Joe Johnson Says Nets are the Best NBA Team in New York

Shots fired! (Or something to that effect …) Joe Johnson wasted little time getting the New York rivalry between the Knicks and Nets jump started. During his introductory press conference today, Johnson proudly stated that the Nets are Gotham’s top squad, while GM Billy King said that Joe and Deron Williams now form the League’s top backcourt. (King, however, acknowledged that Brooklyn is still not a championship contender.) From ESPN: “Joe Johnson thinks the best NBA team in New York City is the one that just traded for him: The Brooklyn Nets. ‘The Nets. Definitely, the Nets,’ Johnson responded Friday at a news conference at Brooklyn Borough Hall, kicking off what should be a riveting ‘East River Rivalry’ between the Nets and the New York Knicks. ‘This is a great day because it’s a day when we put together the best backcourt in the NBA,’ general manager Billy King said, alluding to pairing Johnson (four years, $89 million) with Deron Williams, who signed a max contract worth $98 million over five years. So what about the Los Angeles Lakers dynamic duo of Kobe Bryant and Steve Nash? ‘They’re good. But I think ours is better,’ King replied. ‘If you asked (Lakers GM) Mitch (Kupchak), he’d probably say his is better. It’s like a North Carolina-Duke thing.’ Johnson and Williams headlined an impressive offseason haul by King, who, with what felt like a seemingly endless spending budget from Russian billionaire owner MIkhail Prokhorov, re-signed Brook Lopez (four years, $60 million) and Gerald Wallace (four years, $40 million), while also bringing in Bosnian stretch forward Mirza Teletovic (three years, $9 million) and rugged rebounder Reggie Evans (three years, $5 million). The Nets, who have gone 58-172 in the last three seasons and haven’t made the playoffs since 2006-07, now believe like they can compete with the upper echelon in the Eastern Conference. ‘It’s not just about winning a local championship or a regional championship,’ coach Avery Johnson said. ‘It’s really about winning an NBA championship, and that’s what our focus is on.’”

    And so it begins…

  • FnF

They don’t even have a full roster.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Slick Ric

This backcourt is sicker than a homo that drinks magic johnson juice

  • http://cnbc.com JTaylor21

They are not better than the Nash/Kobe backourt.

You lost me at “Joe Johnson said …”

  • ChipS

Guarantee Iman or JR respond on twitter before the day over with lol.

  • http://9gag.com/gag/4568611 Max

They kinda are if they get keep Hump.

  • Shifty

How Johnson……….pft. Will eat my words though if DWill can bump his stats up tho.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Slick Ric

Slam has to fix the comment section, that first comment wasn’t me.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Slick Ric

    Now I cant comment?

  • thenatural

i see this backcourt failing miserably – two guys that both have to have the ball in their hands to be effective. it’s like the nets’ version of a stephon marbury/steve francis backcourt

  • O

It’s probably a toss up at this point. No one knows how anyone is going to mesh together this year on either team. Knicks and Nets bother got a lot of new pieces that have the potential to be huge difference makers for their team. I will say that Brooklyn is looking A LOT younger on paper. That’s for sure.

  • http://www.slamonline.com spit hot fiyah

again…what is supposed to say. the knicks r better than us? this does call for a new nets cover though, champs by 201…..

  • LA Huey

FnF, true. And JJ aint lyin either.

  • phil da windmill

joe its simply not in your streaky dna to talk this way you ain’t no killer joe you still a lame a trade dont fix lame it come from inside and time after time you prove you dont got it my hawks will destroy you and your nets just wait till you come back to the highlight factory that weak iso ain’t gonna cut it either.

  • Donte

You better say you’re better than them… Just gave up the while team to get you. Nj is better tho. Ny has yet to find out that coach sucks… the players tell him what to do.(woodson)

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

they probably are better than the Knicks. They’re talent mix makes way more sense then the Knicks does. And Deron Williams will absolutely destroy Jeremy Lin now that the teams are even. Don’t bring up what happened last season, because that sh*t was an aberration.

  • Brahsef

People sleepin on Iso Joe. With a real pg he’s bout to have a monster season. Not max contract worthy, but I feel he might put down 25ppg

  • http://www.slamonline.com 19821982

@nbk Deron already kind of did “destroy” Lin – head to head at least. That game where Lin put up his numbers, Deron had a good game himself, they just didn’t win. Then next time they played Deron nonchalantly put up Lin’s career high and sat half of the 4th because they were up so much.

You really feel that way Taylor? Seems like you would be so down on their defense you wouldn’t like LA’s back court. I think KB and Nash represent the best back court offensively by a land slide. Overall I think they are the best back court, but D-Will and JJ is definitely going to make a run at claiming that title.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

oh yeah, my bad 1982×2 i forgot about game 2.

