Andrew Bynum No Longer Sure When He Will Play Again

by Marcel Mutoni @ marcel_mutoni

Not too long ago, there was optimism about Andrew Bynum suiting up shortly following the NBA All-Star break. That has been replaced with growing uncertainty.

The Philadelphia Sixers’ center recently felt pain in his surgically-repaired left knee, and Bynum now sounds pessimistic about the possibility that he will make his season debut this month. Gulp.

Per the Philly Daily News:

“I started to do basketball work,” he said. “I think I worked out for 2 days on the court and then I had a lot of pain so we backed down a little bit (Monday). Probably get on the Alter G (anti gravity machine) tomorrow (Tuesday) and we’ll just progress as much as we can. I’m not sure (about debuting this month), it’s all going to depend on if we get a setback or not. Right now things are going well, I’m losing weight and I’m staying on the court as long as I can, so that’s good.”

“I’m not very optimistic,” Bynum admitted. “When I get on the court, that’s when I want to be ready. I’m trying as hard as I can. It would suck to play through pain but sometimes you have to. Not actually (going through) contact. I went through some drills with teammates and stuff but no contact.” Asked if this pain is worse than any he’s played through before, Bynum said: “Definitely, I think it’s just not ready yet.”

The only positive news out of Andrew Bynum’s mouth is that his weight is down to roughly 305 pounds (his goal is to get it down to between 285-295).

The shedding of pounds likely offers little-to-no comfort to increasingly worried and frustrated Sixers fans.

I’m more concerned with what he’s going to do with that awful fro. He looks like he’s wearing a Halloween costume in that picture.

  • Happy

Sorry, I couldn’t get past the pic of him to read the article.

imagine if blake Griffin dunked while taking off from the anti gravity machine, he might end up on the moon

Tony DiLeo just needs to come out & say he’s done for the season. Just be honest with Bynum, yourself (management) & the fan base. Bring him back on a reduced salary next season & use the cap space to make upgrades to the 2-Spot. #GoSixers

  • RayJr

yeah but so far not by a huge margin

  • RayJr

I think the question is what is he going to do with that hair? THAT is what us commenters are most concerned about. Just keep posting weekly pics of it with no story and we will be fine.

  • Nigel

As much as I hate to say this, I’m seeing a Brandon Roy 2.0 scenario down the line. Even if Bynum does get healthy enough to go hard a couple more years, how is he going to be holding up at 30? 35?

  • ThaRealSwagDikk

Bynum got cody barnes knees. Smh..

  • RKJ92

At least his hair looks a little better now lol…

what has happened to the nba big man? when we pine for bynum to return, and for a dwight howard to put up a measly 20 and 10 – u know things are bad. i was looking at old center stats- dream, admiral , ewing and shaq were all 25 and 12. zo, daughtery smits sabonis were all about 18 and 10- those were the days . if dwight and bynum were playing then = they d be like the 10th and 11th best big men in the league. even now theyre overrated imo. i wouldve loved to have seen what robinson would have done to dwight- even at 50- at hakeems training camp- he moved more fluidly and more gracefully and skillfully than dwight at 25.

  • michael

this cant be all rule changes- theyre actually smaller and less skilled. its bizarre. every other position is getting bigger, faster and possibly better- every position except perhaps the 2guard and the 5. the 2 is understandable- it goes up and down- but the centre is inexplicable.

  • Ugh

I’m calling this part of the Jim Buss Curse. Everything he touches he f%^$ up.

  • playa

In other news Andrew Bynum no longer sure if he gives a f#ck or not haha, the man is priceless, though I find him much more likeable that Dwight who used to be my second favourite player…how bizarre

  • Bigbeats23

Who would you rather have going into next season? Greg Oden? or The fat and way way overpaid Andrew Bynum? Oden will get a 2million dollar contract and I bet he plays more games then bynum next season. SO glad LA got rid of his sorry ass

  • Max

    Denver won in that trade.

Iggy hasnt really been playing well for Denver either lol. I honestly dont think there WAS a winner.Ironically if u were going to pick one i may pic Orlando(who everyone thought got the short end of the deal) they got young pieces that have turned out to play very well , Vucevic comes to mind, he’s one of the top 3 or 4 rebounders in the L, and he’s so young and already a double double guy. I bet the Sixers would love him back

  • Max

Iggy’s importance will increase come playoff time. But yeah, Magic got what seemed like the worst part but it turns out it was pretty solid.

  • Truth in Fiction

Ask the new owners what they’re going to do about this. After last seasons’ success (which they had nothing to do with other than comping a ton of seats,) they gave the few season ticket holders they had left a hefty price increase, filled the visitors’ tunnel in with folding chairs, and ignored the fact that Philly is a working class town. More than a few people have suspicions that they used Bynum as a draw.

  • TO

yo real talk wtf is that on his head?

This dude needs to realise GOD is mad at him for that poor excuse of a broke a$$ soul glo wig. What the phuck you on kid? Sort it out or wel get the bounty hunter on you.

  • clydesays

As f’ed up as the Dwight/Lake Show situation is, this is worse. He might never play again & he’s committing crimes against hair. His barber is probabably gunning for him right now…

Ladies and Gentlemen I give you Greg Oden I.5 ! if you put them together you might at least half of a good knee between the two. Like I wonder if they have the same surgeon or are they related.

  • Omar

I was going to say the same thing!!!!

Its funny, you named all those great centers, and didn’t even mention the other greats from the era like Zo and Dikembe, or even Vlade. It seems all the great centers went extinct in the early 00s.
