Dwight Howard Blames Orlando Drama for Not Winning DPOY Award

by Marcel Mutoni / @marcel_mutoni

In the annual survey of the NBA’s general managers, Dwight Howard was voted as the League’s top defensive player. The Lakers’ big man certainly agrees with the GMs, and says he should have won the Defensive Player of the Year award last season.

The honor went instead to New York Knicks center Tyson Chandler. According to Howard — a three-time winner of the DPOY award — this was largely due to the exhausting Dwightmare that took place all season long in Orlando.

From the LA Daily News and ESPN:

The NBA’s annual general manager preseason survey touted Howard as the league’s best defensive player (60 percent overall) and best interior defender (66.7 percent). But the three-time Defensive Player of the Year sounded more miffed that the league handed the award last season to New York’s “I felt like I did my job to win. I also feel like I didn’t because of my whole situation,” Howard said, referring to his possible departure from Orlando.

“I was a little bit upset about that.” [...] Howard said he is looking forward to adding his defensive ingredients to the new group of players assembled in L.A. “I’m happy now,” Howard said. “This year I get an opportunity to lead these guys on the defensive end and make those guys better defenders and also make them have more confidence in the team defense.”

Howard finished third in voting last season, behind Chandler and Serge Ibaka. He also missed 12 of 66 games due to injury, which was likely the biggest factor in him not winning the award.

With the off-the-court drama behind him now, Dwight has a chance to chase his fourth DPOY trophy, which would tie him with Ben Wallace and Dikembe Mutombo for the most ever.

    please stop.

  • Zabbah

Probably true bu I blame him for the drama itself, the big baby.

  • Max

    It is true..

The league picked the Good Guy… D12 had too much drama and baggage with him last season to be highlighted for an individual award.

if anything.. Tyson Played with more heart then dwight last year. boo boo ass n*gga

  • Perry the PlatyPteranodon

If anything, I’m more surprised 40% of GM’s don’t think Dwight’s the best defender in the league….

  • swish

LeBron James shoulda been the DPOY last season…..

  • Dagger

Howard was not quite himself defensively last year, while Chandler was integral to New York becoming a good defensive team while starting two of the worst defensive stars in the league. Chandler deserved it. And so, for that matter, did Lebron. Howard is the league’s best defensive player, but it’s not by such a huge margin that he’s a shoo-in every year.

    couldn’t said it better myself

  • Lloyd

“The reason I wasn’t DPOY was because of the Dwightmare last year which I…uh…which I created so I guess…uh…it’s basically my fault that I wasn’t DPOY. Great question!”

    dude needs to stop.

  • spit hot fiyah

pot to kettle: you r black

Dwight sure likes to play the blame game…

  • roscoe

Who the h*ll cares who got the DPOY?! Not this guy.

  • Rainman

LeBron Fanboys nowadays… He was in the discussion (rightfully so) but theres a reason he wasnt even in the top 3 in voting…

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

    because Serge Ibaka was overrated?

  • JML-G

i blame Tyson Chandler being better on d last year for Dwight not winning that award

  • Caboose

It’s never your fault is it Dwight?

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

apparently not, even when he is blaming something that is completely and utterly his fault in the first place.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

except Dwight was, in every measurable way, a better defender.

  • Drig

THIS. One like doesn’t help stress this enough.

  • RowdyTexan

Sounds an awful lot like one of his teammates

  • Perry the PlatyPteranodon

Sadly, Lebron doesn’t get enough credit for his defence, I had either Dwight or Lebron as DPOY, with Dwight getting the edge… clearly the people voting for the award thought otherwise.

  • LakeShow

    Andre Iguadala was better tho…

  • Conor

He absolutely should not have been.

  • Redd

    Because you didn’t get injured..right?

  • Junior Taylor

The day Howard owns up to anything will be the first.

  • bike

It was Van Gundy Dwight. He did everything humanly possible to make sure you didn’t get it. He says mean things about you behind your back. He has a little Dwight doll that he sticks pins in and yells at.

  • Perry the PlatyPteranodon

The first five words of that were so misleading, I thought about down voting. But after reading the rest…. I must stop and give praise to your absolute brilliance. You sir, are nothing short of a master of your craft. Truly, a once in a website talent.

  • Pops

Honestly Chandler deserved it, he basically single-handily transformed the Knicks into a respectable defensive team.

  • Chukaz

He’s right. Its not like he dropped off as a defender. He was as good as ever, and he was the best. That’s why he was named all-defensive 1st team by the coaches. The media votes for DPOY and we know they care about dumb stories more than basketball. Rose was MVP over Howard and LeBron because it was a great story, not because he was the best.

  • Spetsnaz

I still don’t understand how Chandler was DPOY but could only get 2nd team all defensive.

  • aicomeback

so do you think lebron shoulda been dpoy?

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

No, was just posting the actual reason he didn’t finish top 3 in the voting

  • Vince

Ibaka should have got it imo, dude averaged 3.6 blocks a game, if thats not defense I’m not sure what is.

  • Mr. Wet

I think he was easily top 3. I’d say a lot had to do with guys not wanting to vote for him for mvp and dpoy as well. I’m actually quite okay with Chandler getting it.

  • Mr. Wet

this was puzzling to me as well.

  • Mr. Wet

blocks are great, they have a huge impact on the game. Just the threat of them. But it’s not everything. Just like Paul averages a boat load of steals, doesn’t mean they are lock down defenders. Granted a shot blocked influences the game more. It’s not everything.

  • Yi-Cheng Chen

i guess there are not enough candidates.

  • Yi-Cheng Chen

  • Teddy-the-Bear

Yet he still made All-Defensive First Team over the actual DPOY… makes perfect sense.

  • http://www.facebook.com/chris.callihan1 Chris Callihan

Tony allen best defender in the league, has been for a few years. Blocked shots and steals don’t mean everything. He just locks down

  • thetruthhurts

the numbers were relatively the same from last season to the season before that. he lost it the same reason mj never won the mvp each year he was in the l. voters base everything on improvement from the year before, importance to the team, stats etc. with that said, he missed a whole bunch of games and there wasnt that much of a drop defensively.

  • thetruthhurts

the only logical explanation is ballots were already in, stern comes and sees how much of a baby dwight is, puts all ten names inside a hat and picks the dpoy. see, logical right.

  • pposse

give me rose any day over howard. plus rose was the best player on the best team (regular season), thats what the MVP is all about and has been like that for the most part

  • errday

Just to be clear, you’re calling Dwight a Big Baby and not blaming the Dwightmare on Big Baby.
