Pau Gasol Sees ‘a Certain Level of Selfishness’ in Lakers’ Play


In addition to the relentless trade rumors, Pau Gasol is also unhappy with the Los Angeles Lakers’ play lately (which has resulted in two horrific losses to Detroit and Washington.) From NBA Maniacs (via BDL): “Kobe Bryant missed more shots in Washington’s comeback win (22) than Gasol and Andrew Bynum combined to take (they finished 12 of 19). And that Bryant missed 9 of 10 attempts in the fourth quarter in a fruitless attempt to fire his Lakers back into the game from the perimeter. Either way, the back-to-back Laker losses to Detroit and Washington leave the championship hopefuls in a bad way, and Gasol (again, through this Internet translator) can’t be happy. Here’s the quote: ‘(There is) lack of concentration, overconfidence and a certain level of selfishness, in general. I’m not a person or a selfish player, but we have to move the ball more, and we have to look further the team game, because we have enough talent to use different players,’ said an upset Gasol to the Catalan public radio.”

    @heals and @albe didnt kobe say at some point he would like for Pau to stay? Could be wrong, but I’m pretty sure he said that at some point when addressing the Lakers and their attempts to trade Pau

    @KHOLIDAY and tomtom: i read the full quote, but that one sentence was the distilled essence of how he feels about Pau. if he REALLY has his back, he would have said that, instead of saying the trade rumor is affecting Pau’s play on the court and thus affecting the team. he wouldn’t have say the same thing if it was Fisher (if he has any trade value at all).

    Mos def KH, but it came off a little hallow (to me) given what he said just before it. We all know they have 2 assets, and the GM doesn’t wanna move Drew unless it for DH12 or something stealthy we don’t know. So if something needs to get done that only leaves one option (I don’t agree), Pau. Let’s also remember this was right after an ugly loss to a team he has alotta enmity for (right? wasn’t this after the Phx loss?), so I’d be a hypocrite not to cut him some slack there…

    @tomtom…You say Pau’s forgotten what it’s like to carry a team but the point is Kobe doesn’t have to carry this team. He has two pretty reliable bigs he can go to when his shot isn’t falling. The greats get it done in other ways. They get to the foul line. They set up their teammates, they rebound. I remember Jordan going 3-18 against the Knicks in the ’93 playoffs game 3, but he finished with 21 points and a triple double. It was a blowout. You don’t always have to lead your team in scoring if it’s really about getting wins

    @justinG: so a team doesn’t need a leader? If guys get out of hand who do you think is the voice on that team?? Remember Bynum is still only 24 with about 3 full seasons under his belt in reality. My point, and i say it all the time, is that Pau has an easy ride, he can play badly and go under the radar and have everyone blame Kobe or even Bynum, but if he plays well he gets told he is the best PF in the world. He gets superstar money and superstar treatment, but a lot less pressure than most (less the trade talks) and he doesn’t bring it every night, unlike that selfish guy he is talking about

    Albie..matter of opinion i suppose, what about last night, does this sound like he has Pau’s back enough?? “I adore Pau,” Bryant said. “So it’s tough to see him go through this (stuff). … I wish I could do something. It’s tough.”.

    Kobe Bryant is gun slinging at an all-time high this year and he’s firing blanks. He’s got to be top 5 worst team mates of all time. He’s selfish beyond belief and he knows the Lakers don’t have enough to win it all so he is racking stats against his ‘legacy’ right now. His arrogance and selfishness are disgusting. Real talk.

    He’s just figuring this out now? Even when Jax was on the bench, Kobe would just go nuts sometimes. Now with Mike Brown & a fading chance to contend? Forget it. He’s just going to do what he feels like doing…

    Anynody who thinks if Bynum and Gasol get the ball more down low, will help this team win a title or compete are clueless. Go watch all of the Laker games, not just the TV games, they get pushed off the block, don’t establish good post positions, overcrowd the lanes and don’t play with a chip on their shoulder. Kobe is doing whatever he thinks can help them win. THATS CALL EFFORT. Pau or Bynum need to need to be traded for something. BOOK IT
