Charles Oakley on Dwight Howard: ‘He Just Kept Crying and Got His Way’

Charles Oakley knows a thing or two about NBA big men, if only because he was one himself for 19 seasons. And this won’t come as much of a shock, but Oak—who’s generally known for his toughness more than anything—didn’t exactly love the way Dwight Howard’s trade demand situation went down, and so he spoke his mind about the matter in an ESPN radio interview: “A lot of guys cry in this league these days. I try not to get caught up in that. The management in Orlando let him get away with it. Most times, they put kids in timeout. They never put him in timeout. He just kept crying and got his way. Now he’s in LA with Kobe so they got a chance to win a couple championships in the next two or three years. … They could have traded him and got something better for him last year. I think they just tried to play along. They just pleased him anyway they could but he never did anything to please them.”

hes right, but there is blood on the magic as well. The owner told him they would trade him to brooklyn if he signed that 1 year tender thing, and they broke their promise.

  • Drazen

    His way were the Nets.

  • IAMORANGE4EVER

Charles Oakley is like a wannabe Sir Charles Barkley.

  • http://pornhub.com Black Dude From NYC

the Magic & Dwight are both b_tches. cant we all agree on this.

  • ByAnyMeansNecessary

Oakley isn’t a wannabe anything. He’s been the same way since he was playing in Chicago with Michael. Says what he feels.

  • Mr. Bob Dobalina

I wish Oak was working for TNT or something. Never one to back down. Obviously. You saw him play, right? And wannabe? No. He put in his 19 years. There’s nothing wannabe about him..

  • Phil the thrill

Oak is a man. He plays and talks like one. If he were still in the league Dwight would be scared. These new NBA players are soft and weak minded. Ask all the old coaches and players. They play a non physical game anymore.

  • http://slamonline BossTerry

Co sign By anymeans and Phil.. I still find it hilarious when they play the clip of Barkley slapping his face, and quickly putting some distance between him and Oak..

  • Basketball_iQ

Barkley didn’t see oak then & he don’t see’m now. Oakley didn’t do a damn thing in this league. Gtfoh

  • ByAnyMeansNecessary

@Basketball_iQ Right. Oakley didn’t do anything. Except be a part of a pretty tough Knicks team and protect his teammates like Jordan, T-Mac and Vince Carter after hard fouls by retaliating. Who didn’t know Oakley wasn’t a guy to mess with? You must not have paid much attention to the NBA in the 90s.

hey dude you got your name wrong. It should be LowBasketball_iQ.

    @basketball iq
    You are an idiot

  • BallsDeep

Yeah. If you had ever seen Oakley you wouldn’t say such shit about him. He was a solid teammate and NEVER backed down from anyone. If I remember rightly from JWilliams book he was the second strongest in the L.
Oak would smash DH, then and now…

  • Deezy

Basketball_IQ is not an idiot. Oakley’s the perfect teammate for superstars. He protected his guys. Especially the greatest to play this game, Michael Jordan. Jordan speaks great praises of Charles Oakley. To say that he’s a nobody, and didn’t do anything in this league is completely ignorant.

Who gives a phuck? When did the Magic ever do their job? NEVER!… Don’t promise your franchise player something and then don’t even attempt to make things happen. Obviously Dwight stayed another year for a reason… I don’t think it was to create this “Dwightmare” stuff. He wanted a better supporting cast around him and they weren’t doing anything to make that happen. Like Bron, he decided to leave. I feel sorry for the Magic fans.. they deserved better.

  • lisa

Oh yeah.. This league has ALWAYS been full of cry babies. Appearantly no one cares cause they are still going to the games.

Charles oakley talking down on dwight Howard is like, Keith van horn talking shlt about lebron. I respect his opinion but deep down he green with envy. TROLL IT!

  • SeanMagicJaun

I’m sorry Deezy, Basketball_IQ might be an idiot. Just by playing in the NBA for 19 seasons, the statement “didn’t do a damn thing in the league” can be deemed idiotic.

  • Zabbah

Charles Oakley was known as Jordan’s “bodyguard” during the physical play of the 80s. Dwight would still be able to get his 22 points on him but it’ll be ugly.

  • ab40

Dwight Howard’s 22 points are always ugly. The Magic and the Cavaliers before them became laughingstocks of the league they were winning but they were paying people to kiss a player his bass. That’s not how to run a businuess no matter how high paid your employee is, if he’s working for you, you don’t go around kissing his bass.

  • Keezy

Dang I thought I read “Charles Barkley”. Oakley’s a fool.

  • J.Smith

Oakley is just bitter cause D12 has chance to get a ring and he didn’t. He’s been bitter his whole career and since his retirement. Drift away quietly and continue wiping the bird sh!t off cars…

  • http://www.newyorkshockexchange.com Shock Exchange

Oakley always keeps it 100%. Fans would benefit from more of his insight. In HS the Shock Exchange used to watch him (VA Union) bang with Jerome Kersey (Longwood) when they were in college. My HS friends and I would threaten to rush the court is Oakley ever tried to step to Kersey … Yeah right!

  • CorySP8

Oak is right, the man signed a contract and cried his way out of it thats a sissy move if i’ve ever seen one.

  • Shock Exchange

Oakley was a beast and always keeps it 100%. When the Shock Exchange was in HS, he used to watch Oakley (Va. Union) bang with Jerome Kersey (Longwood). The battles would almost turn into fisticuffs. If Oakley ever stepped to Kersey, my friends and I would threaten to rush the court … Yeah right!

D12 is a punk (and I’m being kind on that one)… I swear he pulled ORL’s card… they shoulda sat him down, made him apologize and tarded him for draft picks.. ORL let him go for basically nothing.

  • Steven Kunzer

The more I see of DW the more I can’t stand him. Now he makes a point to whine and cry on the court(1st round 2013). I’ve never seen a star in the NBA go to a major market team and have a worse record than what he had last year with the “no talent” Magic. It is also pretty bad when the team he went to was better the year before also. I used to think this guy was a beast, now it’s like he’s an athletic baby with no heart. He will never make it to the top 10 centers of all time. Tim Duncan at 37 dominated him scoring wise and mentally all series.
