is the one thing he can be sure of.

  • http://Slamonline.com Caboose

    Three team trade:
Ridnour, Barea, and World Peace to Orlando
Jameer, Williams, Beasley, and Wolves 2014 1st Rounder to LA
Gasol, Jason Richardson, and Steve Blake to Minnesota

  • Brion

If we get a team back in Seattle we’ll take him! Sh*t were excited at the possibility of paying to go see Cousins. (sorry Sac)

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

Caboose, I’m pretty certain the Lakers want a starting 4. I don’t think Derrick Williams would be that guy. I don’t see the Lakers hampering Kobe’s last “elite” years to help develop Williams and/or Beasley.

  • bull22

in spain the spainards use an expression “A TODO GAS”. so pau you were a huge part in kobe collecting two more rings.. so hit the metal to the petal out of la with no regrets and hasta la vista baby!

  • http://www.nba.com Red

Well last I checked Love declined the extension, maybe wolves feel he’ll leave so they’ll trade him.

  • http://Slamonline.com Caboose

True nbk, just depends how much (or little they value Gasol) and how desperate they are for a PG.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

    lol that’s valid.

  • http://youtu.be/0noHr-csjCA BreLon

Pau has an awful face, though. I wouldn’t want to look at it every day so that is going to kill a lot of trades (and probably explains why he’s in such a bad mood all the time)

The beauty of this one is i dont care. Phuk the lakers and Loby Tyrant !

  • RunNGun

A front court rotation of Gasol, Pek, and Love… hmm, Wolves fans must be sitting at the edge of their seats salivating.

  • tomtom

@red love signed his extension. He just has a weird opt out clause.

  • illogicaljedi

its funny how Laker fans mourned Odoms departure even after he wanted to be traded and love Bynum even if he is playing sub par to our expectations and injury prone yet want to trade gasol and get on him even if he made the lakers instant contenders the moment he got here kept playing despite being involved in trade/trade rumors and is rarely hurt and consistantly playing at a high level. i hate fLaker fans who are quick to get on gasol despite all he has done for the franchise…im sure at this point of the season they are all lob city fans by now anyway… and can we get rid of luke walton or at least have some kind of trade rumor.

  • http://alternet.org DarthStern

Hey numbnuts: Kobe cannot be traded, he has a no trade clause. And theres no way Lakers are taking draft pics from Minny because they arent very valuable already, let alone if they give them a good player.

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

I love Gasol and don’t want to see him go unless it’s an obvious upgrade coming back. I think a small trade for a decent PG should still be priority numero uno.

  • http://www.reverbnation.com/tray24 T-Ray

Pau, vente a los Phoenix Suns.

  • http://www.nba.com Red

Oh my bad I didn’t know. Well I assume it’ll be a 3 team trade or it’ll be Williams & Barea/Ridnour and maybe even Johnson. In my opinion at least.

@AQWORD……….You Read The article,Read the comments then left a comment

    You do care

  • -MAS-

Would you be interesed in coming to Newark for a couple of months. Deron Williams and K. Hump for Pau Gasol and Steve Blake. Sounds good enough! Right?

  • http://Slamonline.com Caboose

^That would create the worst team in the history of the league.
Farmar, MarShon, Stevenson, Pau, and Shelden with Blake, Morrow, and Petro off the bench.

  • http://nbasobrietystrike.blogspot.com/ CoolWhip

so we credit a guy when he plays well amidst trade rumours, but trash him when he plays poorly?
C’mon, we can’t commend a player for doing what they’re supposed to do.

  • http://idunkonthem.blogspot.com albie1kenobi

i wonder how Coach Popp feels about this…

  • http://www.kb24.com The Seed

Trade Gasol for Deron Williams if Howard continue, to play around.

  • http://slamonline.com 1982

Trade Kobe for Deron and Kris.

  • asylum77

trading Pau somehow to the Wolves for Love and Bynum for Howard would set the Lakers up for anothr 10 years if the y could get it done. Throw Metta World’s contract in there and see what they can get. Just saying, know it will never happen but hey?

  • http://www.twitter.com/gerardhimself Gerard Himself

asylum, I have no idea why you posted what you just posted. Same goes for 1982. Anyways, The Lakers shouldn’t trade Pau Gasol. Still a very good player, and one of the best passing big men in the game right now. I understand the Lakers need to do something, and don’t have a whole lot to offer to other teams, but trading Gasol will hurt them.

  • xx_JOMOMMA_xx

i love how everyone blames gasol… how did kobe get street cred from colorado? he never had it before … he still doesnt… no gasol no titles.. no shaq no titles.. heck no fisher no titles lol..

  • Ill Smith

3 Team trade with LAkers, Minny & Clips
Lakers get: Williams, Pekovic, Mo Williams, Minnys ’14 pick
    Minny gets: Gasol & Barnes
Clippers get: Beasley & Lakers 2nd rounder

Lakers tote a Bynum/Pek/Williams/Kobe/Mo lineup (with Williams groomed into LA’s next superstar & did we forget how nice Mo looked last time he played with a superstar & Mike Brown?)
Sota’s Gasol/Love/Rubio nucleus will make white ppl across the nation rejoice
Clips get that bench scoring they were looking for with JR & they don’t seem to have a problem taking in knuckleheads
    Everybody wins….rite?

  • http://www.twitter.com/gerardhimself Gerard Himself

is this the espn trade checker right now? Come on man

  • Dungeon Family

Before Kobe what did Shaq Have? NO RINGS got dominated by Rockets in the finals

Before Kobe what Did Pau Have? Not One Playoff win in Memphis

so sit yo lame ass down somewhere

  • Devonte

In March P.Gasol should be traded to C`s. The Lakers should make a 3 team trade with Boston & Detroit. Lakers get Wilcox,Prince,Villanueva, & 1st round pick. Detroit get Johnson,Goudelock,Walton, & Barnes. Lakers can sign R.Wallace for 1 year a back PF/C who can shoot from outside. Lakers should trade Blake,Ebanks, & McRoberts for R.Sessions & Eyenga.
