Dirk Nowitzki Wants Deron Williams to ‘Run the Show’ in Dallas

by Marcel Mutoni @marcel_mutoni

Despite their reportedly slim chances to ink Deron Williams, it’s no secret that the Dallas Mavericks desperately want to land the superstar free agent point guard.

Dirk Nowitzki continues to lead the charge on the recruitment front this offseason. The Dallas Mavericks’ forward tells KTCK-AM (via the Dallas Morning News) that DWill would be a perfect fit in Texas:

On NBA free agency: “I’m anxious. We’d love to get D-Will (Deron Williams) in here. That’s no secret. If you look at the league now, if you look at those top teams, they all have two or three playmakers you can hand the ball to and they do their thing. We just need to get better. I think we have some question marks going into the summer. We signed Rick (Carlisle) for four years so we got that out of the way. Now, it’s time to get some players in here and get better. I always said we’re not happy losing in the first round. We feel like we need to compete every year at the highest. We’ll see what happens.”

On if he knows Deron Williams: “I know him. I obviously competed with him in the All-Star game. That’s really the only time you get to spend a little time off the court with somebody. When he played in Utah, he was in the West so we were in same locker room a little bit. He’s a good dude. He’s a competitor. He’s one of the one of the best point guards in this league. He’s athletic. He can shoot. He can get to the basket. He can pass. He’s a great all-around weapon. We’d love to have him run the show here. We’ll see what he decides. I hope we have a good shot. He’s from here. His mom lives here. He likes it here. He loves golf, and we have great golf courses. We have a great organization, great fans, and a great owner that makes stuff happen all the time. I really think we have as good a shot as Brooklyn has.”

Meanwhile, on Twitter, Delonte West enthusiastically put the call out for Deron Williams to take less money and join the Mavericks, this despite Delonte’s own uncertain future in Dallas.

Dirk is basically the only star player that can beg publicly for another star player to join him and not get criticized for it.

I don’t see a problem with him asking for help. The last two all-stars Dirk has had along side him were an aging Jason Kidd and Josh Howard. Whether they land D-Will, who knows, but Dirk deserves some young talent around him for once.

  • kobe

If lebron said this back in his cleveland days he would have been roasted!! I think kobe is allowed to beg as well. He basically said get me help or I am leaving, back before they got gasol. haha

AS A NET fan i want to see dwill in BK. But if he goes to dallas, most nets fans should understand. Plus he will get to show why i call him the best pg in the NBA.

  • Ldub

cosign JT…I was just thinking the same thing. Perhaps because Williams is a free agent and they wouldnt need to trade for him is the difference? Either way…anyone else would have been criticized for trying to bring in more talent.

  • tpathi1

if the nets can offer him 27 million morethan any other team and an extra year..then the implication shouldnt be that he is leaving 27 million on the table more like 10-15 million i would think

In layman’s terms would you rather make $100k working for a company that isn’t fun, isn’t going anywhere, and it’ll be a grind everyday or would you rather make $85k working for a really cool company with good co-workers? A company that’ll take you places.
I know i’d be going to Dallas

Come to Dallas & il suk Ur d!(k Derone. Diggles.

  • Ash

How could you say no to that? Good pitch Dirk

  • Ldub

Wixxurs….you do realize that in a few years…he will be in the same position he is in now right (if he goes to dallas). Should he stay in Brooklyn…not only will he be making more money, his endorsement deals will increase…they would have a new arena…and players like DH have already stated they would want to come and play there. Its going to take time to get the franchise going and growing. But I dont anticipate more than 2-3 years. Wade did it in 3 years. MJ didnt win when he first came in. It all takes time. I just dont see Dallas being the best option. Money wise, team wise, playing wise, market wise etc. Brooklyn is better. Only reason Dal may appear better now is because of Dirk. But he is gone in what 3 years anyways?

Dwill,MarshonBrooks,WilsonChandler,KrisHump,Dwight. Is that good enough to beat miami @ldub?

  • http://bebe310.blogspot.com/ anonymous

@ald I dont think brooks and chandler won`t cut it as starters. brooks has too little experience to play the 2 for a contender and chandler isnt a good enough defensive 3 to even slow down lebron. gerald wallace or better yet trevor ariza who has ample experience with la and new orleans would be a great fit at the 3. ariza and g wallace are dig-in, gritty defensive players but ariza would be able to stretch the floor better with his 3-pt shot. the bench is just as important (even more so when competing against mia since they have very little depth). dal beat mia in 2011 because they had a complete team from the starters to the reserves. I would think that brooks will more than likely be traded along with lopez (and someone else) in the hypothetical dwight-bk-orl deal anyway.

  • ALD

@anonymous chandler is a good defender.. slowing down lebron is hard for anyone.. i can see brooks being traded but, saying brooks is too experience is kind of crazy. U gain experience playing with the starters . His decent season last year indicates that he would be better this year, being better than a lot of 2 guards on contenders.

Some of the commenters here are ridiculous lol, all i ever see is__ is the only person that can do ____ without being criticized. Or how come ____ can do ____ but when lebron or kobe does it, they’re crucified. The same thing was said earlier about nash” why does nash get a pass for not being able to take over a game while being the best player, but if that was lebron, ppl wud be killing him” there’s nothing wrong with what dirk is doing, its not like he has held his team hostage with threatning that he wud leave unless he got more help(even tho he decided way before that that he was leaving anyways) ala lebron, and its not like he publicly ranted at his team management, and demanded a trade, ala kobe. All he’s doing is recruiting a free agents, which is perfectly legal, and should be done. The mavs do need to improve, dirk is trying to make that happe.. so people need to chill. ___

    Dirk has nothing left.

  • http://www.triplejunearthed.com/dacre Dacre

aman… but Mark Cuban has a few Benjamin Frankins under the mattress thats what matters.

  • monster_nw8

D-Will is still the best pg in the league to me.

  • http://www.kb24.com The Seed

I told everyone this year that Dirk will go back to his Choking days and not do anything anymore in the NBA period. JJ Barea and Jason Terry with Tyson Chandler defense was the key to Mavericks Title win and Bron’s Finals Choke.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Redd

D-Will is going to the Nets. With that Cavs trade (which was insanely stupid) the Mavs show they’re rebuilding now.

  • monster_nw8

@The Seed Jason Terry doesnt play defense. lol

  • http://eurosport.com Bow down to the Chosen One King James

He certainly deserves some help,i mean,he is the 2nd finals mvp in history,to lead a team to a championship, without another all star on it. he deserves help

  • http://www.kb24.com The Seed

@monster can you read, Tyson Chandler defense, Jason Terry makes shots.
