Ray Allen Says Beef With Rajon Rondo Began in 2009

Ray Allen’s departure from Boston and landing in Miami continues to be sore subject for Ray and his former teammates. Rajon Rondo – one of the keys to Allen deciding to bolt as a free agent – claims that their acrimonious relationship was overblown. And according to Allen, the whole things started three years ago. Ray also talks in detail about why he no longer felt like he fit in with the Celtics’ plans. Per the Miami Herald: “I was very loyal to the city and I love the city, but when it came time to keep me in a uniform [the Celtics] did everything they could to seem like … to not want me to come back,’ Allen said. Yes, the Celtics offered Allen plenty of money to stay, but Allen viewed it as a hollow gesture. Boston signed Jason Terry in early July, ensuring that Allen would receive fewer minutes. He already had been benched for Avery Bradley. For Allen, who had helped restore Boston as an Eastern Conference power, it was too much. Allen is adamant that coming off bench for the Celtics ultimately had nothing to do with his decision to leave. After all, he’s currently coming off the bench for Heat, too. It was more about respect. In the end, Allen didn’t feel appreciated in Boston. In his final two seasons there, he was made to feel old. ‘In Boston, they were telling me they were going to bring me off the bench — ‘We’re going to play you less minutes’ — and all I asked was, ‘How are you going to use me because the last two years you’ve been using me as decoys,’ Allen said. ‘You’re running all these plays for me just to pass it to somewhere else and you’re not putting me into any scoring opportunities and I’m just standing over in the corner the majority of games.’ […] He said the friction with Rondo began in 2009 when Rivers and Celtics president Danny Ainge proposed a trade that would have sent Allen and Rondo to Phoenix for Amare Stoudemire, Leandro Barbosa and the 14th overall pick in the 2010 draft. Allen said that, at the time, Ainge and Rivers ‘didn’t get along’ with Rondo. ‘So, I called him and I told him, ‘hey they’re supposedly trading us to Phoenix because you and Danny and Doc don’t get along,’ Allen said. ‘So, whatever you can do.’ … ‘So, for some reason, I guess he thought that I was … that I had something against him, or there were some issues. And I had no issues with him. I won with him.’ Now, Allen says if Rondo ‘had issue with me, that’s on him … ‘I have a way of going about doing my job that, I want everyone to come and play their hardest and come in and do their job and I can’t, I don’t worry myself with things I can’t control,’ Allen said.”

Being on a drama queen team is turning him in to one too.

  • spit hot fiyah

really good for boston that that trade never materialized, that would have been an epic failure

  • Lloyd

Ray has been one of my favourite players from his demeanor on the court to his conduct off of it for a long time, but this isn’t the Ray I’m a fan of. This drama will blow over if Ray keeps his mouth shut, as he should, but right now he seems like a petty and bitter ex-girlfriend. The media tries to bring out this dramatic side of the players, but I used to think Ray was above it.

  • tigerJK

lol that’s just lame man.. let it go.. win another championship.. life goes on….

I really dont even know why Ray is still speaking about this… I hope they are releasing bits and pieces of 1 interview because it doesn’t seem like Ray Allen to keep re-visiting this. Guess it makes for better opening night drama!

  • SuperAr82

    I don’t care..

  • SuperAr82

Yes! btw Patrick Patterson was that 14th pick..

  • Perry the PlatyPteranodon

I always considered things of this nature to be considered, as the great Kanye West so eloquently said, “family business”

  • KipSmithers

Patterson can hit the three, plus he would’ve been another guy who could keep up with Rondo.

  • roscoe

    opening night should be fun.

  • rainman10

Patterson has yet to hit a three in his two NBA seasons

  • ByAnyMeansNecessary

It would be great if the media stops asking Ray about Boston now that he’s in Miami and the regular season is about to start. And if no one asked him and he decided to share this information on his own, it wasn’t the best idea. Especially since it’s Miami vs. Boston on opening night in a week and the Celtics have to be there while Miami raises the banner and collects their rings, rings that they got after LeBron sent Boston home almost by himself in Games 6 and 7. Rondo hasn’t said much and I applaud him for it. KG has just said that he doesn’t talk to Ray anymore. I haven’t heard a word from Pierce. Time for Ray to just play ball now.

  • anon

why is everyone giving ray such hate for this? can you blame the guy? he has as much pride as anyone and he felt slighted by his role on the team, his relationship with management, and his relationship with his coach and point guard. he feels he is still good enough to be utilized more effectively, and miami appealed to his pride. he may shoot like a robot, but he is as human as everyone else. give ray a break.

