Michael Kidd-Gilchrist Was ‘Scared To Death’ He Wasn’t Good Enough For NBA

MKG told Coach Cal during the preseason that he wasn’t sure if he was good enough for the NBA and doubted whether he should have gone pro. With a pep talk from Cal, the League’s youngest player kept working and has a successful season so far, being named Eastern Conference Rookie of the Month. From the Charlotte Observer: “Apparently Charlotte Bobcats rookie Michael Kidd-Gilchrist had a crisis of confidence in the preseason, but his college coach quickly put out that fire. Kentucky coach John Calipari, speaking with local media in Lexington, revealed Friday that Kidd-Gilchrist sent him text messages that ‘I may have made a mistake’ turning pro, and ‘I don’t think I’m good enough.’ ‘He was scared to death,’ Calipari recalled. Calipari brought this up to illustrate how much he valued Kidd-Gilchrist’s competitiveness, resilience and energy. He reminded Kidd-Gilchrist of that in a series of texts. Calipari said he told his former star, ‘What? Are you kidding me? You may not shoot it as well. You may not bounce it as well. But the thing you do, no one else does. So you keep playing hard and competing. That’s what you do.’ Asked about all this before Friday’s Bobcats-Milwaukee Bucks game, Bobcats coach Mike Dunlap said most great athletes are motivated by a fear of failure. ‘So he comes in early every day and puts up extra shots and watches film. He’s great in the locker room, and that’s not something’ the public sees, Dunlap said.”

MKG isn’t the most talented player and will never put up flashy numbers, but I would love to have him on my team. He’s got that “it” factor and a championship mentality. And, he’s the youngest player in the League? Your future is bright young man, no worries.

I really hope he becomes a player like Scottie Pippen. I also hope that the Bobcats continue to lose those close games so they can get another nice draft pick

He is a guy that not most teams have, but absolutely need. A selfless glue guy that can also help score and defend. A guy like him helps make good teams better and great teams a championship team. An intangible. He’s already helping them legitimate and definitely more competitive. Scottie Pippen is great glue guy. I’d love mKg on Lakers. Artest is very good glue guy but isn’t athletic anymore

    All hail MKG!

MKG is the MAN! He’s EXACTLY the type of player that the Bobcats needed. He brings competitiveness and team spirit and with that this team is already better than it was last year! 10 ppg on 49% shooting…6 rpg…while averaging 27 mpg. Those seem like pretty solid stats for a foundation to me!

Mike will get better and better and better. He was one of the most dominant players in college ball AND the youngest player in college ball. He is proving to be one of the better rookies, putting up 25/12 a few times already as the youngest player in the NBA. The jumper will improve as will his handle. He is a terror in the open court, a tough defender, one of the better shot blockers at his height, in the entire league and he will be an all-star, mark it down. Too much fire, people will see this as he gets better, his confidence improves and his game rounds out. Has been outworking everybody and improving since he as 14 years old, and he will continue to do it. He is a baby and already putting up single game numbers that many players rarely reach, wait until he actually gains some experience!
