Phil Jackson Reportedly Wanted to Own a Piece of the Lakers Franchise

As Laker fans continue to digest the news that their beloved former coach Phil Jackson won’t be coming back, there are rumblings out of LA that the Zen Master wanted more than just to rule the sidelines. The LA Times reports that Phil – who was stunned that the job went to Mike D’Antoni — also was looking to become a minority owner of the franchise: “Turns out, not only did Jim Buss not have a deal in place with [Phil] Jackson when he fired [Mike] Brown — an inconceivable truth — but he also wasn’t prepared to make a deal. Buss apparently walked away from Jackson partially because the coach asked for an ownership piece of the team. Magic Johnson wins five championship rings and gets a piece of the Lakers, but Jackson’s five championship rings gets him the door? This couldn’t be because Jim Buss never really liked Jackson, could it?”

Why would he come back unless they made him an offer he couldn’t refuse, like a piece of the Lakers? The guy has had multiple surgeries, back issues & is 67 years old…

Jim Buss, biggest coward in all of sports, doesn’t even qualify to hold the position he has, who’s he to turn down the greatest coach of all time? Needs to be fired immediately, he single handled destroying this storied franchise.

Yup. Arrogant, ignorant, selfish and self-absorbed.

lmao. I can only imagine how loud Buss said, “F*CK THAT!” before he hung up the phone and called D’Antoni after hearing Phil’s request

No harm no foul. Phil can live his life in peace w/ his family and the Lakers can continue their championship run w/ Mike D’Antoni as the head coach. Mike wanted the job more and regardless of hidden motives, D’Antoni is the guy for the job. He’ll have more control than Mike ever thought about demanding and he’s 6 million/yr cheaper. No chunck of the franchise and no away games off. This is the NBA

2 make judgements about anyone using assumptions based on unknown information is an error. 4 those of u who are a little slow. . . u & i have no idea what went down behind closed doors. no clue… we never do.

I’m sure most of these “demands” are lies. They are making up those stories so nobody criticizes their decision to hire D’antoni. I’m sure there are other reasons for this decision, and I don’t think they are money or basketball related.

  • Ugh

Honestly, isn’t Jim Buss acting just like Dolan? Get your GM to make a great team, then f^$k the whole thing up by hiring the wrong coach because the right one hates your guts. Just like Walsh assembling a great team and then Dolan forcing the trade for Melo. I don’t want to speak out of turn, but is it coincidence they’re both spoiled sons of extremely wealthy fathers?