  • KipSmithers

He doesn’t have to. Just saying he’s been known to. I’m sure he’ll do more when/if the team needs it.

  • bike

Slowly, ever so slowly, the more I hear this kind of sh*t, the less respect I have for Ray.

  • underdog

Man, I like the dude, but he really should shut up about Boston and just keep looking in the right direction.

  • Caboose

You ever know that guy who breaks up with a girl because she didn’t treat him great but was ridiculously hot and then that guy does nothing but call attention to her faults so that he doesn’t have to think about losing her? Yeah, that’s Ray.

Bynum has also been known to hit threes, albeit ill-advised.

Ray Allen is a fuccin liar. Please, this shyt doens’t have to do with Rondo or the trade. He was just scared that a younger player, Avery Bradley was gonna be more PRODUCTIVE (not a better shooter) than his ass. I ain’t buying this shyt, now if he wants to go cry about his “woes” in Boston to Miami, then he should go ahead. But the thing is you can never run away from the truth, his ass will still be as less productive as he was in Boston, changing teams ain’t gonna change that. Plus, watch Rondo stomp on that ass come opening night.

  • Anonymous

Exactly, he’s a b*tch. See the problem is not about how he feelt that they didn’t appreciate him. The problem is with him, maybe if he worked harder and put in more effort and believed in his own damn self, he wouldn’t have felt underappreciated. But he’s a b*tch he didn’t believe in himself and that’s why his scared ass RAN to miami. Plus, KG and Rondo all could have said much more, heck I saw the interview where KG said he lost Ray’s number and I bet he really wanted to just slam him but he didn’t. Ray might go to the championship team (only as of now) but he comes out of this as the loser.

Hasn’t he always been a queen?

I’m even Suprised that Ray is even talking letting it all be known

  • Rainman

He needs to stop talking, he’s even more annoying and disliked than when he first jetted. Shut up, Ray

  • Rainman

I can blame him for not shutting the hell up and contuing to flame the fire, yes, yes i can.

  • Rainman

    well put lol

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

you can’t be known to do something you’ve never done.

  • LakeShow

Probably not. Their team is better this year…

  • KipSmithers

I hope Bynum gets a better head on his shoulders.

  • The Seed

Ray made a punk move, now he acting like he has a reason. He is coming off of the bench in Miami, like he would in Boston. Ray Ray feelings is hurt, who cares. Seattle Sonic, Milwaukee Buck fans are upset over your poor play and unclutchabliity during those years. Ray needs to man up.

  • Caboose

I just have an image of you as half Waylon Smithers from the Simpsons and half Kip from Napoleon Dynamite. Not a good look.

  • http://www.facebook.com/qcollingwood Interdico Scriptor

Ray Ray looks like a bit of a whinge!!!

  • redoct31

Put it the form of a 4th qtr “told you so” Ray, that’s all that matters.

  • Shifty

I’m going to say it now. Rondo gets a triple double opening night. Ray was my fav as a C’s fan but as everyone is saying as of late I don’t even watch interview videos of him. I can’t stand him in that uniform and all this bad mouthing the team ecspecially rondo is just fueling a fire which I hope the C’s use to let Miami know that team which gave the hardest fight in the playoff’s is still right up there. I think people forget Lebron James had to have pretty much two career games to get the heat to the finals. Yeah sure bosh played well and Dwayne wade was here and there but people seem to down the C’s when they were at one stage having all the commentators saying Boston had it.

  • KipSmithers

LOL!!! It’s an alias that Will Smith once used on Fresh Prince.

  • Odd With No Future

Whoaaaaaa…. Yo everything ray Allen jus said is the samething that Dymez guy jus said in the other ray Allen article… That dudes a profit!!!

  • EP

Shifty is right on with his last sentence. I hate how people talk like Miami is this great dominant team that nobody can hang with. They were down 3-2 in the conference finals when the Celtics took game 5 in Miami. The Heat are great. But let’s stop talking like they’re unbeatable. A slow 4th quater in game 7 and they would have been in south beach watching the Cs in the finals.

  • kobeisapunkass

If Avery Bradley has half the career that ray Allen has had then that would be a success cant compare a dude that’s about to hit his prime against someone on their way out. Cmon man

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100003246310246 Jason Carter

Ray needs to just shut up, No one in celtic land cares (I KNOW I DONT) be the professional that you portrayed yourself to be in your whole career, keep it real, you left because your chance of winning a Ring is better in MIA, dont blame my man Rondo, and try to make him seem like a punk to the world.

