Phil Jackson Doesn’t Like How the Lakers Handled Negotiations

by Marcel Mutoni@marcel_mutoni

Now that the shock of Mike D’Antoni’s hiring has begun to wear off, Los Angeles Lakers players appear ready to move on. Many of them voiced support and excitement for the decision, and settled back into their regular routines (for Kobe Bryant, this apparently means giving injured teammates a ride on his chopper.)

For Phil Jackson, though, things are not that simple. He (and those in his camp) feels that he got a raw deal from his former employer, and opened up about his gripe to the media.

Reports the LA Times:

Jackson said he vacillated over the question all weekend after meeting Saturday with team vice president Jim Buss and General Manager Mitch Kupchak, who went to his home. He hadn’t solicited the visit, but he welcomed them. He was interested in talking about a third run with a team he’d coached from 1999 to 2004 and again from 2005 to 2011. The meeting lasted about 1 1/2 hours. Jackson told them he thought he could do the job. The chat concluded with a handshake and Jackson had the impression he had until Monday to come back to them with his decision. He never got the chance.

The Lakers woke up Jackson with a phone call near midnight Sunday to tell him that Mike D’Antoni would be their coach. “I wish it would have been a little bit cleaner,” Jackson said. “It would have been much more circumspect and respectful of everybody that’s involved. It seemed slimy to be awoken with this kind of news. It’s just weird.”

Jackson goes on to deny media reports that he wanted the moon from the Lakers as part of his negotiations. When he was told by the Laker front-office that they thought Mike D’Antoni was the better fit, Jackson responded in classic fashion: “I don’t. But OK.”

For what it’s worth, Phil Jackson says he doesn’t plan to coach any other NBA team. The Lakers were his only option.

    Translation: F*ck Jim Buss.

  • elmaar

something tells me Jimmy boy is one indecisive chump

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

this sure is weird. but i am still assuming Jackson asked for a space station if he didn’t ask for the moon.

  • Jake

He’s never going to be his father, thats the problem. Jim Buss is like Chris Farley in Tommy Boy and Mitch Kupchak is David Spade.

    let’s move on

  • FLIGHT 9

Hope show-time is back with them averaging 110 ppg….. then a first round exit…

This whole debacle involving Jim Buss is why Edward Longshanks refused to send his son to negotiate with William Wallace and the Scots – the sight of Longshanks’ weak son would have only ecouraged the Scots. The Lakers have been exposed for what they are – weak and incompetent; it has only served to embolden the competition. Now teams like Portland, Utah, and Denver will be coming for their necks.

    That’s a good one!

  • danpowers

he shouldnt be too disappointed. with this team you can only lose as a coach. everybody in la will expect nothing less than a title and if this team doesnt bring a ring (which it wont) the coach would be the scapegoat no1 (which d-less antoni will be).

  • justin05

Exactly. He wanted certain away games off and a small portion of the franchise. Too high of a price when D’Antoni genuinely wants the job and fits our roster.

Phil was a great coach but he should stay retired and quiet. Despite his genius, he has always had this weird propensity to contradict himself and appear indecisive at times. He walked away from LA making it clear he was never happy with the front office, wanted to finally hang it up, and now he wants to come back and coach this ultra-loaded roster? And make no mistake, he wanted full control of everything.

That’s fine, and understandable if he didnt get the job due to his demands. I think PJ is more peeved that they told him he has until Monday to make a decision, and proceeded to call him on Sunday (or Saturday?) at midnight and tell him they hired someone else. Its not professional and a coach that delivered 5 championships to your franchise in 11 years deserves more respect than that.

As per Roland Lazenby, they (as in, Jim Buss) pretty much wanted to stick it to PJ, whom he has always loathed. If you recall, it was Jim Buss’s idea to not hire Brian Shaw, and essentially fire everyone on the Lakers who had any ties to PJ or his offense.

