Michael Jordan Thinks Kidd-Gilchrist Is a ‘Scottie Pippen-Like’ Player

Michael Kidd-Gilchrist had a strong Summer League debut, posting 18 points, 8 rebounds, 5 assists and 4 steals in a victory over the Sacramento Kings. And to Bobcats owner Michael Jordan, Gilchrist’s ability to fill the box score is reminiscent of his former parter-in-crime, Scottie Pippen. The Charlotte Observer has the details: “When Charlotte Bobcats owner Michael Jordan looks at first-round draft pick Michael Kidd-Gilchrist, he is reminded of Scottie Pippen, Jordan’s NBA championship-winning teammate on the Chicago Bulls. Jordan isn’t suggesting Kidd-Gilchrist is another Pippen, but he likes what he’s seen from the one-year star on Kentucky’s national championship team. Jordan dismissed questions about Kidd-Gilchrist’s ability to be a consistent perimeter scorer and endorsed both draft choices. ‘I think (Kidd-Gilchrist is) going to be fine,’ Jordan said, speaking before the Hooptee Celebrity Golf Classic at the Golf Club at Ballantyne Thursday. ‘I think the kid has the potential to be, as I call him, a connector. He can connect a lot of dots, a Scottie Pippen-like player. Everybody’s complaining about his shooting. He never illustrated to me that he’s afraid to shoot the basketball. He can still shoot the ball. He believes he can make shots. I think the kid is going to be OK.’

And he probably thought Kwame was a Shaq like player..

Scottie pippen almost gets more erroneous comparison than MJ. Not saying this is one of them because I didn’t paid attention to college basketball last season but with guys like batum etc…are ridiculous.

    I guess we’ll see then… bc I see trevor ariza-like,,, TRASH

I gotta side with MJ a little. In his collegiate career and his first NBA summer league game I saw flashes.

and we all know how well mike can judge talent.

  • bike

He has the skill set of a player that could make first team All-Defense. Offense? maybe. Have to wait and see.

Look at the stat line 18 points, 8 rebounds, 5 assists and 4 steals those are Pippen type numbers & it took Pip a min before he was putting up lines like that. I don’t think he’s saying Kidd is gonna be as good, but that he has a similar skill set.

This is about 4 days old Slam..come on guys!

If MKG can average numbers even remotely near his first Summer League game, then colour me impressed.

  • bdogg

first draft choice mj has made that will be a slam dunk! no pun intended..he hit the nail on the head with this one! MKG sans AD will be a starter for a long time..all star? time will tell but he has the potential to say the least..can not say that about his past picks including kemba and i like kemba!

  • MirChilly

Def agree with Slick Ric… outside of Jordan, No player has more comparisons. Too be honest, pippen has the worst. By far!!! Corey Brewer, Trevor Ariza, Nic Batum and so on. Atleast the players who got Jordan comparisons was at some point all stars… But MKG will be good. Too competitive not to be. That is the defining factor between sooo many players, the will to compete. MKG has that

  • timbo slice

high praise for the kid, hope he lives up to it, hes got a hell of a motor

  • T-Money

i don’t see scottie point forward skills in mkg at all. to me, he’s more like a gerald wallace.

  • HAMMER

Almost any player who is long, lanky and athletic will get the Pip comparison. The closest was Grant Hill.

i’m with T-Money. I don’t see MKG as a Point Forward as much as just SF/SG who can’t shoot. Gerald Wallace is a good comparison. Not really many guys like him all-time. Best Case Scenario he develops offensive skills that resemble Pippen, but I don’t really see it as very likely. More like he’s a SF version of Dennis Rodman at his best.

From what I’ve seen so far (limited at best), MKG has the abilities to be significantly better than GWall.

Question I have for Jordan is why bring in Ramon Sessions with Kemba Walker on the roster? It’s time to let Kemba start for that team. Also, if MKG is Pippen, who is going to be the MJ for that team? Gerald Henderson?

  • http://cnbc.com JTaylor21

Kemba started all last season and wasn’t as good as everyone expected (the guy shot 36% from the field).

  • http://Roosterteeth.com Caboose

MKG actually has pretty good court vision. He’s not the Hedo Turkoglu point forward, but he can create offense SIGNIFICANTLY better than Gerald Wallace. He’s closer to Andre Iguodala, in my mind.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

Iguodala sounds like a good comparison. didn’t even think of him. i just don’t know how well MKG handles the ball.

  • http://Roosterteeth.com Caboose

Very well. Not exceptional with both hands yet, but he sees the court. Think rookie Tyreke Evans in terms of ball-handling. If he gets minutes right away (as he should), I see him putting up 15-7-5 averages.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

Naw, i get what your saying, but Tyreke Evans is not the right guy. Tyreke got handles on handles on handles. He just can’t go left once he makes his move.

    Mike’s a gambler. What can I say?

  • http://Juanm.garcia@comcast.net NYPlaya

    Mike’s a gambler. What can I say?

  • http://Roosterteeth.com Caboose

Yeah, that’s kind of what MKG looked like in college. He’s…clever..with the ball without being a great ball handler. If that makes sense. Maybe not at Tyreke’s level, but I know you get the comparison.

  • http://Slamonline.com nbk

    Yeah I do, no doubt

  • http://whut Ugh

Pip had no jumper when he came in to the league either.

  • cbb_fanatic

He’s definitely a Pippen. He’s a scoring threat, but he’s so unselfish that he looks for easy shots for his team mates. Versatile and competitive. He’s definitely changing the “loser” culture of the Bobcats. Kemba Walker is coming in and playing like his old championship self again mostly because MKG brought that energy. And the fact that MKG is coming in with Jeff Taylor, a scoring threat who is just as competitive, will make the Bobcats and interesting team to watch.

  • ReHeat

MKG is Big daddy Kane rollin with Biz Markie Byombo. BDK and Biz back again, dope.

  • Asadsaleh3

@JTaylor DJ Augustin started more games than Kemba did last season.