  • http://www.soundcloud.com/tray-5 T-Ray

Move LeBron to the PG and it’s no debate who has the best backcourt.

  • CDaTyrant

    Knicks get NO respect.

  • alphabeta

Best team in new york? Your team doesn’t exist yet until the Barclays is finished.

  • Clydesays

Williams/Johnson/Lopez are a nice trio, but let’s see them grab a playoff spot…

  • http://www.slamonline.com 19821982

Teams with Max Contracts that can’t make it out of the first round deserve no respect – that’s not even trash talking, it’s that way for any sport. If the Heat lost in the first round they’d get quadruple your lack of respect.

  • ChipS

Only advantage the Nets have is at the PG spot on paper, and before somebody say SG, I think it’s even at that spot. Both teams need to show that they can click together with the new pieces first. I’ll wait before I give the Nets the advantage.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

saying Joe Johnson is equal to Iman Shumpert is the same as saying Carmelo Anthony is equal to Gerald Wallace.

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

    True T-Ray.

  • ChipS

I’m not looking at it as just Johnson vs. Shumpert. I didn’t compare just those two players. Since you wanna put it that way, A healthy Shumpert’s defense can rival JJ’s offense, that’s the way I see it. JR Smith and Marshon Brooks, no advantage between those two except for JR’s athleticism. That’s why I said even. And Joe Johnson’s getting up in age(not really old just 31) and is not as explosive as he was capable of being a couple of years ago. That’s why I called it even.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

the problem is, Joe Johnson is still a top 5 SG. And for as good as his offense is, his defense is just as good. Shumpert……not even relatively a productive offensive player. 9PPG on 40% shooting, and 30% from 3 is, well, terrible for a shooting guard. if JR Smith and MaRshon Brooks are even then there is a clear advantage at the 2 for Brooklyn. A Clear Advantage. Plus Shumpert is 6’5″ 210LBs….Joe Johnson is 6’8″ 230LBs. He doesn’t need to be explosive.

  • ChipS

Dude, I could careless about size advantage. Ask Tony allen, who is 6’4 212 if he can guard 6’8 240 Joe Johnson. Not saying Shump and T.A. are in the same ballpark but both defensive studs. I just don’t see a advantage, unless they play right now, at this very minute. Even then I would still take my chances with Kidd and JR vs JJ and Brooks. Even at 39 or 40 Kidd can still defend.

  • jinolin

BK no answer for Melo, NYK no answer for DWill… I think its a wash.

  • http://Slamonline.com nbk

Johnson a one of the better SG’s in the league on the block. With & Lopez on the floor, Johnson would be able to exploit his size advantage.

  • http://www.newyorkshockexchange.com Shock Exchange

Can someone tell the Shock Exchange in which year did Joe Johnson actually “earn” his contract in the league? To describe his shot selection as “childlike” would be too kind. Lastly, if he was “all that” why would ATL be so eager to get rid of him?

  • http://www.rich-imaging.com Dutch Rich

Still have to sign Hump. He’s the Motor to this thing.
Billy King made another great move signing Stackhouse. I assume his role will be to mentor our top young gun Marshon Brooks who absolutely did damage today at the Summer League. Went for 34.

  • http://Slamonline.com nbk

He never earned this “max” contract. He got paid his money because his deal expired in a very opportunistic off-season and his teams only chance of retaining him.
    .
And you keep going on about his shot selection, why don’t you go look up the las time he wasn’t a teams primary player and then holler.

  • http://www.newyorkshockexchange.com Shock Exchange

So if you are your team’s primary option then by definition, your shot selection is excellent. I am learning a lot from this site. But you’re still not on the list.

  • http://Roosterteeth.com Caboose

I swear summer just brings in the idiots.

  • http://Slamonline.com nbk

    Damn you’re shockingly stupid

  • http://slamonline.com JER

nbk u love JJ don’t you

  • http://slamonline.com Chinese Oppenheimer

    Rereme rinn will destroy williams

  • http://bebe310.blogspot.com/ anonymous

@dutch I`m going to go out on a limb and assume that your comment was of a sarcastic nature because signing stackhouse will have a negative effect if he plays and no effect at all if he doesnt. stop with all the mentoring bulls*#t. jerry can`t play and bk has aggressively been trying to ship marshon to another team all summer anyway. they signed stackhouse as a PLAYER not as a MENTOR. note: humphries is almost as good as gone since he wants at least a 3-year contract (looking for a 4-year contract) and a consistent double-double man is apparently not worth that to billy king.

  • http://slamonline.com Datkid

the funniest part of this, is that they actually are far better than the knicks. like superior in at least 2 or 3 different ways lmao
