Report: Chris Paul Recruiting JR Smith to the Clippers

It’s no secret that the Los Angeles Clippers are one of the teams aggressively pursuing JR Smith’s services – Smith is expected to leave China this week – and according to an ESPN report, point guard Chris Paul is leading the charge: “The Clippers were interested in Smith even before the season-ending injury to Chauncey Billups last week, believing they could use more offensive firepower off the bench. That was going to be a harder sell to Smith, who is looking for a larger role. Now, they can offer Smith the opportunity to start. Like Billups did with recently-signed Kenyon Martin, point guard Chris Paul has taken a lead role in recruiting Smith, according to the source. The two are close from their two seasons as teammates with the Hornets. Also like Billups and Martin, who are both represented by agent Andy Miller, Paul and Smith both are represented by agent Leon Rose. That would seem like an advantage, except for the fact that Rose also represents New York Knicks forward Carmelo Anthony, who said this week he’d be happy to have his former Nuggets teammate join him in New York. ‘Yeah, I think so, he’s one of those type of players,’ Anthony told a small group of reporters after the Knicks’ win over the Nets last weekend. ‘If it happens, it happens and I’ll be happy.’ The Knicks are the presumed favorite to land Smith because they can offer him both a large role on the team, and their pro-rated $2.5 million mini mid-level exception. Exceptions are only pro-rated after Feb. 10, so Smith wouldn’t be losing much. Most of the other teams reportedly interested in him, like the Lakers or Clippers, can only offer him a veteran minimum contract, which would be pro-rated from the beginning of the season.”

    they love collecting former nuggets.

  • tiquan

With this addition, the clippers would be the highest flying team in NBA history

  • startown

When the best player on the team recruits a new player to your team, the rest of the TEAM feels slighted. Why is he not happy with what they have, they look pretty darn good to me!

  • http://www.alllooksame.com Tarzan Cooper

He would be a great addition. Paul, mowill, caron, blake, and maybe earl? Crazy scoring. Paul would love to direct that team

  • Wasabi

Rest of the team slighted? I’d think the only player to feel slighted would be Randy Fore and, as a Clippers fan, I can live with that.

  • quest

knicks will prolly get him since they can give him the most money im sure hes going to wanna make back some of the money he lost by not being in the nba this year because im sure he didnt make nearlyu the money he should have made this year

  • fruizm

the Clippers are gonna be SHOWTIME!

  • http://redoftoothandclaw.ca/ niQ

An oppurtunity to start would be quite the offer. Yea, I think he’ll end up with the Clippers.

  • startown

Randy Foye is a pretty good player, his numbers have been solid, Smith won’t help your team that much

why is it that commissioner does not want one team to have an advantage, but Chris Paul wants J.R. Smith to make his team stronger? what will he do.

  • http://www.nba.com Red

Interesting, they’re on paper, able to go all the way.

  • jr smith

my favorite part about this is how you lot didn’t give credit to the website you stole this from

  • quest

numbers have been solid but you can tell hes gonna screw them in the playoffs if they dont get a starter at the 2

JR Smith will only improve the Clippers. You can’t shoot a team out of a game if you don’t have the ball. You all really naive enough to think JR Smith would even have the opportunity to shoot them out of a game? (hint: Chris Paul decides who gets the ball)

  • ChipS

He won’t help your team that much? At 6’6 220, Clips need all the size it can get in the backcourt. Score, penetrate, get out on the wing on the break. Another high flyer, and good pick and roll player with decent handles. All he needs is discipline and on a team with veterans like Chauncey,KMart,CP3, and Reggie Evans, all former teammates of his, they will keep him in check.

  • T-Money

i’m not worried about the offense. the clips are already not very good defensively and you add JR to the mix?

  • http://facebook.com/tronjohnson Chief

Bring him to NY, where Lin is the director now and with all those weapons he can direct pretty well.

  • AD

You know how mad Kobe would be if Jr goes to The clippers…. I would be heated lol.. But jr would only make the team better.. Cp3 has the ball most of the time and is only goin to make his life easier….. If this does happen and Randy foye gets mad, well than its his own fault

  • shuref00t

And just when I thought the Clippers couldn’t be anymore entertaining to watch.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

good point T-Money. I hadn’t though about that aspect of all of this.

  • james

I would love to see J.R. go to the clippers. I don’t think that he would have a bigger role with the knicks than what he would have with the clippers. However I would also like to see him go to the heat

  • Ldub

Playing with one of the L’s best PGs as well as one of the Ls best PFs and your old teammates from Denver is a great reason to come to LA. I think CP3, Billups and Butler will kinda put Smith in check (as far as hot doggin’ is concerned). Dude can score. Streaky or not, he can score. I wonder if Stern would veto this signing! LOL

  • Isaac

signing JR Smith would allow the Clippers to move Foye’s expiring contract for a wing defender.

  • ChipS

Man, the league is gonna get entertaining when K-Mart and JR(whatever team he chooses) get into full swing.

  • vctmac

JR Smith shud choose between Lakers and CLippers loll. and i hate the lakers; but if he wants his career to go any further its with these 2 teams or even chicago. NYK wnt work out, he already p layed with melo and nene, tyson chandler and amare not gna make tht big of a difference. tyson is not an offensive threat. but if he wnats fame, its NYK. next thing u want is a thug stacking blood symbols after he knocks dwn 3′s. type of player NYK is gna love and need. prob one of the only ones who has abit of “street” in his game.
hope he goes with d rose bcause its already a defensive system. they need an offensive player, rip hamilton is good midrange and defender to move without the rock, but u need jr who can throw it down on defenders and rise up whenever he wants to knock em down. unlimited range call him long distance sniper.

  • k9

Stop with the stern vetoing signings and trades jokes you idiots. He can only do that with the hornets because they are owned by the NBA. I hope you imbeciles know that.

  • Ldub

k9…is stern your pops or what? Im pretty damn sure everyone who makes mention of stern exercising his authority when it comes to “NBA OWNED TEAMS” are all aware of the ins and outs, as its been mentioned numerous times. And I dont see why you would get so flustered, offended, annoyed and/or defensive anyways. Unless Stern is somehow related to you, and “vetoed”(oh theres that word again) you out of the will from “lil pricks r’ us”!!! Change your rag!

  • http://stapledesign.com Spaceship Jay

It’ll be good for the Clips. Chris won’t stand for senseless shots being hoisted up. I don’t even think he’ll get the ball to shot unless its an assist from CP/Chauncey/Mo.

  • swiftyk

JR to the Clips would get me to finally accept them as a contender. i’m not buying them as having a real shot at the title right now.

  • http://www.kb24.com The Seed

J.R. Smith should go to the Bulls, Pacers or Magic.

  • http://www.nba.com Alf

Earl Smith III would be a welcome addition to my fantasy basketball team.

  • Justin G.

Ldub, it’s probably because the “jokes” are getting old more than anything