  • Tommy Point

    Ray, Please shut up.

KG, Rondo & Pierce haven’t mentioned you since media day. Let it go.

  • BuenoWayno1

i still don’t get where all this Ray Allen hate is coming from, he’s just telling it like it is…anybody could have seen the writing on the wall.

  • Cameron

Well I wasn’t planning on wearing his Celtics jersey ever again but now I’m just gonna let it collect dust. Not a fan of you Ray at all anymore.

  • deerpenis

    wtf happened?

  • ClydeSays

I loved what Ray did in Green and I’d like to believe he get past all of this.

I think he’ll find that his role & minutes in Miami are going to be the same or less than they were in Boston unless LBJ starts at PF, Wade plays SF & Ray at the 2. Can’t see them doing that alot though. That gives you the defense of Ray & Chalmers. Any decent backcourt is going to eat that up.

  • Irishway’s

What happen to Jesus Shutlsworth? Would been better off sign with the Bulls Allen and Rip would made a nice seasond due.

Leave a message…Because Bosh was injured.
What happened when he came back???

  • ButtaButta

Ray Ray bussed the C’s ass on opening night! Haha

  • ButtaButta

Chalmers is one of the best defensive point guards in the league.
And they could put wade or bron at the point guard.

  • ButtaButta

    Better than who?

  • LakeShow

11 days ago man. Where ya been.

  • The seed sounds dumb

poor play as a Sonic and a Buck? Are you stupid?

  • http://www.facebook.com/qcollingwood Interdico Scriptor

Best thing you’ve said all year!

  • ernieD

According to his own words, it sounds like Ray called Rondo to tell him to get along better with Ainge and Doc… so that Ray wouldn’t have to move to Phoenix in a trade. Personally I am glad they did not make that trade, since they already have Barbosa, and Amare is a ticking time bomb physically. It also seems like Ray knew his minutes were going down even more with Terry coming aboard. Ray did a lot of whining towards the end. He wasn’t part of the puzzle so much. He was also beat up, and lost a step on his game. He made the right decision to go to Miami. I don’t feel angry at him at all.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Ben-Smith/100004127531754 Ben Smith

Sorry, dude, but Ray Allen’s problem was certainly not a failure to work hard.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Ben-Smith/100004127531754 Ben Smith

That trade would have been a disaster. Stoudemire doesn’t pass much or play much defense, and Barbosa is not a point guard.

  • Cheyrllmiller

Forget all of you. Ray is a legend. All of you are probably bitter Boston fans who are ticked because you’r reign is coming to an end. Oh wait it’s been over. Shoot, the only reason I find Boston semi watchable is because of paul. After he leaves, the heck with this franchise.

  • Brando

He has yet to hit a three in the NBA and didn’t hit a 3 until his junior year of college…And even then it was only like 1 or 2. He can’t hit the 3 consecutively… Don’t get me wrong, I’m a huge fan of Paterson but he is a slow post scorer not a perimeter scorer.

  • Bobby Slaughter

Don’t lie Allen you just wanted to go play with the SHOW in Miami. If the Ref’s called the game it should be called then a couple of the Heat players would have foul trouble every game.

  • Jorge Deneira

Rajon Rondo is a great point guard, but a man with a caustic personality.

  • MiamigoHARD

well then we come back to now

  • Gatorboy40

It was not because the chances of winning was better, it was because they tried to trade him several of times. How would you, or anyone else feel about going back to work, for someone that tried to trade you, that’s the respect issue he speaks on. By the way, Doc called Ray a traitor, and not loyal. Well guess what, Doc has left now, so is Doc a traito, and not loyal. Ray did finish his contract., Doc did not, and is a complete hypocrite.

  • hill

yeah well done ray, one question though y miami i think ur a ring chaser n would care what bench ur on as long as theres a ring !

  • Kel

Everybody gets put on the trading block. He shouldn’t take it personally, that’s business. Rondo’s been on the trading block supposedly, many times. He’s still fiercely loyal to Boston. It makes him want to work harder and prove his worth. I used to really like Ray, but lost a little respect when he bolted to the conference rivals after that playoff series. It must have been a slap in the face to Pierce and KG. I can understand logically why he did it, but personally, it would leave a bad taste in my mouth to think about leaving for Miami as a Celtic.
