Stan Van Gundy: Orlando Magic Don’t Want to Be Great

After the Orlando Magic dropped a game to the awful Charlotte Bobcats last night, you just knew that a Stan Van Gundy rant was on its way. And the Magic head coach did not disappoint. Reports the AP: “Orlando Magic coach Stan Van Gundy seems to be growing tired of his team’s dispassionate attitude. Van Gundy took a few shots at his players’ lackluster approach following a 100-84 loss Tuesday night to the Charlotte Bobcats, the worst team in the NBA. ‘Our guys are satisfied that we came in with the third-best record in the East and the fifth-best record in the league,’ Van Gundy said. ‘They’re satisfied with that. I don’t think there’s any push to be better or any push to be great. If there is, it doesn’t show up in games.’ Added Van Gundy: ‘This is who are. Whether we change that or not, I don’t know.’”

Part of that could be on the coach but it’s also partly because he doesn’t have any players on that team with that, for lack of a better term, killer mentality. I know that word gets used a little too much around here but it’s the best I could come up with at 6:35am and 14 hours of work. Anyway, it’s a damn shame that players can’t seem to find it in them to want to take it to the next level. Talking about wanting to be great and doing the things necessary to BE great are two completely different things.

“I need to show them some of my old adult movies and show them even a guy who looks like me can achieve greatness!” Van Gundy added later.

Honestly, Dwight’s effort last night did NOT help. I think Orlando knows they’re losing Dwight right now; if they can get a good package, they’ll be a more cohesive team. Ryan, Jameer, and JJ tried all they could last night. It’s Jason Richardson, Hedo, and Dwight to an extent who have cost the Magic a lot of games. And y’all know I love Dwight, but his effort has been lacking, despite what the numbers say. I can’t wait to see him ball on another team and I can’t wait to see a hard-working Magic.

Whats with Orlando and people saying stuff to the press? The Orlando press is just great or there is a case of verbal diarrhea in Mickey-mouse land.

Thinks like this tend to happen when your best player and leader is an overgrown child. Yes, you can be a complete child and still be a good player (see: Andrew Bynum or Michael Beasley)
