Deron Williams Partly Blames Mark Cuban for Not Signing With Mavs

by Marcel Mutoni@marcel_mutoni

According to Deron Williams, one of the biggest reasons he’s not a Dallas Maverick today, is that Mark Cuban didn’t show up for a meeting.

Cuban was busy taping his TV show “Shark Tank” in California, and sent Mavs head coach Rick Carlisle and GM Donnie Nelson to meet with the free agent superstar point guard.

This did not sit well with D-Will, who felt that his questions about the direction Dallas was taking were left largely unanswered.

Per the NY Daily News:

“Of course (Cuban’s absence had an effect),” Williams said. “My top four when I was coming out of high school was Illinois, Georgia Tech, Tennessee and Maryland. “Maryland told me they wanted me to come on a visit but Gary Williams wouldn’t be there. So I told them, ‘It’s okay. I’d rather not go.’ So that was that. It’s similar.”

“I think (Cuban) would have been able to answer a lot of the questions me and my agent have for him that really didn’t get answered that day pertaining to the future,” Williams said. “And I think if he was there he would have been able to answer those questions a little bit better. It maybe would have helped me. (I wanted to hear about) the direction of the future of the team, other than Dirk — players they were thinking about. Everything was basically just about their track record, trust their track record, which is, you know, I can honor that, because they do have a good track record, but it’s not enough for me, especially when (Nets GM) Billy (King) was updating me daily.”

After losing out in the free agent chase, Mark Cuban famously countered that the Mavericks are better off anyway without Deron Williams, which is beyond hilarious.

It’s hard to imagine that a face-to-face meeting with the Dallas Mavericks owner would have been enough to sway Deron Williams enough to walk away from everything the Brooklyn Nets were offering — $99 million over five years instead of what Dallas could offer ($75 million over four years).

Deron, this nonsense that you are spewing will only work with feeble minds. If Mark Cuban wasn’t there to answer your questions one day, you could have easily gone another day to ask him questions. Are you really trying to turn your own city against Cuban and think that this will work? Newsflash, your not 17 anymore little buddy. This guy is just tryin to save face and retain some fans in Dallas.

  • spit hot fiyah

don’t blame cuban, he probably saw jaws when he was little and couldn’t resist shark tank.

  • ByAnyMeansNecessary

Dallas wouldn’t have been the right decision regardless of who showed up from the organization to talk to him. No money left after signing him and having Dirk and Shawn Marion. Brooklyn was easily the better move. Only one team really stands in their way in the East in Miami as long as D-Rose is out in Chicago. They can play with anyone else iin the conference. Out West, there’s the Thunder, Lakers, Clippers and Spurs.

  • HotTrod

Brooklyn Nets are the Brooklyn Nets.. They will not compete with Miami..Hawks are better than the Nets

  • ByAnyMeansNecessary

How are the Hawks better than the Nets?

  • pposse

the clippers??! cmon now! the team that got swept by the team that got backdoor swept by the thunder?! the team that is relying on torn achilles 37 yr old chauncey billups to be the leader/savior?

  • ByAnyMeansNecessary

Look at their roster. There is no intelligent basketball analyst or fan who has them any worse than 4th place in the West going into the season. As for their leader, have you ever heard of Chris Paul???

Dunno wtf Cuban was thinking filming a dumb show instead of going to recruit someone like this. Being there is important, it shows commitment and serious intent. It’s not a cop out from Deron – who wouldn’t feel dissed if the person responsible for controlling your future didn’t prioritize you over shooting some ridiculous TV show?

  • Anthony Dixon

Are you an angry hawks or knicks fan??

  • pposse

yah i heard of the guy who got swept out of the playoffs by tony parker. What makes you think that clips stand in the nets way out west? thats the original argument. Your saying the nets are a 2 seed in the east but they are worse than the clippers out west.

  • Anthony Dixon

Mark Cuban should have been there but i dnt understand why Deron would have gone their anyway . Dirk has a max of 3-4 years and i don’t think Dwight would really go to Dallas. Brooklyn matches up with other teams pretty well so i can see them being a 3rd seed in the east if everything goes well. Lopez will be the key though .

  • ByAnyMeansNecessary

Yeah, most people refer to Chris as the best point guard in basketball. What I said was if Deron had signed in Dallas, he would have had more teams in his way. In Brooklyn, only the Heat are considered a clear favorite with the other teams far behind. The Nets are in that group that are far behind. That’s the argument I made. Learn how to read.

  • pposse

so the clippers stand a chance against the thunder spurs and lakers? really? and that was proven when? Last year, oh yah thats right last year when they got swept outta the playffoffs. The clips have 0 shot at a title.

  • Max

    Don’t forget bout the C’s.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

LOL!!! Deron Williams is just straight up lying. The reason he signed in Brooklyn Starts with Joe, ends with Johnson.

  • danpowers

nah man. he signed the deal when he was partying with prokhorov in turkey. i bet roofies were involved

  • Dutch Rich

Surely you know what it’s like to play with a groin injury.

  • Anthony Dixon

jason kidd and felton are going to look like they were drugged when trying to guard deron.

