John Calipari Defends John Wall from Critics

John Wall’s old college coach, John Calipari, offered a nuance take on Wall‘s development as an NBA player (and the expectations that he faces.) From CSN Philly: “For John Wall, the 2010 top pick has been often criticized in his first two seasons as a pro despite putting up solid numbers. The Kentucky product posted averages of 16.3 points, 8.0 assists and 4.5 rebounds in 2011-12 — not too shabby — but are they star-like stats that many expected? [...] ‘What’s happened is, you took a 19-year old and put the weight of the world on him, saying to him, ‘We’re expecting you to drag this team to another level.’ Well, there are no young guys [who can do that]. [Even] Anthony Davis isn’t that guy,’ Calipari said. ‘Now, if you have a good team, Anthony and John will make you better. If you remember, I had Derrick Rose. But the way the [ping pong] balls dropped, he ended up playing on a pretty good team. So, all of a sudden, he’s an All-Star in two years, and all of a sudden he becomes the MVP of the league. But he’s on a good team. So, what’ll happen is, as [the Wizards] build that team, John will come out more.’”

Couldn’t agree more. John is going to have a big year.

BIG year coming up for wall

I still find it hard to see how Irving is so much better than JW? Irving shooting but John is as good or better all around.

Wall’s supporting cast was far worse than D-Will’s yet D-Will is one of the best in the league and JWall is underperforming? Only three guys in the league had 16 ppg, 8 apg last year..

correct me if i’m wrong, but hasn’t John Calipari always been a little higher on John Wall than Derrick Rose? or seemed that way at least? I’m not surprised that he just attributed Rose’s accomplishments to the team he is on.

However you look at it, you can’t deny that Wall played with a bunch of knuckleheads. Rose plays alongside gritty-do whatever it takes to win guys. Guys like noah. Rose also has a very good coach who has his teams respect. however i am excited for wall to play this season with a more mature roster. I always saw wall as a flower trying to grow in a pile of dry dirt. While rose isnt surrounded by elite talent, his team was very deep, especially the past 2 seasons.

    EXACTLY

Good point just don’t tell DWill fans that. They all love to erase what DWill failed to do last season in terms of his individual numbers and blame it on his supporting cast

  • Junior Taylor

Those are excellent numbers given the lack of talent surrounding him. Having a player of Beal’s talent playing next to him could see a rise in Wall’s numbers across the board.

i totally agree, i am just saying i get the feeling from Calipari that he favors(ed) John Wall as a player over Derrick Rose – whether he has a good reason for it, or i’m totally wrong idk.

wait, who said John Wall was underperforming tho?

  • LeroyShonuff

I have always gotten that impression. It seems like Rose is one of his least favorite but by far his best player. It was rumors before that Rose and Cal wasn’t the best of friends simply because Rose wasn’t with the antics and publicity stunts. That’s obviously is about of Cal’s persona and not Rose. So I can see Cal favoring Wall over Rose more. There are more young men with the personality of a Wall than a Rose so Cal is smart to champion him a little more in the public eye.

Irving handles the ball better, plays more under control, and is much more efficient, that’s really why everyone views Irving as a better player. Defense is always under valued, and that is the only area Wall is considerably better in.

Walls supporting cast was not horrible, just very young and immature with low b-ball IQ. Mcgee, young, Blatche and crawford all have good talent just not the right mentality yet.

  • LakeShow

    ie, horrible.

  • Junior Taylor

You lost me when you included Blatche as a cat with good talent.

  • Slick Ric

Rose didn’t have a good coach his first two seasons though( Vinny was a rookie coach and plus he was vinny del negro), forget the last two seasons with Thibs because Wall hasn’t reached those amount of seasons yet. Vinny probably stunted D.Rose growth those first two seasons.

  • Slick Ric

All those guys b-ball IQ are very low but you cant deny they all have talent.

  • Datkid

Wall is a better passer and rebounder as well though, and he takes contact better and is at least 3 inches taller maybe 4 now. maybe it’s the carolina bias talking but Wall> Irving to me.

And My Wizards had a coach in Flip Saunders who they did not respect. A tone of talent on the Wizards but didn’t have a coach who could motivate them. I respect John Wall. He always play hard, just has to continue to work on his mid range jumper. Could potentially be an elite point guard in this league……………someday.

  • KDUB

On the low Drose made Calipari!!!!

  • Slick Ric

Truth….How many guys have went to his team because of Roses success? many….Tyreke helped too because he won ROY the next season after Rose did.

Lets face it, John doesn’t have ‘It” he’d be a great sidekick tho

  • K.J. Martin

Um, don’t think so. Wall should be better this year than the past two, but he’s not gonna be in the discussion for one of the League’s best points . . . probably ever.