Stay quiet? The lakers came to the Kernal not the other way around, and they went to his place to see him, and told him its his job if he wants it, and would have until end of business day on Monday to decide.
Hence his agent flying out on Sunday to begin negotiations, all that talk about a stake in the team not going to road games etc etc never happened and was confirmed on both sides as just cannon fodder rumors and speculation. Bottom line is Mitch is a smart dude Dr. Buss is a smart dude and i’m sure they were pushing for PJ, but lil Jimmy wants to flex a lil to show everyone he can run the show, and doesn’t want any part of PJ or his diciples to get any credit for future titles hence he never had Brian Shaw in mind and hired Mike Brown who was the wrong coach for this team to begin with. He hired Rudy T phailed Mike Brown phailed Dantoni? who knows
The kernal wanted enough control to not have to deal with Jimmy’s b.s. and I cant blame him, its like working for someone who knows half of what you do and still trying to tell you what to do..
This chapter is closed, lets move on and see what Dantoni can do with this team, it should be interesting

I hate it if they really did Phil like that, but Mike is going to do a great job. I’m excited to see what these guys can do in his offense.

    Key word: “Thinking”

  • shockexchange

Before you can achieve anything, you must first visualize it.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

i am aware that Jim Buss doesn’t like Phil Jackson and vice versa (who would like a guy 16 years older than your sister, who is actively having a relationship with her). But i highly doubt this was an act from a vendetta. There is more to the story that we aren’t hearing about.

  • LakeShow

But if that achievement is truly unachievable, visualization means nothing.

None of Portland, Utah, or Denver think they can win the Western Conference. But you saying that really illustrates how firm your grasp on reality is.

  • shockexchange

The credit goes to the man in the arena … at a minimium, his “visualization” means he will “never be with those cold and timid souls who know neither victory or defeat.”

  • shockexchange

And you wonder why Stephen A. told you to get off Slam.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

LOL i don’t wonder why some person told me to get off Slam. But you believe it was actually Stephen A. Smith? Your reality, must be the best reality.

  • Redd

Maybe I can hope that Phil hates the Lakers brass & is willing to come back to Chicago to join management alongside Pip(who is already creeping into management) and Paxson.

    One can dream..

i hope laker fans scream ‘we want phil’ at tonights game vs the spurs

  • LakeShow

Co-Sign. Possible dick move, but D’Antoni is nice haha.

  • robb

Another proof of Fredo Corleone’s stupidity.

  • robb

  • bike

When Phil left, the LA front office purged the franchise of anything related to PJ and the triangle offense. Phil knew who he was dealing with and most likely made some demands that were a longshot. You have to wonder if Phil really wanted the job more than he wanted one-upsmanship on Buss and Co.

  • LakeShow

    OMG, this dude is incredible.

  • Max

Can someone link me the intervieuw of SLAM with the god of basketball “the shockexchange”?

  • thenatural

Jim Buss could sell a ketchup popsicle to a lady in white gloves… the ketchup popsicle being Mike D’Antoni

  • LakeShow

    No. No one can.

  • shutup

The Lakers had a better chance with Phil Jackson and now with the direction they chose I think their chance for a chip severely took a hit.

  • shockexchange
  • Max

    It has been done.

  • Max

    Thank you master.

  • danpowers

i like how the 2010′s lakers slowly turn into the 2000′s knicks lol

  • roscoe

rumor has it he has his eyes on the clippers to shine LAL.

  • roscoe

pjax is a big boy & his agent’s media pump/hype has a lot to do w/ the egg on his face. history shows LAL said c-ya to riles & turned out okay… now LAL said c-ya to pjax & time will tell.

  • roscoe

there aren’t any ADA laws that require LAL to hire AARP card holders, are there?

  • The Seed

Phil is a ten times better coach than Dntoni. to act like the personnel needed Mike is hogwash.

  • Redd

Really now? Ouch, if he did that..ouch.

  • Bored

Thanks, I have wanted to see this for a long time.

  • Bored

yeah f*ck Jim Buss for ruining something that could have been so entertaining.

  • L Dribble

Must be awkward when he’s dating Buss’s sister.

  • Nupe

That’s why no one pays you to analyze. Follow your name.