  • roscoe

it was all about the benjamins. & im not hating… come on now. good 4 dwill to get the $100M deal.

  • danpowers

    bitch please

  • slamonthis

The last time I checked the C’s took the Heat to a game 7 last season. The new look C’s are way better than last time. They’re much younger, more athletic, much deeper and much lenghtier. Last year’s Hawk are still better than the Newly assembling NETS!!!! Hell New York is far better squad than the Nets. The East is up for grabs, Heat will not repeat!!

  • ByAnyMeansNecessary

Neither one will be able to guard Deron or any other top rate point guard. There’s a reason why Kidd initially was going to go where Deron went in order to be his backup.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

    the truth hurts

  • danpowers

so what. this guy will probably have great games against almost any team out there coz he is just a great player. no need to particularly mention the knicks unless you wanna piss on someones leg

  • pposse

gawd, no i dont, im not an nba player, but i surely know that cp is always injured in some way shape or form, and smart enough to not care in my evaluation process of him. name me one year he hasnt been injured in the last 3 yrs? get over it dutchrich it is what it is, if he doesnt make that excuse for himself, then why are u??

  • danpowers

why should knicks fans be angry about the nets anyway? many of us will root for the nets in any game they are not playing us.

  • ByAnyMeansNecessary

Injured or healthy CP3, the playoffs are about matchups. The Clippers don’t match up well with the Spurs. They match up better with the Thunder. So to say that the Clippers aren’t that great because the Spurs swept them is a pretty weak argument to try to make.

  • danpowers

that is all true. the only thing of concern is that garnett and pierce got one year older at an age where one year can make a big difference

  • clydesays

Cuban could have made that work, IF he wanted to. Where ever he was taping the show, he could have flown DWill & his agent in along with the Mavs officials & set up somewhere to meet for a couple of hours. He obviously didn’t want to commit to that contract. Cubes claiming otherwise is ridiculous.

  • pposse

the clippers are not that great period! That team is not a championship contending team..get over that. We all thought they would be real good last year, but they underachieved. I highly doubt anything different will happen this year. Last year if there was any excuse it was that chauncey didn’t play..logic tells me that a 37 yr old with an achilles issue will not make the team better this year. Getting swept in the prime of your career is huge, and what was CP averaging anyways in that series??! my argument is just fine, until you admit that you overrated the clippers and completely underrated the boston celtics in the east, i can’t stop.

  • ByAnyMeansNecessary

Last year’s Hawks are not better than this year’s Nets. Joe Johnson won’t have to or need to isolate nearly as much playing with Deron Williams. He will be more efficient. If Lopez stays healthy for once, they will be a pretty well-balanced team with more pieces than last year’s Hawks team. This is clearly a better team than last year’s Hawks. The Heat are clear favorites. The Celtics are younger, but less experienced. When it gets into crunch time, people will see that they miss Ray more than they think they will. The East is not up for grabs. There is no team right now that can beat Miami in a series. The last time I checked, almost doesn’t count. LeBron went wild and the Celtics went home early just like the Pacers, Knicks and Thunder did.

  • ByAnyMeansNecessary

You must have been asleep all summer. On paper, that team is at worst the 5th most talented team in basketball. At this point, all we can go on is what the rosters look like since no regular season games have been played yet. No one said they were going to be great last year since it was their first year together and Chauncey Billups got hurt which was a huge blow to that team. People said they would be a playoff team and they were. Expectations were met. As for using Billups’ injury as an excuse, that’s a pretty good excuse. He will make the team better and you’re out of your mind if you think otherwise. Getting swept because you’re playing against a team you don’t match up with well is nothing to be ashamed of. Your argument is weak. Deal with it. The Clippers are not overrated. They have one of the best rosters right now. The Celtics are no match for the Heat. That’s just the truth. You have no idea what you’re talking about.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

i was talking about the Kidd following Deron thing, not the rest of it.

  • danpowers

    okidoki

  • pposse

the celtics may not match up with the heat, but they definately are not in the ‘other’ category as you would like to put it. Last year they went to game 7, and game 6 lebron had to put on a god like performance. thats on paper and on video…a 37 yr old with rehabbing a torn achilles is what your putting your faith in for this year? cmon now! he might still be a floor general, but chauncey’s days are numbered, thats a debilitating injury especially at the age he is at. its not even the fact they got swept, look at cp’s numbers, that team is just not a threat to the real contenders even tho u like to think they are.

  • ByAnyMeansNecessary

They are in the other category. No one is saying that the Celtics can challenge Miami because they can’t. Miami has an easy road to the Finals. Like I said, a lot of teams almost won, but they all went home just like Boston did. There are only winners and losers. Boston lost. The Clippers have a lot of faith in Chauncey not because they expect him to carry them, but because he can spell Chris or play with Chris. Meaning they will have 2 guys who can pick apart a defense together on the floor at the same time. That Spurs series would have been different if Chauncey had played and they would have gotten by Memphis easier if he had played. You’re pretty much alone in thinking that the Clippers aren’t a threat in the Western Conference.
